DODGING A BULLET NAMED DENNIS
Yahoo’s Jason King has a nice, long-form story on the rise of downtrodden Kansas football program to its newfound goodness, replete with details like Mangino and assistants personally cleaning years of grubby fingerprints off the walls before recruiting visits and such. It also lets in a hint that Mangino is not very nice, and may in fact be downright mean, something we find shocking–shocking, Nigel!–in a successful head coach.
We imagine this all stems from a deep, unending unhappiness in the hardwiring of Mangino’s system. But don’t trust us–the film doesn’t lie.
But past the puffy, up-from-the-bootstraps vibe and hints of unpleasantness, there’s also a well reported flash of a frightening alternate reality and a former AD doing what ADs rarely do: speaking publicly and candidly not only about the hiring process, but about the candidates’ own behavior during the process. Kansas could have been Texas A&M ‘07 had it not been for Dennis Franchione practically oozing sleazegrease in an exchange with former Kansas AD Al Bohl.
One minute Franchione seemed ready to accept the job, the next he’d changed his mind. The end came when Franchione told Bohl he needed a little more time because he wanted to see if he was going to be a candidate for the Notre Dame job, which came open when Bob Davie was fired on Dec. 2. That same day, Bohl rescinded his offer to Franchione and hired Mangino.
Franchione had, at that point, hadn’t even finished one season with Alabama and was already throwing it around to both Notre Dame and Kansas. Kansas search committee member Ray Evans puts it better than we ever could, Hedley Lamarr comparisons be damned:
Six years later it looks like we may have dodged a bullet.
A bullet named Dennis, who could be coaching in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Dallas, Texas, or in the Canadian Football League in a few weeks, for all we know.
Bonus weirdness: The strangest post-game interview we’ve ever seen must be included with this post. The YouTube commenters seem to think Fran is “emotional” there. That is not the word we were thinking of when watching it.

Interesting.
The “Francine to Kansas” story popped up as a rumor almost immediately after it happened, IIRC complete with the add-on that she was also trying to get her foot in the door at Notre Dame. It was roundly scoffed by the kept press in Alabama at the time, of course. Nice to have a confirmation, even long after the fact.

Unless your being sarcastic, I think its the fact that Mangino isn’t a self promoting prick like Weis. Going on 60 minutes or whatever and saying that “if talent and everything is even, ND will have a decided advantage in X’s & O’s because I’m a great coach”. Oh, I didn’t know Air Force, Navy, GT, MSU, BC, and every other school had that much more of an athletic advantage over ND.

That is the equivalent of leaving Kansas for Alabama, in basketball.
Yes, I recall that ‘Bama was about to get nailed for NCAA probation, but coaching Kansas is career suicide if you don’t get out of there like Mason did after a couple of successful seasons. Of course going to Minnesota is just delaying the suicide inevitable.
Or, perhaps Franchione should be in futures and speculating on currency, since he must have known that the Big 12 North was going to fall off the world and even a school like Kansas could be competitive in 2007.

Now that, my friends, is completely absurd (although it could happen).

Ok, I don’t know if anyone is still even reading comments on this thread anymore but….
Dude who is a Florida fan who says some random bama fan is a douche: maybe, but I personally have no quarrel with UF except when we play them. Hell, I even like Meyer. I think he shows a lot of (dreaded word) class and he and his players handled the Prothro situation as good as i’ve ever seen when he went down. Spurrier used to piss me off, mostly based on recruiting ploys he used to use, but like most of the SEC fans, he’s grown on me.
The Shula-Saban thing. The Shula hire was about as good as we could get at that point with a shit storm surrounding us. The whole thing wore thin on everyone though and the situation was bad enough that we HAD to overpay(the salary of 3.5 isnt that much worse than Stoops by the way. He makes something like 3 and Tubbs is probably going to move up to at least 2.3 or so, maybe more) for someone that would excite the fanbase and recruits. It was a desperation move, but honestly, we generate more revenue than most teams(not to say we are better, just generate more revenue)…if you got it, spend it. It was a smart business move in the sense that the excitement it produced moved merchandise at an all time high. I guarantee we made more money off the Saban hire than we spent. It was kinda necessary to pull a HUGE name and we did. Greeting him at the airport and the A-day game was just a show of excitement and relief at what we’d thought would be the end of inconsistency
As far as the feel of superiority….I promise I’m about as far from that as possible. Hell, i think we’re cursed. I do think we will be a great team again though in the way that the true powers don’t disappear. Notre Dame will never be a bad team year in and out. Michigan, USC, OSU, OU, etc will never be down for long.
The Alabama-Auburn thing….I can’t really explain it because there isnt another state that has 2 teams as powerful. But it doesnt matter what one side says to the other. It’s a rivalry….the most intense one in sports. Of course we are going to say “you can’t pull off the things we can and we’ll always be Alabama, blah blah blah” and you’ll say what you say, but it’s two great teams battling for one state. We owned it for a while, the NCAA helped you take it over for a while(sorry, had to do it) and soon we’ll battle again. See you at BDS.
