Ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times. "

Yup. Stanford beating USC qualifies as that. In case you don't know what a bomb sounds like when it goes off, it's Tiger Stadium when a USC defeat is announced.
Talk to you on EDSBS Live at 7 p.m. Verne Lundquist is going to try to help us make head cheese of the scraps of sense left in college football 2007. Oh, and Baton Rouge on game day is a flaming bacchanal on wheels careening downhill toward Anarchyville...without government licensing of any sort, mind you. An unreal place to sit through an unreal day.

Rankings, like Newton, have a superfical appeal: there are better teams, there are worse teams, and the former should beat the latter. The problem, however, is that we live not in a deterministic world but a probabilistic one, where reality can be completely nonintuitive — and cosmic strangeness occurs (e.g., Stanford beats USC), even more so when the outcomes are being decided in large part by players too young to vote.
Let’s recognize the 2007 college football season for what it is: not an ineluctable progression towards resolving whether a celebrated condom can sheathe a chainsaw, but a recognition of and homage to the intrinsic beauty of chaos.

UM-ASU was not on the board because Vegas does not put odds for I-A vs. I-AA matchups. It had nothing to do with the presumed size of the spread. And even ASU had been coming off a 14-1 season, not 1-11 like Stanford.

USC – Welcome to 1998.
28-24 Michigan State over Ohio State. Should have never happened, if we play Michigan State 10 times we should win 11 of them, yet 5 turnovers and terrible weather, along with an opportunistic MSU team who I guess believed they could win, pulled out the upset.
It’s a bitch, but it’s why we love the game so much.

The game reminded me of #4 Ohio State vs #2 Texas in 2005 in Columbus. OSU led the entire game and looked dominant. Vince Young hits Limas Sweed on a fade route with a minute and change to go to take the lead. Texas went on to win the national title. Will the same forecast true for the Tigers?

USC was #2.
This is what is lost in the shuffle: Pete Carroll is not that good a coach. He is a great recruiter(but then again, how hard is it to tell an 18 year old “Come to LA and have lots of sex with girls that are hotter than the hottest girl in your town, play for a NC with a bunch of other great athletes, and get drafted in the first round”) but when USC had their ‘real’ success(meaning NC’s) Norm Chow was calling the offense. Pete Carroll was a bad coach in the NFL…..does no one remember this? Every year, USC blows one or two games to a team that they should cornhole, because Carroll doesnt have them properly prepared and they play lackadaisically. I actually said something earlier in the week about Stanford beating USC because they wouldnt be prepared….and because of the Ewing theory(per Bill Simmons) with their QB. I look forward to 3 years from now when Carroll is coaching the Chargers to 6 wins a year while LT contemplates stabbing him.

Yeah…we have some weird syndrome(we’ve had it for a couple of years now) where we let piss-ant(albeit a piss-ant that won 9 games last year) teams come back on us after we get out to a 3-4 touchdown lead and they come back on us. Happened with Arky too. I don’t like it, but I’ll take the win and be happy. Maybe this will cure that syndrome.
With all that going on though, i never actually thought we were going to lose that game for some reason. I’m usually filled with an ‘oh shit’ feeling if it’s close. I definitely was against Arky, Georgia, and had all but surrendered to FSU in ‘turd bowl 2007’ by the time JPW fumbled. This one didnt worry me, but not stomping on their throat early does.

Great point – I look at Saban’s career and it is clearly evident that assistant coaches and high recruiting classes have been the reason for his success – it is not his defensive mind or his play calling. We all saw that in the NFL, where free agency, the salary cap, and the draft are the great equalizers of coaching talent.
Dantonio, Fisher, and Muschamp were big time assistants for Saban.
Saban is but one man – without a staff of stud assistants Bama fans can hang it up.
by The Artist Formerly Known as tOSUBuckeyes on Oct 7, 2007 12:11 PM EDT reply actions
- - the Chargers would still take that over Norv Turner right now. Nevertheless, I digress, and admit your point. The coaches clearly didn’t do enough work this week with the passing game, considering that not only were the top two running backs in the Factory were hurt, but two offensive linemen (including center Kris O’Dowd) were hurt.
Also, inexcusable to have a defense give up so many yards on penalties. That’s really on the coaching staff. If you keep playing every week like you’re going to roll over someone in the second half, it’s going to backfire eventually. Carroll had his on-field “I’m Keith Hernandez!” moment before the end of the half when calling four straight rushes near the Stanford goal line and not getting in the end zone — he got too cocky.

