Illinois 28, Ohio State 21. The season in the boathouse continues. MAO!

Illini are indeed getting better and better, and Ohio State runs aground at home.

I was at the Illinois/OSU game tonight. I was wearing my Illinois gear (I’m an alum) and many of the fans who said something to me were very nice. As I was walking out, many congratulated me regarding the Illinois team and I even saw this one gentleman about as old as Moses with a cane wearing an Illinois jacket getting a lot of congrats and back pats from tOSU fans as they walked by. So contrary to what a lot of stereotyping absolutists around here say regarding tOSU fans, I saw a lot of courtesy, class and respect from them tonight despite their loss..was a great tough fought game.

Although Ohio State will probably drop below the rest of the 1 loss teams, the loss is not all that bad when compared to the rest of the 1 loss teams in the top 5.
1 Loss Teams
Kentucky is 7-3 beat LSU
Colorado is 5-6 beat OU
California is 6-3 beat Oregon (losing to USC right now)
USF is 6-3 beat UWV
FSU is 6-4 beat BC
Ill is 8-3 beat OSU
Of the other 1 loss teams, Mizzu and Arizona State have the “best” losses with both of their losses coming to teams with only 1 loss and still ranked in the top 10.

They would have played for the Big 10 title regardless. Resting Henne and Hart shows that they were focusing on OSU. Not that their performance should be completely excused, but I got the feelign they really didn’t give a shit.

And Bull-Gator, yeah, I saw that. Saw the score at 49-45 NTU, figured it was probably late 4th quarter … then did a double take when it said halftime.
I’d drop OSU to about 6th right now – Oregon, LSU, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri (and maybe Arizona State) move up. The loss is better than Oklahoma’s, but Oklahoma also has the big win over Missouri (better than any of OSU’s wins to date). WFV’s resume is almost comparable, but I don’t think their wins are as good as beating Wisconsin and Penn State.

tOSUBuckeyes, I agree that in comparison to the other losses that other 1 loss teams have, this doesn’t look bad. But you are only looking at half of the equation. The reason people have been looking at Ohio State questionably and saying they have to win out to get in is because the Buckeyes have beat absolutely no quality teams.
Their OOC schedule sucked, they have no current top 25 teams on their resume and the Big 10 has done very badly out of conference. If not for the historical sucktitude of ND, the Big 10 would look even worse OOC.
So don’t look to the quality of the teams you’ve lost to, look to the quality of the teams you’ve beat. You’ve not beat anyone of merit. Have fun losing to ASU in the Rose Bowl.

Offensive coordinators, take note….Juice Williams and Dennis Dixon are the poster children of how to beat tOSU and Michigan…..and a news update, Knowshown Moreno has just scored again on Auburn, and JPW has just thrown his second game …..all the way out of bounds and past the point of no return…lets see, a fumble at the most crucial part of LSU game, and a Pick 6 vs Croomster …..Tim Tebow just completed a pass to himself to score on OBC, againnnnnn, just pitched it up like Pitch up and Smear, except SC didnt do much smearin…..

About 11 months ago, I took it for granted that Jim Tressel was one of the great gameday coaches in college football. Now in those 11 months he’s been soundly outcoached by Urban Meyer and Ron Zook, two coaches who are… not exactly great gamecallers. So… yeah. Jim Tressel, welcome to the “questionable in big games?” club.
(Although, I suppose Urban shows flashes of good playcalling, especially when he has more than a week to prepare.)

I wouldn’t say he was soundly out coached by Zook. I think Zook’s athletes played better and made plays when they needed to make plays.
If losing by 7 to an up and coming team that is way underrated is the only blemish on a season where you are breaking in a new quarterback and guys all over the field who are replacing guys who left early in the draft last year, then I can live with that.
Especially this year with all of the carnage.
I think the Florida game and yesterday revealed just how much we miss Mark Dantonio and his defensive adjustments.
Give Illinois some credit, they ran the read-option to perfection and didn’t make any mistakes. I don’t care how good a team is, if another team prepares well enough and executes their game plan to perfection, even the best of teams can be beaten, just ask every team not named Kansas.

So dual threat quarterbacks are only successful in the Big Ten? Last time I checked no one in the Big 12 or USC had an answer for Vince Young – in fact, in 2005 we had them dead in the rights and they manage to get off the hook. Only 1 team had an answer for Tebow in the SEC last year. No one in the Pac10 seems to have an answer for Denis Dixon at Oregon.
Interesting side note:
2005: Penn State 12-1, 2006 Wisconsin 12-1, 2007 Ohio State 12-1? If we finish out 12-1 it will be the third year in a row that a team from the Big Ten only has 1 blemish and that one blemish coming from conference play.
Over the last 11 years:
1996 11-1 Ohio State (L Mich)
1998 12-1 Ohio State (L Mich St)
1998 11-1 Wisconsin (L Mich)
2005 12-1 Penn St (L Mich)
2006 12-1 Wisconsin (L Mich)

tOSU,
I guess it all comes down to playing at least 6 games with opponents of ILLNOIS type caliber talent, thats what everyone is griping about….the waltz, the same song and dance to the Big Game, with only Michigan being the only real challenge, which remains to be seen, since they are missing key pieces to their puzzle. If Michigan beats OSU with out their key players, then it will be pure coaching on their part and OSU giving the game away. Everyone basically, after last years MNC game, where OSU was basically just gonna blow out Fla, and then things went terribly wrong for tOSU>
This year, the media, the fans, always were waiting for the other shoe to fall, if and when tOSU got there again this year and would be facing, in many peoples opinion, a much more talented group from the SEC this year than what Ohio State saw last year, and would expect the same results, barring bonehead coaching. It comes down to this, if your gonna be the heavy weight champion, you need to fight heavyweights, not
Glass Joe’s, then expect to jump in the ring with a Mike Tyson- in- his prime-natural born- killer and expect to win when you have never taken a real punch the whole year..thats just crazy delusional thinking….I am beginning to think alot of tOSU fans didnt see the same game the rest of the nation saw….based on the comments I read the score must have been 18-17, with a 6 FG from Fla since they couldnt move the ball on tOSU, not the 41-17 drubbing that it turned out to be…the In-n-Out Curse…..til someone from the Big 10 drubs LSU 41-17, we will then talk about Big 10 type of football….

