I like Free Sample's list, although I'd have Hatcher/Johnson ahead of Strong. We'd like to get an offensively minded head coach (can't get more offensively minded than Hatcher running the Air Raid) but if they won't go, Strong would make a great head coach, as long as we could get an OC. It might mean Tenuta leaves, as he'd probably land as DC at LSU after Pelini goes to Nebraska, but with a defensive mind at HC, it's not as big a loss as it could be.

Good riddance to Chan's departure. Few coaches in football have mismanaged their personnel the way he has at Georgia Tech over the last six seasons. Instead of spending four years failing to develop the undersized Reggie Ball into a pass-first quarterback in a pro-style offense, Chan should have recruited a more appropriate quarterback to his system or installed a more appropriate system for his quarterback.

As much as I hate to defend Reggie Ball, he would have been serviceable at least if he was allowed to move outside the pocket. The Yellow Jackets' roster would have been ideal for the spread option: Ball would have seen the field better without having to look over his linemen; P.J. Daniels and Tashard Choice would have been more productive out of the backfield; and opposing defenses would have been forced to move their focus away from Calvin Johnson. If the team was running the spread last year, they would have been a top-10 team, and Johnson would have won the Heisman.

So long, Chan. Have fun taking seven wins a year and a .500 conference winning percentage somewhere else.

Maybe I was wrong, Tech is the Minnesota of the ACC (Minnesota was big in the 40s too I think).

And now Tech's thinking of getting in touch with Glen Mason, the Chan of the Big 10.

Chan getting fired is not about Tech fans thinking that they should win the MNC every year, its about having some sort of hope that they MIGHT catch lightning in a bottle every so often, like in 1990 or during the Joe Hamilton-Ralph Friedgen years. Chan doesn't give Tech fans that kind of optimism. Trust me, there were no Tech fans trumpeting their division title last year as a turning point. With the talent in this state, it is possible.

As for candidates, if they want flash, instant credibility, and an immediate shot in the arm for the fanbase and ticket sales, then Terry Bowden is the guy. But if they are truly willing to try to build something and be patient, then my choices would be

1. Strong, even if it means Tenuta leaves
2. Hatcher
3. Johnson

with the condition that Giff Smith stays on as Recruiting Coordinator.

#39: I don't know, maybe Charlie Trippi and Frank Sinkwich, another Heisman winner and one of college football's greatest players, EVAR (TM)!

Plus, I mean, a good part of our legacy is beating you guys like a drum almost every season since the 50's. Here's to Reggie Ball, and the Chantastic Gailey.

Back in the day at Hawaii games, every UH touchdown would bring on a confetti bonanza from the stands, not to mention the wasteful but visually appealing practice of uncoiling entire rolls of toilet paper from the upper decks. Last friday's shower of paper wasn't too bad by comparison.

And the actual football match was a good one, from a Hawaii perspective, anyway. The arc traced by the ball in that one long touchdown pass from Colt Brennan to C. J. Hawthorne was like the graph from a mathematical proof of awesome.

@ 39:

Wally Butts?

Of course, you might as well say to TAFKATOSU to "throw out Woody Hayes and Jim Tressell" or tell Orson to "throw out Spurrier and Tebow"...

Can I go ahead and start the rumor that the SEC and C-USA want to trade Ole Miss for Southern Miss?

Totally unsubstantiated, of course...but wouldn't people believe it anyway?

I think that having Joe Hamilton as the Heisman runner-up also has something to do with it. And as happy as I am that the Institute is making a change, we did win our division last year.

UNC is the Ole Miss of the ACC.

33 - I still have love for the Irish. Wooo, big win over Stanford! Orson should mention Jim Harbaugh trying to kill his QB after the QB got concussed bad and was put back on the field. The announcers were talking like they were covering a funeral.

And I'm finally sober. I was drunk since about, ohh, 38-14 Saturday afternoon. West F'in Virginia is way too f'in good.
