Matt Ryan is a very excitable young man, as evidenced by post-winning-TD spewing live on television in the Virginia Tech game last week. Craig James call really made the moment, though, uttered a few seconds earlier. “Oh, yeah, he’s givin’ it up.” Arizona State QB Rudy Carpenter did not throw passes in practice yesterday due to a sprained thumb. Carpenter injured the thumb on a strange botched play during ASU’s game against Cal this past Saturday. Turning to hand off to the running back, Carpenter slammed into the back and jammed the thumb, bending over with pain the instant it happened. Erickson says that if Carpenter can’t start against Oregon, sophomore Danny Sullivan will play. USF not only has sprouted a successful football program and convinced the all-important singlet-wearing demographic of the hotness of USF football, they’re running at a profit after a mere decade in existence. You’re just winning with Saban’s players! Except for the ones who score points! If it was true last year, it’s certainly not true this year. From The Advocate, which is a newspaper in Louisiana, and not the gay magazine. (NTTAWWT.) LSU’s success this season is a statistical mixture. Of the 294 points the Tigers have scored, 240 came from players who signed or walked on with LSU after Saban left. Meanwhile, there’s not a single player on Alabama’s roster who Nick Saban signed! Not one! Oh yeah, where’s the real scandal now, huh? HUH? Misery makes great quotes. Joe Ganz will start for the Nebraska Cornhuskers now that Sam Keller is out for the year with an injury, something he thinks is awesome! Uh, I mean… Asked how it felt to get his first start, he was almost giddy. “It’s awesome,” he said. He quickly corrected himself. “I mean, it’s bittersweet because you don’t want it to come through an injury,” he said. “You don’t want Sam to get hurt. But that’s the way it happened. I can’t control it. All I can do is be ready for my team and hopefully win these next three games.” Um..yeah. That’s what I meant to say. Huskers wideout Nate Swift has an equally tone-deaf comment on the situation, showing that the athletics budget in media relations was definitely cut to make up for the skyrocketing paper budget needed to cover Callahan’s massive playbook. “Your team is kind of in a shambles, so with Joe going in there, the only way he can go is up, no matter what he does,” receiver Nate Swift said Tuesday. Oh, don’t say that. That’s when the football gods break out the quality lightning bolts, Nate. The ones with some stank on ‘em. (HT: Dave)

Saban is a brilliant, brilliant man. He has figured out that all you gotta do is leave every job after a couple of years and while you can neither be blamed for, nor take credit for, any team’s failure or success, you are still making $4 mil and you’re neck deep in drunken Alabama cougar meat.

Hell, if I was Ryan, I’d be spewing too. He’d just completely blown and then completely resuscitated his Heisman hopes in one 60 minute game. His mind was probably reeling from the sheer strangeness of it all.
I mean, he probably completely discounted himself after those first 56 minutes, but even someone who’s barely ever watched College Football knows that any big comeback will make people forget what happened before it. Nervous Nelly was just stunned he’d played himself out and then right back into contention.

#9 – totally agree. I hate the discussion but of course will add my $0.02. Saban so far has been pretty successful with Shula’s players. That’s saying something about his ability and the staff.
Additionally, Miles beat OK a couple times while at Okie state so he’s gotta be a pretty solid coach. Then again, Mike Dubose beat Spurrier twice…in one season.

Well Shula isn’t exactly a hard act to follow. But that being said, didn’t Shula have a 10-0 start in 2005? So is Saban playing catch up at 6-2?
But back to 2007, the one win that Alabama has to hang their hat on is UT. How impressive is UA’s win over the Great Pumpkin this year anyway? Does anybody know the answer to that one? I know I don’t.
Saban’s resurrection of the LSU program is not hard to figure out. He locked down the boarders of one of the richest talent pools in the country. Why know one else could do this before is hard to fathom, given the lack of an in-state rival. But Miles is still landing top calsses from the same sources, so he is certainly holding serve on that front and has more horses than Saban ever will at Alabama.
Les will be more in this one.

Tiger-
We are hanging our hat on the confidence of the players apparently instilled by Saban. They do seem to be playing as a team, and playing harder.
Yes, we hang our hat on the UT win. This season, who knows what it means. The same UT team that whipped UGA, who whipped Florida. Same UGA that beat Bama. Same way Auburn can be one point worse than LSU on the road, but 5 points worse than Miss St at home, a team LSU trounced. The same MSU that beat UK, who beat LSU, who beat Florida, who beat UK.
Also, could you please bring something new to the table? Perhaps some analysis? Something other than the worthless crap that is pasted over all other message boards? We know how the argument goes by now.
Blah blah blah lock down state blah blah blah
Louisiana top prospects blah blah blah no instate rival rabble rabble. There’s plenty of time for things to change before Feb, but Alabama doesn’t seem to have an instate rival right now, at least as far as recruiting goes.

