Accordingly, I made the obvious decision to NOT watch football today in anticipation of next week watching undefeated Texas play undefeated OU as well as undefeated LSU play undefeated Florida in what would be the best games of the season. . . . I think this decision is what many refer to as a (comical but nonetheless huge fucking) mistake.

My friends and I had left the bar Friday night in the 3rd quarter because watching your team turn the ball over 6 times is not the most pleasent thing to watch.

Waking up Saturday morning was tough. I avoided the final score of the WVU game as long as I could – I even skipped Game Day (went to the REI attic sale instead and got 2 pairs of shoes (super cute!!). It was to be a minamilist-football day, for I didn’t think I could handle watching the joy of others when I was feeling so blue. But then strange things began to happen. I started to play less Bioshock and watch more football as the night wore on. As the unthinkable began to unfold around the country……

And now, in the chilly light of this DC morning, things feel somewhat better. It’s as if a wee bit of optimism has creeped back into the fold…. for WVU was at least beaten by a ranked opponent.

Give it a break already, Texas and OU were beaten by their own, WVU and Rutgers were beaten by their own, Oregon was beaten by its own, and if you want to count PSU as a ranked team they were beaten by their own. It doesn’t just happen in the SEC. USC has only lost 6 games in the last 5 years and I think 4 of them were to Pac-10 teams; does UCLA beating USC and knocking them out of the NC not qualify as a conference beating up on itself. It’s conference play, it’s not intramurals brother, quit making excuses.

Not rushing to judgment — this was building up last week, too. Tebow threw 27 passes and had 19 of UF 28 rushing attempts last night. Last week, he had 34 passes and 27 rushes. Against Tennesee, they spread it around more and played a great game. I don’t know why Meyer felt like he had to change the formula, but apparently he did.

Annual beatdown for Wisconsin or Ohio State?? Maybe I didn’t get the memo, but Wisconsin beat SEC West Champion last bowl season and has a couple of really nice wins over the SEC, and Ohio State’s only beatdown was by Florida last year. In case you’ve been asleep at the wheel, Ohio State is 4-1 in BCS bowls, which includes a 14-0 NC and 4 wins over conference champions, 2 of which were undefeated.

The SEC consistently beats each other’s brains out during the regular season, while the Big Te(eleve)n usually has one or two decent teams that look like world beaters against Northwestern and Iowa, then get killed by the “best of the best” – last year UF, this year USC. I’m only talking recent history here. OSU last season was just embarrassing against Florida and Michigan against USC was almost equally as embarrassing.

On any given Saturday in the SEC you can get “Croomed”, beaten to death by the Orgeron, matriculated by Vandy, or (is the world coming to an end) just plain beaten by (Red Foreman) Rich Brooks and Kentucky.

But today, he was yelling, he was chanting – a guy who’s seen college football exactly once before yesterday. He was up for this one, but unfortunately the team sure as hell wasn’t. A crappy send off to witness such trash.

If you all want to get off the RU bandwagon, fine. My only solace is that the loss wasn’t against a Big East opponent and that maybe – maybe – Rutgers can now be the team we’ve seen before. I apologize for the venting, but I wanted to say that I agree – this weekend SUCKED.

OSU can go unbeaten, but I’m not sure they have the offense to take down LSU or USC. Wisconsin could go unbeaten, but their defense is more or less a sieve. Neither of them look like they have the firepower to beat USC or LSU.

The way I see it, WVU lost on the road (without their QB) to a ranked team USF team that beat Auburn on the road, while UF lost at home to a team unranked and beaten by aforementioned USF or whatever we call them nowadays…

See, that’s the SEC’s problem: people act like players from 1990 are still playing. This is college, not the NFL. You have a 4-5 year memory, and that’s all. Anything beyond that horizon is meaningless, since virtually none of the current players were around before that.

So no, MNC’s from the 90’s are not impressive.

I’m well aware of what the numbers say, I’m just pointing out that when discussing current superiority, quoting statistics reflecting players and coaches no longer in the game is rather silly. For example, obviously Nebraska’s MNC wins in the 90’s have little bearing on how good Nebraska is now, but that’s effectively what people are saying in this thread.

a) The Big 12 has only been a conference for a decade and before that it was 2 separate conferences, so it’s a little harder to trace history, except for Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas who had a national rep before the 2 confererences merged.

b) The Big 12 has been percieved as down the last few years because the teams are beating up on each other. The only conference where teams have license to beat up on each other is the SEC, otherwise, it just hurts the perception of your league.