So does Stanford winning mean that no-one, I mean no-one, and I’m looking you right in the eyes Saban, can complain about the equitable distribution of players and the uneven academic standards between conferences and schools?
And how do we really assess these losses? Does Stanford beating USC mean USC was terribly overrated or is the PAC10 just that tough?
Or should we all just finally admit to ourselves and everyone around us that conference play is just tough, no matter what conference you’re in. Especially in the PAC10 where they all play each other every single year.
Of course SEC fans would say that only the SEC is tough, but the fact of the matter is that top ranked teams from all conferences are losing to unranked teams in their own conference. And there is no conference who has clearly dominated OOC games.
SEC: Cal kills Tenn; Mizzu kills Ole Miss; USF beats Auburn; FSU manhandles Bama; KState hung with Auburn for 58 minutes; Houston was taking shots to win the game against Bama.
Perhaps it’s just the rankings – perhaps we should completely ignore the rankings until the first BCS rankings come out.

Here is the thing about Saban though, I don’t blame him for Miami’s woes. I think that with just about any coach in that situation, they would’ve have been a bad team. The defense was ancient when he got there and the offense was non-existent. I think they can blame Pitt’s coach for that. The first year, 7-9 was looked at as a miracle season because the team was just that bad. Then they added Culpepper and several people picked them as a superbowl favorite….only Culpepper wasn’t healthy so they had to rely on….John Joseph Harrington. The defense was still very good, and has regressed under Cam Cameron(as has the offense strangely) I think all coaches are only a reflection of the people around them. Hell, Bear Bryant said that 30 years ago. The thing is, I think he has the people around him to succeed. Currently the number 4 recruiting class (according to rivals) and we’ll probably lock up the number 1 player(Julio) while our asst coaches are fairly solid. Kevin Steele is a good D-coordinator and a great recruiter. Applewhite is growing into the position(and will be better when he get athletes to play the system he prefers), so I think that we’ll be a good team in a couple of years. I know most people think Saban is an ass, and I know that you personally don’t like Alabama because of the fan base(even though ever fan base has looneytoons)…but do you really think they won’t be successful in a couple of years? I mean, if someone would’ve told me “you’ll be 4-2 after 6 games” i would’ve said “sounds about right” with expectations of an 8 win season(not counting a bowl) I think thats still about where we’ll be at this year. Realistically, is there almost any chance they won’t be a really good team in 3 years? That’s without my crimson colored glasses.

Only time will tell. Not sure about that #4 ranking Scout.com has Bama at like 12 or something, plus it is only October. Florida’s ranked 27th or something like that and we all know that is not going to last. I do find it very interesting that Saban will give out up to 29 scholarships. That is an insanely high number. Tressel averages 15-18 a year, so I’m not sure what is going on there with 29 – perhaps he’s planning on non-qualifiers not making it or something.
Here’s the deal with Saban and Bama. I honestly don’t believe that he will do at Bama what was done at LSU. Here’s how I come to that conclusion.
1. The SEC was a different breed of cat while he was at LSU, much different. Spurrier was in and out of the league, Bama was on probation, [Name Redacted] was in the league, Miles and his staff were not in the league, etc. Bottom line, the SEC is a lot more competitive now than when he was at LSU.
2. Saban hit recruiting gold at LSU. I find it all too interesting that all of the sudden now that Saban is at Bama that the high school football in Alabama is just off the charts…especially when Hoover goes to Ohio and loses to the 3rd, possibly 4th best team in the state. I don’t trust the recruiting websites or guys like Lugenbill.
3. Saban and Bama are not really a good fit. Saban fit at LSU. He’s already called the fans out about being classless, boosters are calling his assistants at 2 in the morning to complain about play calling, and he and his wife were mobbed by a bunch of drunks at the airport. I can only imagine what was going through his mind when the state trooper had to rip Collette Connell off of him – imagine what her breath smelled like – you know Saban could smell it. That is insane.
4. Saban has no buyout, no loyalty, and no ties to the University of Alabama.
5. Jimmy Sexton is his agent. Need I say more?

If I were a betting man, which I am, I would bet that USC pulls its act together and stops shitting the bad on the back stretch of their schedule. Despite Mark May’s “analysis” they’re not going to be playing for a MNC, and a Rose Bowl is optimistic, but come on…they’re not THAT bad.

Saban just applauded the fans and the tradition after homecoming. Said it was very important to him to see all that and to be affiliated with it. If you don’t think LSU fans can be just as crazy as Bama fans, you haven’t been to Baton Rouge, Saban’s used to it. Different recruiting sites rank different, on rivals(the one i usually use) we are number 4…but all that doesnt mean shit, its how you can get your players to perform and how their bodies and minds mature from high school to college. Last go around though, Spurrier was at the helm of a legit powerhouse, Fulmer wasn’t completely incompetent, Ole Miss was winning 8 games a year instead of 3, Miss St had talent because they were paying them(and Miles will be coaching that other team you hate next year, although I’m not all that worried about him if he stays. Not cockiness, he just doesnt scare me like Richt or other SEC coaches do). The SEC has been stacked for a while. It’s a battle every week. You are right about one thing….Only time will tell. I will bet anyone(in Orson’s words) a whole shiny dollar that he’ll still be coach in 6 years though.

