OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
Three unbeaten top ten teams fall in a single Thermidorean day. We saw one of them get decapitated live, and it sucked with the sucking of a thousand burning suns of suck.

We'll discuss all the sucking on EDSBS Live at 7 p.m. EST Sunday night. But first...there's a lot of kittens in this bucket. And they all have to die.

Was it pathetic of me to be thinking “Wow, poor Peter…wow, poor Orson” during the bloodbaths today? Glad my boys managed to avoid the reaper for another week. However, this was a very very very bad day to be away from a TV almost all day long.

….it was the kind of day where, when the Hogs were up 45-7 at half, I thought ‘Give it to McFadden a couple more times, just in case. Today’s been crazy enough that a 39 unanswered point run could happen’

Thermidor!!! I love the French Revolution, here are my analogies!
Florida = Maximilien Robespierre: The establishment, returning champions, symbol of a revolution and a new paradigm, Shot in the jaw by Auburn and subjected to a botched but effective Guillotine on the last play of the game.
Oklahoma = Louis de Saint-Just: Fiery and young and making waves all over the place; the fastest rising member of the Committee for Public Safety that is the AP top 10. Didn’t see the upset coming, head lopped off in dramatic but effective fashion.
Texas = Georges Couthon: Respected elder statesmen but confined to a wheelchair by awful coaching. Plucked from his perch, plopped mercilessly on the gibbet and humiliated like the awful cripple he was by Ron Prince.

I thought the only interesting game would be Cal v. Oregon. . . . Accordingly, I made the obvious decision to NOT watch football today in anticipation of next week watching undefeated Texas play undefeated OU as well as undefeated LSU play undefeated Florida in what would be the best games of the season. . . . I think this decision is what many refer to as a (comical but nonetheless huge fucking) mistake.

Last time I checked, we have several scholarship running backs. Percy is amazing but it shouldn’t be a two man show. I thought this was the “spread” offense….spread it out.

Dear Diary,
My friends and I had left the bar Friday night in the 3rd quarter because watching your team turn the ball over 6 times is not the most pleasent thing to watch.
Waking up Saturday morning was tough. I avoided the final score of the WVU game as long as I could – I even skipped Game Day (went to the REI attic sale instead and got 2 pairs of shoes (super cute!!). It was to be a minamilist-football day, for I didn’t think I could handle watching the joy of others when I was feeling so blue. But then strange things began to happen. I started to play less Bioshock and watch more football as the night wore on. As the unthinkable began to unfold around the country……
And now, in the chilly light of this DC morning, things feel somewhat better. It’s as if a wee bit of optimism has creeped back into the fold…. for WVU was at least beaten by a ranked opponent.

Fantastic analogy on Texas but generally the French Revolution was an disaster which our Gaelic pals are stil living down – what is it the 5th Republic after how many restorations and empires?. This hold irrespective of the what one may think of the Ancien Regime and TJ’s enthusiasm.
Still, serves Urban Meyer right for trying to play the part of Louis Egalite by pushing for a playoff last year.

Also, payback is coming…. 1993, Boston College ruined what should have been ND’s second championship under Holtz (a week after ND knocked off #1 FSU)… BC will fall to the Irish.

Yes, the end result of Thermidor rebellion was a vacillating government called The Directorate under the guidance of Talleyrand and other who eventually allowed the rise of Napoleon and about 20 or so years of constant, bloody, devastating war.
So maybe this Thermidorean day is not great for college football, but it sure is fun to watch!!!!
I’m thinking that Dan Hawkins can be Napoleon (young and short); Tuberville be Talleyrand (Old and Shady); and Lloyd Carr or Jim Tressel will be Louis XVIII when they bring back the shaky rule of the traditional major programs.

And Perdue sucks bad! I watched the whole Irish/Perdue game and Perdue did everything possible to not dismantle the Irish and keep it “close.” (is 33-19 close?) Perdue should’ve won by about five touchdowns against ND’s defense, which is non-existant.

Give it a break already, Texas and OU were beaten by their own, WVU and Rutgers were beaten by their own, Oregon was beaten by its own, and if you want to count PSU as a ranked team they were beaten by their own. It doesn’t just happen in the SEC. USC has only lost 6 games in the last 5 years and I think 4 of them were to Pac-10 teams; does UCLA beating USC and knocking them out of the NC not qualify as a conference beating up on itself. It’s conference play, it’s not intramurals brother, quit making excuses.

Not rushing to judgment — this was building up last week, too. Tebow threw 27 passes and had 19 of UF 28 rushing attempts last night. Last week, he had 34 passes and 27 rushes. Against Tennesee, they spread it around more and played a great game. I don’t know why Meyer felt like he had to change the formula, but apparently he did.