UI has played 3 teams that were/are in top 5. UI beats 2 of them. The third, against Mizzou, they were inside the 20 with less than a minute to win.
I know you SEC folks have a hard time understanding this, but you have a losing record against the B10 in bowl games since 2001, and for all of the talk about the NC, the SEC ended up 1-2 against the B10 last year.
Heard all year how overrated Wisconsin/PSU were, then they soundly beat the SEC west champs and Tennessee.

I usually dont put much stock in Bowl games, since most of the times, there are coaching changes happening , players that are high draft picks sitting out, and most of the time the players are drunk…the only bowl game that matters is the MNC, thats what I gauge Conference dominance off of…. the best from one conference playing the “best” of another conference, not the mediocre stuff in the middle, the cream of the crop. I promise ya, the 2nd best SEC team is GA, not TN, and the third best is FLA, not TN.
IF TN gets to the SEC championship, expect a blowout from LSU, a warmup for whoever gets to #2…hopefully KU..they play solid mistake free disciplined football

D-Nice,
The Iowa game (on the road with a young team) was sandwiched in between two big home wins against Wisc and PSU and a night game the following week versus Michigan. Looked like a classic trap game. Zook’s game day coaching deficiencies were on full display that day too.
On two occasions he chose to accept penalties where the Illini made third down stops. On both occasions the Hawks converted, and on one they threw for a TD.
The Illini probably would have won the game but for a TE lining up incorrectly on a 70+ yard go ahead score late in the 4th. The Hawks did a great job containing Mendenhall as well.

Seriously Mr PP (ha ha ha!) I don’t think you look at all the facts.
#1 Florida whipped my Buckeyes damn good last year. They deserved the national title. Hats off to them. But to imply that the MNC was indicative of OSU’s play the entire season is BS. OSU didn’t get up for the big game and got beat. However, they had a 60 day layoff and a WR got injured on the first play who would have required sometimes double coverage, which would not have let your D run as wild at Troy Smith. Would Ted Ginn have meant an OSU victory? No but it would have changed the game plan. The 60 days off is a bigger factor. That is what ruins the MNC for me. Any team can lay an egg after 60 days off.
#2 if your gonna be the heavy weight champion, you need to fight heavyweights
Have you looked at OSU’s schedule? Last season they became the first #1 team to play 3 #2 ranked teams in the same season.
As to saying they don’t fight heavyweights, OSU did a home and home with Texas (who won the MNC and should have lost in Columbus). Next 2 years they do a home and home with USC. 2 years after that a home and home with Miami. After that a home and home with Virginia Tech. The Washington game this year was leftover from a home and home in the 90’s (when Wash was good)
Show me an SEC OOC schedule like that. OSU would probably schedule a home and home with an SEC team but none would be willing to leave the south.
You use the transitive properties to say that OSU doesn’t play anyone. Well you can make any argument you want using transitive properties, which fans always do while ignoring the same criticisms that could be made for their team (which is why we need a playoff)
For example. Kansas State nearly beat Auburn. Auburn beat Florida, and Nebraska beat Kansas State severely. Using your logic, Nebraska would kill Florida. See how ridiculous that is?
PS Someone asked “why is their someone in an Illinois shirt on the OSU sidelines? Don’t know if it was answered, and assumed everyone knew this, but the ballboy wears the opposing teams colors on their sideline so he is easily spotted by the refs.
Predict the MNC. I am going to say LSU will lay an egg, and Oklahoma will beat KS. So the MNC will be an Oregon team who plays no one, vs. Oklahoma.

2 of those “#2″ teams were Michigan and Texas, who were both exposed as frauds. Texas with late season autoerotic asphyxiations against K-St. and A&M, and Michigan in their bowl game against USC.
The other #2 team was Florida, who pounded that Buckeye ass so harshly I almost felt bad for them. Almost.
So spare me the talk of their tough schedule. The only thing that little facturd shows is how flawed the voting system is.

You are right, when OSU plays 2 #2 teams in the regular season, they are frauds. Michigan loses their bowl game and is exposed as frauds. What does that say about Arkansas and Tennessee getting beat by Big 10 teams?
When a 2 loss Pac-10 team beats Tennessee, when a 3 loss Kentucky beats the best team in the SEC, when an unranked Auburn beats Florida, when an unranked Big East team and an unranked Miss St beats Auburn, etc , etc , etc , etc it just shows how damn superior the SEC is than everyone else.

In regards to your suggestion to check CFDataWarehouse, no thanks. I am sure I could find facts to back up any argument I wanted, just like you did. That is the problem with college football, in the absence of a playoff system people use facts to say whatever argument they want to make. It is how sports analysts get people inflamed enough to listen, and call in.
To use a movie quote:
“People want playoffs, Mr. President, and in the absence of playoffs, they’ll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want playoffs. They’re so thirsty for it they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there’s no playoffs, they’ll drink up twisted facts to make any argument.”
“People don’t drink up twisted facts because they’re thirsty. They drink up twisted facts because they don’t know the difference.”