Tiger – it was actually a 9-0 start in 05. While that was impressive, the only “good” wins were against Meyer’s 1st UF season and a UT team that went 5-6 that season. Both wins at home.
The verdict is obviously still out on Saban, but I don’t see how you can argue against him being a success.

8 out of 11 losing seasons came from Finebaum’s article, I believe.
And Lowder, what the fuck are you talking about? The reason I addressed in state recruiting is because of the argument put forth by Tiger that the major reason for Saban’s success at LSU was his ability to lock down in state talent due to no in state rival. I even qualified it with the fact that there are several months until signing day. Typical booger reading comp.
Be careful what arguments you post on here. Tray Blackmon may use them in his research paper “the relationship between major college football and socioneconomics, whatever that means”

I don’t know why people keeping making that statement about LSU’s record before Saban
Now #21 not sure what you’ve been watching but Auburn sold out the Ole Miss game and has had over 82k for every game this year. If your home schedule included SEC games against Miss St., Ole Miss, Vandy, and bama you would have trouble selling season tickets too.
Bama is so proud of their new stadium, and rightfully so. But they went for years and years with a stadium smaller than AU’s and with a horrible playing field. I had stated for many years that I was amazed that a school with that much love for it’s football program played on such a bad surface and played in one of the smaller stadiums in the SEC.
Did Auburn go around for the last 20 years bragging they had the biggest stadium in Alabama?

TIGERinATL says:
Well Saban has an impressive commitment list right now. You’re right that recruiting is a long way from over, and Tubs classes never shape up until late anyway.
Also, remember that AU signed 30 players last year and has a very small senior class. No matter how many stars they have, AU won’t sign the numbers to rank high in recruiting this year.
But you guys can have the recruiting IB every year as long as AU keeps winning on the field.
And MP, I’d rather have the fan base that AU has any day than have the 100,000 gomers that bama will have in BDS.

Pete says:
The 240 out of 294 number is silly. Mr. Dubois clearly didn’t take any Stats in college.
You can’t compare a sum of individual points to a team total because the sum of individual points is greater than the sum of team points because of passing touchdowns.
Not counting Perrilloux (who is as much a Miles recruit as a Saban recruit),
Saban’s recruits have 20 TDs this year
Miles’ recruits have 22
The Miles number includes Sophomores that signed with Saban but didnt’ come to campus until Miles arrived.
The bottom line is that the whole debate is ridiculous… but it’s ridiculous on both sides. People saying that Miles’ success is all because of Saba are idiots. Likewise with the people who try to argue that Saban doesn’t have anything to do with the current success LSU has had.

Tony the Tiger says:
As an LSU fan, I can honestly say Nick Saban was the reason our football program was resurrected. He is a PROGRAM BUILDER, and a great recruiter. Nobody knows for sure what he will do long term (since he hasn’t stayed long at any job he has had), but he really only had 2 outstanding years at LSU – 2001 & 2003 – where we won the SEC and National Championship, and only one year with less than 2 losses. Where Saban made up was in facility building, money raising and recruiting – his specialties. He was masterful at deflecting criticism and accepting praise (i.e. players didn’t execute, play for 60 minutes, the process bla bla).
Miles is more of a player’s coach. He comes across as a dumbass on TV sometimes, but he is actually a very smart, genuine coach. The players respect him and the coaches are content. Miles does a very good job at surrounding himself with great coaching talent. I have never seen a more talented group of coordinators and position coaches at LSU in the last 30 years as I do now.
So give the credit to Saban for awakening the sleeping giant. Give Miles the credit for not wrecking the car and improving the program.

Trickett comes from West Virginia, where the Mountaineers have posted back-to-back 11-win seasons. He recruited star quarterback Patrick White to WVU, and was among the key recruiters at Auburn under Terry Bowden from 1993-1998. Fisher, also an Auburn assistant during the Terry Bowden era, went on to coach seven seasons at LSU. He counts LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who will likely be an NFL first-round draft in April, among his prized recruiting catches…thats mad skillz on the recruiting trail bro..

Auburn’s official athletic site lists average attendances greater than 80000 since 1993. Not good enough? New Mexico State’s box scores records the attendance at Auburn’s second least exciting game this year at 83,012. LSUSports.net records the attendance of the LSU/Auburn game in ‘06 at 87,451. The Big East records the attendance for this year’s late-as-hell South Florida game as 82,617.
Again, comparing JHE to JHW is like comparing an 800 pound gorilla to an 802 pound gorilla. It doesn’t matter. But nice try, though.