I think Michigan is due for a win over OSU, and given the number of upsets this year I kind of expect it. However, on paper I can’t see Michigan beating OSU. They have a weak offense and a mediocre defense. But, stranger things have happened (and frequently, this year). Wisconsin and Penn State don’t seem to be the threats they were anticipated to be – but again, it’s the year of the upset.
UC’s defense is playing well enough to beat WVU and USF, but those will still be very tough games for them. I think they can do it, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Here is the problem with college football. It doesn’t get any more obvious than this 4 minute 29 second video. Only 1 of two things can be true:
1. Spencer Tillman, a highly paid, professional college football ANALYST has absolutely no clue what he is talking about, or
2. Ohio State is 100,000 time better than Spencer Tillman thinks.
Either way, this guy is an opinion maker and an analyst who is paid to analyze college football, and if he has no clue what is going on, how does anyone else?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRDGxhcQOrI
I’m no analyst, but I could have told you that Purdue’s offensive numbers came from not playing anyone. Ohio State still has not played anyone.
The craziest part of it all, instead of conceding that Purdue just sucks, Tillman will probably come to the analytical decision that Ohio State is a world beater because they shutdown Purdue…this is how it all starts…

57 – I spent the aftermath of the USC debacle hoping that UCLA would lose to arguably the worst major college team in the country just so I wouldn’t have to hear about the Stanford loss from my UCLA buddies. Unfortunately, this plan backfired on me as it seems that Koach Karl is finally going to be shown the door. No matter how I try, I can’t win this weekend.

When I left Dan’s body I took all of his playcalling skills with me.

You bunch of assholes says Sammie after hearing all the griping and jay and eric and whitlow still know that the SEC is the best even though we are faithful and jay and whitlow are too to Kansas and eric y reminds us that there is no one else like Peyton Manning and whitlow and sammie and jay watched the TN GA game yesterday and whitlow and jay were both equally glad that the dawgs got their asses beat and we all went up to Hutchinson this afternoon for ice cream at the Dairy Queen and whitlow says it’s about to storm up in Manhattan and jay says we better enjoy it because it won’t be long and whitlow says it will be blizzard time.

UCLA has made me sad. I used to be mad at Karl Dorrell, like when your kid accidentally crashes your car.
But now my kid is a meth-using, gun-toting, drunk-driving star of “To Catch a Pedophile.”
If there is any silver lining to this, it’s that he will finally be put out of his misery.
Also, it’s a good thing I don’t have kids.

#70, I agree.
Even though both losses were terrible for the conference, Stanford over SC was amazing/astounding/ridiculous. Notre Dame over UCLA was just…a heap of suck with sadness gravy garnished with a whole lot of sadness.

Well, lets be honest first off. UCLA is about 10x more talented than ND.
But when you pair Karl Dorrell with a walk on Freshman at QB…Oh man. You are in for one hell of a ride.
That QB’s final line…
12-28, 129 yards, 0 TD’s 4 INT’s
Wow.

@ J-$$$, if you read this, my e-mail crashed so I must respond in this manner. Yes, I will marry you. I know I am a Michigan fan, but true love knows no fight song….

Just finished listening to the segment with Verne-great stuff!! I’ve always licked him, but after hearing him on here I might be developing a man crush.
One of my favorite lines from Verne. “There are few truths in an uncertain world, but here’s one of them, this ain’t Kentucky.” That was his final words before Florida kicked off to Bama in Meyer’s first year.

The EDSBS-Florida- playwheel segment that Verne mentioned must be gotten up on Youtube immediately. Make it happen people.

tOSU,
Licked? Freudian slip or horribly frightening admission?

Amidst this chaos, I think we should take time to appreciate Clemson and Michigan State for their rock-solid dependability to tease and collapse, along with Georgia Tech’s consistent inconsistency. These are the only truths I have to cling to anymore.

tOSU,
so you lick first and then develop a man crush?

Dammit Irwin, we agreed you wouldn’t tell anyone about that behavior. I swear I’m gonna have that AOL crap disconnected.

Where has SKLM gone? I was hoping he could explain how is it possible that the BEST TEAM with the the BEST COACH and the BEST PLAYERS that money can buy lost to Stanford? KARMA, BABY, KARMA!!!

Karl Dorrell does not represent the Pac-10. Anyone who has watched UCLA under the KD regime could have told you it was laughable they were ranked #12 going into this season. Apparently everyone forgot they were 6-7 last year and got blown out (essentially) at home by, as mentioned, Jeff Bowden and FSU. He has always been in over his head and finally the UCLA administration may be seeing what has been obvious to everyone else for years

Am I the only person in the world who thought Glen Dorsey’s only significant play last Saturday night came after he cheap shotted the Florida tackle up under the facemask toward the end of the fourth quarter?

i think fans of the SEC get tired of seeing so called “the best” teams playing for national titles, if everybody remembers the poll of ‘06 who would win the Ohio & Florida Bowl majority of the country picked Ohio, well we all know the outcome of that. It’s time for a change. SEC all the way baby!!!
