GREG ROBINSON CAN COACH, JUST ASK GREG ROBINSON
Turn off the snark meter for an instant. Difficult, we know, but we swear there’s a switch for this. Off? Excellent.
Now critically evaluate the following statement made by Greg Robinson, football coach for Syracuse. Give points for empirical support and evidence presented. Ready, scientists? Empiricize!
I’m good. Just ask me.“I think my record can show that I’m a good football coach,” the 7-26 Robinson said three days after falling to South Florida, 41-10. “Do I make every decision that’s perfect? I can’t tell you that. No. I believe that if we continue to recruit and continue to get good players, then we’re going to be a good football team.”
Greg Robinson is 7-26 thus far. His best record at Syracuse was 4-8 in 2006. The average margin of loss for the Orangemen has gone from 17.4 points in 05 to 23.5 points in each loss for 2007, and that’s with games against Cincinnati and Connecticut to come. His classes have averaged around 53rd in Rivals’ class rankings. He’s 2-8 thus far.
By the numbers, this does not support a statement of being a good coach, making this an inaccurate statement at best. He did, according to the report, pound the lectern 24 times in a span of 45 seconds, an average of 1.88 seconds between thumps. This is ample evidence that for all his flaws as a self-evaluator of his own coaching record, he could make a passable drummer.

If Robinson is a good coach, what does that make Steve Kragthorpe at Louisville?
I’m glad I asked. It makes him a candidate for the Coaching Hall of Fame.

You stat nerds and your “numbers”. Coaching is about passion. It’s about fire. That’s why I’m pounding this lectern. I’m passionate and firey. Do I win football games or even compete with teams who have similar or superior talent? I don’t know. I’ll leave that to you geeks. Now I’m going to go home and make love to my wife. Passion and fire people, she loves it. And so should you.

I like Robinson. He’s turned Syracuse into such a shithole that there’s no way Edsall is taking the job.
I like Kragthorpe too. If Louisville didn’t call 33 screen passes against UConn, they might have won. I mean, geez, why would you have your NFL QB throw the ball past the line of scrimmage? That’s just crazy silly talk.

jon,
you bring up a good point. if robinson is a good coach, then what is ty willingham? a great coach? hell no, ty is a shitty coach who cant win (except at stanford at a down PX year, while getting rolled by texas and in the RB). on top of that ty gets $1.5 mil a year to coach uw to a shitty 3-7 record.
isnt america great? you can have no talent whatsoever, and get paid tons of money to do it. just ask william hung.

…which is why I’m announcing my candidacy for all major available jobs. Head Coach only, BCS conference only. I last played organized football in sixth grade for the 2-7 St Pius X Lions, so I’m pretty sure I could get the job done like Robinson, Kragthorpe, or Charlie Weis. I expect a generous salary, full dental coverage, and a Buick. Or anything recommended by Ara Parseghian or the Orgeron.

Notice, though, that when asked whether he thought the team would be better in 2007 than 2-8, he said “Hell yes.” Not yes but hell yes. That is the kind of enthusiasm that bespeaks eventual improvement. You think Callahan is dropping any hells these days in Lincoln? Or that milquetoast Franchione? 7-26 only looks bad until you spice it up with some mild profanity.

Hey 8, what was the final score in those BCS games?
Weis was feasting on cupcakes (literally and figuratively) with leftover talent rather than recruiting and coaching. Now it’s biting him in his substantial and arrogant ass.
With the same schedule and the same sweetheart BCS deal, Syracuse could probably have made a BCS game and lost by the same scores as ND.

13 – Notre Dame was down 27-20 to Ohio State with three minutes to go and lost by 14. Wow, quite the ass-kicking.
And if it was just leftover talent…why couldn’t Willingham do a GD thing with them? Please keep your Weis-bashing to this year. He still found a way to win 9 games each year without a defense.
How come Jeff Tedford is still a genius despite Cal flaking out year after year? Why is Rich Rodriguez still a hot item despite his team’s never fulfilling potential?
Weis will have his opportunity to prove he’s a coach next year. And fyi, ND has played by far the hardest schedule in the country by playing 10 straight bowl teams. Maybe they should become an SEC team and load up against Troy, La. Tech and the Citadel.

Absolutely true. His record CAN show that he is a good football coach. However, it DOES not. A record is a very effective indicator of the quality of a coach and can show whether they are “good” or not.

The tOSU/Notre Dame bowl game never felt in doubt at the time. Notre Dame was dominated, the Buckeyes just didn’t run up the score.
And Weis does deserve some mockery because of the adulation from the domers in spite of his lack of quality wins since…forever.
Other than losing close to USC in 2005, what is his best win so far? And do you really want to hang your hat on whatever one you choose?

I was a fan of SU football since the ‘59 National Championship season – - and continued supporting the program through Pasqualoni’s best years. But – - NOW – - SU football is an embarassment – - and it is seemingly obvious that the new Chancellor, the new Athletic Director and, especially, the new Coach, do not have a sufficient commitment nor sufficient knowledge, expertise and experience to develop and manage a successful football program. Time to get rid of all three!
( Is it not ironic that a native northeasterner, a former SU quarterback, and an SU bachelor’s and master’s degree-holder – - who is also married to an SU alumna – - has turned a former non-entity, going-nowhere-doing-nothing, football program into the talk of the Big East?)
Robinson and the AD must go – - and the Chancellor should at least engage someone with expertise in developing a top-tier college football program as a working consultant.