Annual beatdown for Wisconsin or Ohio State?? Maybe I didn’t get the memo, but Wisconsin beat SEC West Champion last bowl season and has a couple of really nice wins over the SEC, and Ohio State’s only beatdown was by Florida last year. In case you’ve been asleep at the wheel, Ohio State is 4-1 in BCS bowls, which includes a 14-0 NC and 4 wins over conference champions, 2 of which were undefeated.

Most hilarious thing I’ve read thus far is some yahoo Bama saying “Welcome to the SEC Tebow.” Of course this is on the heels of Bama being badly beat by FSU (should have been 21-7) and in state rival upsetting UF. Truly pathetic.
Doesn’t Bama losing to a truly pathetic ACC team shed a little light on the SEC, or should we look at the Mizzu dismantling of Ole Miss and Oregon’s pummeling of Tennessee…Not that I am throwing stones, just wondering. I still think LSU has a chainsaw penis and there are several other very, very good teams in the SEC, including Kentucky.

Perhaps in an effort to fire up his team, Stoops can talk a certain Daily Oklahoman reporter into writing an article about how Sam Bradford’s mama feeds him chicken after games so he can go off on said writer during the post-game presser.

I don’t know if you noticed …. but Zook and Illinois are 4-1 (should have been 5-0, but for a cheap shot from a Mizzou player, knocking out our qb, but I digress).
Anyway, the next 3 … Wisconsin, at Iowa, Michigan, don’t look so bad.
So, if Florida sneaks into the SEC 2nd or 3rd slot, and assuming someone can beat the Zookster here on out … (maybe OSU. Maybe)…
Zook will be making his triumphant return to the state of Florida, marking the end of the Florida era (I’ve seen you guys play B10 in bowl games … except for conference usa refs throwing games, and that little game you had last year against osu…you’ve had trouble), and the beginning of the Illini era.

Shula’s been gone for 9 months, Saban cleaned house and brought in all new people – sent Joe Kines to a desk job in the admin office.
When are you people going to get it – Mark Dantonio, Will Muschamp, Jimbo Fisher, and a hot recruiting bed in Louisiana = Nick Saban’s career success.
Get a clue people, even I can see it. Mark Dantonio was the mastermind behind Ohio State’s 2002 defense and one of the main reasons we won the NC that year. He came up under Tressel at YSU and “worked” for Saban for 5 years at MSU. He already has them playing better at MSU. I would venture to say that Dantonio’s first year at MSU is looking better than Saban’s at Bama.

- (Artist) is this the Les Miles of the Big 10??? The SEC consistently beats each other’s brains out during the regular season, while the Big Te(eleve)n usually has one or two decent teams that look like world beaters against Northwestern and Iowa, then get killed by the “best of the best” – last year UF, this year USC. I’m only talking recent history here. OSU last season was just embarrassing against Florida and Michigan against USC was almost equally as embarrassing.
Speed kills – and the Big 10 just has none.
On any given Saturday in the SEC you can get “Croomed”, beaten to death by the Orgeron, matriculated by Vandy, or (is the world coming to an end) just plain beaten by (Red Foreman) Rich Brooks and Kentucky.

Nothing like basing an entire argument on a one year trend. Florida beat Ohio State – the best vs. the best. Not trying to argue otherwise. But since you are short on memory, here’s a little something to remind you of the last 10 years.
1997
Michigan wins NC
Tennessee gets killed by Nebraska
1998
Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin all tie for the Big Ten title and all three win their bowl games, beating 2 conference champions in the process. After 2 close scares (Syracuse and Arkansas, Tenn gets to the NC game and upsets FSU)
1999
Both the SEC champion and Runner-up lose bowl games Big Ten teams.
2000
Both the SEC champion and Runner-up lose bowl games 1 to a Big Ten team and 1 to an ACC team.
2001
LSU beats the weakest Big Ten team in years in a bowl game. All other Big Ten teams lose bowl games – down year for the Big Ten. LSU won the SEC with 3 conference losses that year – became the first team in the history of college football to win a conference with 3 losses.
2002
Ohio State wins the National Championship knocking of then unbeaten and defending nation champions Miami to cap off a 14-0 season. SEC runner-up loses to Minnesota who finished 3rd in the Big Ten.
That’s a nice little 5 year run for the Big Ten. 2 National Championships and beat the SEC champion and runner-up 3 times.