That’s not slamming the SEC, they are a tough conference and some of it’s rep is justified given the pro talent that comes out of that league. I’m talking about the way college football commentators in general think.

I don’t really have any love or hate for the Big 12, but I think that the Big 12 really doesn’t get much love because of the 2 disastrous Oklahoma MNC appearances in the BCS in ‘03 and ’04 and Oklahoma’s defeat at the hands of Boise State last year.

Texas did manage to represent the Big 12 well in 2005, but I think most people assume that Texas in ’05 might have been a bit of an aberration. This aberration was caused by having a superstar player who played qb, running back, special teams and defense for them as well.

Since his departure, Texas and the Big 12 has been remarkably mediocre. This is evidenced by the fact that both Oklahoma and Texas have already lost to unranked teams less than one month into the season. And in the Texas K-State game, its not even clear that it was an upset, since the Longhorns lost by 20…………..at home.

I was in G-Vegas for the game and decided to count a few jorts during the tailgate. Rules: jorts for both men and women were counted. “Capri” style (ashamed that I am using this term) — below the knee and above the ankle — did NOT count as a true JORT. The following styles were observed:

Ya, Im pretty sure that counts as a win. Everyone mentions that PI call, but no one talks about the horrid call where Chris Gamble made a diving catch and they call him OB. Should the Correct call been made, OSU would have ran the clock out. Also, watch it again and watch the huge no-call clipping/block in the back on the long punt return that the U had to set up the score. I agree, the PI was a questionable call, but if not for the lack of refereeing in the 5 minutes before that, OSU would have kneed on the ball.

Let’s be objective here. The Big Ten Has been a top-heavy conference forever. So when tOSU and Michigan have a down year, then yes, the conference has a down year. But the extent to which the Big Ten has been bashed based on OSU and UM’s bowl blowouts last year is entirely unwarranted. OSU handled the same Washington team that gave a legitimate scare to USC. So a couple of traditional powerhouses got handled last year. It is time to get the fuck over it.

I don’t have a dog in this fight (topical!) but OSU didn’t even play the co-champion of the Big 10 in 2002, so….yeah.

I don’t really want to get into this argument, but I will. Bowl games are crappy ways to measure relative strength of conferences. That month off affects every team differently. Some come out arrogant and are surprised when the team they’re supposed to handle can actually play a little bit (see: UF over OSU, not the victory necessarily but the margin and WVU over UGA). Other teams get pissed at hearing about how badly they’re mismatched against the supposedly superior team. Some teams come off season-killing losses to close out the season and just go through the motions. And there’s always the interim coaches for teams in middling bowls. It’s all just an unpredictable mess in bowl season. I tend to think the SEC is better than the Big 10 most years (surprise since I’m a Georgia fan), but 2002 was a year where it clearly wasn’t. Mediocre 9-3 Arkansas played UGA in the SEC title game, and nobody but Georgia in the east was better than 8-4. The year before saw Illinois win the Big 10 title. I think that says everything about how down the Big 10 was that year. 2003 was a wash in my opinion despite the SEC being home to the national champ. The Big 10 had good depth that year. Since then I’d say the SEC has been better every year, i.e. deeper.

I agree, bowl games are not a good gauge of conference depth; they are only good for gauging who came to play on a certain day. I prefer regular season OOC games a better gauge.

Instead of these bogus cupcake games, I would like to see the BCS conferences lock horns the first two games of the season before starting conference play. Ohio State is doing it’s part by scheduling home and home series with USC, Miami(FL), VT, Cal, and OU over the next 10 years. But there is still room for 2 more cupcakes on the schedule and I would love to see them play a mid tier BCS conference foe instead of a MAC team.

Yeah, Georgia’s trying to schedule more BCS OOC games. Unfortunately only the middling Big 12 schools have worked out so far (Col and the other OSU). Michigan didn’t work out. I wouldn’t mind a little home and home Georgia-Ohio State action or Georgia-Oregon. I think Oregon State comes on the schedule sometime in the next few years.

I’m sure I’m not treading any ground that the Gator fans haven’t already, but I will note that when a Midwest dude like me — who gets to see at most a quarter or two of SEC football every couple of weeks — can watch Saturday night’s game from my sofa and predict when the Tebow QB shotgun draw is coming, well, one must assume that an opposing SEC defensive coordinator knows it’s coming, as well.

I know everyone in Gainesville is aroused by Mr. Tebow, and I understand that play worked pretty much every time they ran it last year. But eventually, even good teams get good plays scouted up. And it certainly looks like the scouting has caught up with that play.