I (sort of) know how you feel, Orson. I was there live in the section at the 20 yard line watching Rutgers getting beat by a team who was doing it by playing similar to Rutgers (running through you, crucial passes, extended possessions).
My friend from Germany is leaving for LA before going home and he wanted to go to another college football game. We were amped for this game. Great seats, great day. And he was into this. Mind you, they don’t have college sports in Germany – and at everything else we went to, even Rutgers-Navy, he just sat in his seat and watched whereas I stood up and made noise and applauded and all that. But today, he was yelling, he was chanting – a guy who’s seen college football exactly once before yesterday. He was up for this one, but unfortunately the team sure as hell wasn’t. A crappy send off to witness such trash.
If you all want to get off the RU bandwagon, fine. My only solace is that the loss wasn’t against a Big East opponent and that maybe – maybe – Rutgers can now be the team we’ve seen before. I apologize for the venting, but I wanted to say that I agree – this weekend SUCKED.

Saban’s not building Rome, he’s cashing checks. He’ll be out of there in a couple of years once it settles in that he can’t get the quality and quantity of players he could in Louisiana. He’s already fed up with the classless, insane fans. I’m sure his wife loved him being tackled and kissed by a drunk female fan at the airport, and he’s already fed up with boosters calling his assistants in the middle of the night complaining about play calling. And just like everyone else in the country, he knows that the Bama fan base will turn on him like a rabid dog-just like they are turning on JPW.

Funny, formerly tOSU, your still pissed that OSU got blowed the fuck out in the biggest game of the year, and the sad part was Florida wasnt the best team last year from the SEC. They were the best coached team, but talent wise, LSU was the one with all the talent, just a sucky ass coach. In reality, LSU vs Fla last year do over should have been the real 1 vs 2, it would have been closer. What week is OSU gonna blow chunks this year? Before or during the BCS championship? The way this year is going, Michigan will beat yall just because they can just to fuck ya up. This is why the rankings shouldnt even start til Oct 15th, too many pretenders and not enough contenders.

In neither of those games were the aforementioned SEC teams faster.
In fact, going back the last 6 years, why don’t you check the won-loss record by the almighty SEC and Big Ten. Big Ten has the winning record, dudes. Get it through your beer guzzling, redneck heads,
The Big Ten has a winning record against the SEC the past 6 years in bowl games.

Stop it with your “facts”. Florida beating OSU clearly should count for 10 wins against the Big Ten. The SEC is better, that’s the only fact that matters.
OSU can go unbeaten, but I’m not sure they have the offense to take down LSU or USC. Wisconsin could go unbeaten, but their defense is more or less a sieve. Neither of them look like they have the firepower to beat USC or LSU.
But stranger things have happened.

I’m not an SEC homer, but looking at the number of MNC’s won by conference since 1990…
SEC 5, Big Ten 2.
Though it might also be worth noting that the Big 8/12 leads all in that span with 6 titles.
Yet the Big 12 never seems to come up in this discussion of conference supremacy.
by Smyth on Sep 30, 2007 3:46 PM EDT reply actions
See, that’s the SEC’s problem: people act like players from 1990 are still playing. This is college, not the NFL. You have a 4-5 year memory, and that’s all. Anything beyond that horizon is meaningless, since virtually none of the current players were around before that.
So no, MNC’s from the 90’s are not impressive.
by BeardGuy on Sep 30, 2007 3:49 PM EDT reply actions
Wisconsin defense is a sieve? Well, they are almost all back from last year, and they held that Arkansas offense everyone was raving about to 10 or 14 points.
And although Miami is not in the SEC, how many wins does OSU’s victory over a team that had won 250 games straight in the NC in 2002? 20 wins?

That seems about right. I’m well aware of what the numbers say, I’m just pointing out that when discussing current superiority, quoting statistics reflecting players and coaches no longer in the game is rather silly. For example, obviously Nebraska’s MNC wins in the 90’s have little bearing on how good Nebraska is now, but that’s effectively what people are saying in this thread.

a) The Big 12 has only been a conference for a decade and before that it was 2 separate conferences, so it’s a little harder to trace history, except for Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas who had a national rep before the 2 confererences merged.
b) The Big 12 has been percieved as down the last few years because the teams are beating up on each other. The only conference where teams have license to beat up on each other is the SEC, otherwise, it just hurts the perception of your league.
That’s not slamming the SEC, they are a tough conference and some of it’s rep is justified given the pro talent that comes out of that league. I’m talking about the way college football commentators in general think.
by R.D. Baker - Retired Blogger on Sep 30, 2007 6:08 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t really have any love or hate for the Big 12, but I think that the Big 12 really doesn’t get much love because of the 2 disastrous Oklahoma MNC appearances in the BCS in ‘03 and ’04 and Oklahoma’s defeat at the hands of Boise State last year.
Texas did manage to represent the Big 12 well in 2005, but I think most people assume that Texas in ’05 might have been a bit of an aberration. This aberration was caused by having a superstar player who played qb, running back, special teams and defense for them as well.
Since his departure, Texas and the Big 12 has been remarkably mediocre. This is evidenced by the fact that both Oklahoma and Texas have already lost to unranked teams less than one month into the season. And in the Texas K-State game, its not even clear that it was an upset, since the Longhorns lost by 20…………..at home.

Florida has more talent than Auburn yet they lost AT HOME. Does that mean Meyer is a sucky coach? LSU lost two games on the road. I love how SEC homers talk about how tough the SEC because of the huge number of hurdles it presents but then assume that having more talent AUTOMATICALLY means you win the whole thing or else your coach sucks.

I was in G-Vegas for the game and decided to count a few jorts during the tailgate. Rules: jorts for both men and women were counted. “Capri” style (ashamed that I am using this term) — below the knee and above the ankle — did NOT count as a true JORT. The following styles were observed:
Hemmed and Starched
Acid wash (yes really)
Hand made long, M and F
Hand made short and TIIIIght, M (uggh) and F
The pleated jort — a fan favorite
After an hour of intense observation I stopped counting at 115+. As a side note, Camo shorts were VERY popular. In fact, they made be the “Jort” of the new millenium.

Ya, Im pretty sure that counts as a win. Everyone mentions that PI call, but no one talks about the horrid call where Chris Gamble made a diving catch and they call him OB. Should the Correct call been made, OSU would have ran the clock out. Also, watch it again and watch the huge no-call clipping/block in the back on the long punt return that the U had to set up the score. I agree, the PI was a questionable call, but if not for the lack of refereeing in the 5 minutes before that, OSU would have kneed on the ball.

Let’s be objective here. The Big Ten Has been a top-heavy conference forever. So when tOSU and Michigan have a down year, then yes, the conference has a down year. But the extent to which the Big Ten has been bashed based on OSU and UM’s bowl blowouts last year is entirely unwarranted. OSU handled the same Washington team that gave a legitimate scare to USC. So a couple of traditional powerhouses got handled last year. It is time to get the fuck over it.

by NoleinTexas on Oct 1, 2007 7:39 AM EDT reply actions
I don’t really want to get into this argument, but I will. Bowl games are crappy ways to measure relative strength of conferences. That month off affects every team differently. Some come out arrogant and are surprised when the team they’re supposed to handle can actually play a little bit (see: UF over OSU, not the victory necessarily but the margin and WVU over UGA). Other teams get pissed at hearing about how badly they’re mismatched against the supposedly superior team. Some teams come off season-killing losses to close out the season and just go through the motions. And there’s always the interim coaches for teams in middling bowls. It’s all just an unpredictable mess in bowl season. I tend to think the SEC is better than the Big 10 most years (surprise since I’m a Georgia fan), but 2002 was a year where it clearly wasn’t. Mediocre 9-3 Arkansas played UGA in the SEC title game, and nobody but Georgia in the east was better than 8-4. The year before saw Illinois win the Big 10 title. I think that says everything about how down the Big 10 was that year. 2003 was a wash in my opinion despite the SEC being home to the national champ. The Big 10 had good depth that year. Since then I’d say the SEC has been better every year, i.e. deeper.

I agree, bowl games are not a good gauge of conference depth; they are only good for gauging who came to play on a certain day. I prefer regular season OOC games a better gauge.
Instead of these bogus cupcake games, I would like to see the BCS conferences lock horns the first two games of the season before starting conference play. Ohio State is doing it’s part by scheduling home and home series with USC, Miami(FL), VT, Cal, and OU over the next 10 years. But there is still room for 2 more cupcakes on the schedule and I would love to see them play a mid tier BCS conference foe instead of a MAC team.

I’m sure I’m not treading any ground that the Gator fans haven’t already, but I will note that when a Midwest dude like me — who gets to see at most a quarter or two of SEC football every couple of weeks — can watch Saturday night’s game from my sofa and predict when the Tebow QB shotgun draw is coming, well, one must assume that an opposing SEC defensive coordinator knows it’s coming, as well.
I know everyone in Gainesville is aroused by Mr. Tebow, and I understand that play worked pretty much every time they ran it last year. But eventually, even good teams get good plays scouted up. And it certainly looks like the scouting has caught up with that play.
