Leaving for Happy Valley momentarily with homebrew (“Charlie HeavyWeissen”, if you must know) and malevolence in tow, game starts in 10 hours. I expect nothing but sweet, sweet destruction of Speedo McLimpwrist tonight.
I don’t see how VT hangs with LSU. Interested to see how good Oklahoma’s offense really is. I’d mention Bama/Vandy, but I don’t have time blah blah blah. I’m kind of expecting Michigan to remain in the tank. It’s one thing to suffer soul crushing loss to a nobody program, entirely another to try and salvage the season with a lame duck coach.
Upset Alert has been raised to Orange for BYU @ UCLA (-7.5). I wouldn’t even be shocked to see FIU get over on Maryland if they manage to not turn the ball over elevendy times in the first half like they did against PSU.

2. Spurrier using Corso to raise money for USC
3. Miss Teen USA using her epic embarrassment to further her “career” on Gameday
4. Rivalry games in week 2 (Coal Bowl)
5. Teams that refuse to play cupcakes
6. Going for it on 4th down (Wake)
7. The collapse of the Miami football program
8. Not having to hear about SC today
9. The collapse of the Notre Dame football program
10. The potential for an epic upset by USF
11. Akron 2, Ohio St. 0.

My sister graduated from UF’s Law school (with certain deviations that include FSU and Ole Miss, but let’s not talk about that). When it was time for me to decide where to get my degree I chose UGA. What the hell is wrong with me. My mammy has season tickets to UF games…I grew up going to them…..I went to Georgia…I have serious problems. At least the Pac-10 will silence some doubters for about three hours until everybody forgets and I get to read more asshattery.
For everyone’s convenience, just stick these general talking points together to save you some time on your inaccurate Pac-10 thoughts.
1. The Pac-10 doesn’t play defense.
2. The Pac-10 can’t run the ball.
3. The Pac-10 has crappy special teams.
4. The Pac-10 is just [PICK TWO: USC, UCLA, CAL] and a bunch of nobodies.
5. The Pac-10 doesn’t play anybody.
6. The Pac-10 is soft.
7. The Pac-10 doesn’t even have very good passing offenses; they’re just matched against terrible defenses.

58:
The Pac-10 plays less defense than the SEC or ACC, and about the same level as the Big Ten and Big XII. Also, it’s generally pretty correct to say that the Pac-10 is USC, generic BCS contender number 2, and a good bet to win one of the middle/major bowl games. It looks like they’re having a stronger than average year this year.
I think Florida made the very real point against Ohio State last year about the kind of defense that gets played in the SEC and, to a lesser or greater extent depending on the year, the ACC. It’s a hell of a lot tougher than any other conference.
by GTSteve on Sep 8, 2007 8:26 PM EDT reply actions
Yes, it’s definitely reasonable to look at one data point to the exclusion of all others. That’s a good solid way of doing things. When in doubt, just state your opinions as fact; that’s good too. I very much approve, and I’m glad I could give you a head start.

Oh, don’t forget:
8. The Pac-10 has had nine conference champions* or co-champions in the last eleven years. However, the SEC is the conference in which teams fight tooth and nail to beat other schools seen by outsiders as mediocre.

After two games it is evident….Our offense is sharp on execution and the playbook, we got the talent…but I would say our biggest problem is lack of experience. Oklahoma gets the nod today boys, but LSU is scary.
Naturally Bama fans will claim three victories today, 1 against Vandy, 2 because Saban is the only reason LSU is even a school, and 3 because the mere arrival of Saban has made Auburn start to suck and drop OOC games to unranked teams that have only been playing football for 10 years.
What’s really going to be funny to watch is how Bama fans and Nick Saban are going to take credit for beating themselves when LSU kills them – Nick Saban is soo good that he is the only coach who can build a program so deep and so fast that only that program can beat him…and I am dead serious, Bama fans will find a way to glorify Saban and still give him credit if he loses to LSU.
Nebraska will get drilled by USC.
Penn State looked pretty good – JoePa has turned things back around – nice bowl win last year and nice start to this season.
My Buckeyes need to take better care of the ball – we’re young, playing more freshmen this year than I can ever remember playing in the past. The defense is okay, but the O-Line is an issue and a serious one.
20-2 doesn’t look or sound good, but if you said 68 total yards of offense for the Zips and 16 straight 3 and out series, 20-2 doesn’t sound sooo bad. Granted it’s Akron.

Oh yeh by the way, Lloyd Carr will never sleep again with the Ghost Of Bo haunting him til Lloyds hair turns white. He will not be able to get the sounds of screamin kittys and snapping necks out of his head, or the call of App States color commentators, and the site of the disappointingly common appearance of Oregons plain jane uniforms as they were throttled like a boat race by Phil Nike’s version of Stormtroopers at the Big House of Horrors, Maized and Confused. I think we would forgive Lloyd Carr if he went out like Janis or Jimmy Hendrix and just started main lining smack and smoking an 8 ball a day til his heart exploded. Or this ends up on You Tube, with him, a gun, a room, close the door, and a single shot rings out with the muzzle flash lighting up the night then a muffled thud.
Then 2 mins later they offer Les Miles 8,000,001.99 to come to Michigan’s Not So Vicious Wolverines now, in advance in guaranteed money to beat Sabans current contract by 1.99 so the Big Hat can come home to the Big House.

Let’s go to the scoreboard kids.
Wins (against BCS or ranked) – Losses (BCS or not)
Big East 3-1
Pac10 5-2
SEC 3-2
Big12 6-4
Big10 0-4
ACC 0-5
Big East / Pac10 a wash with Cincy>OSU and Wash>Syr.
Big East>SEC reinforced by USF>Auburn
Pac10>SEC reinforced by Cal>Tenn
SEC>Big12 reinforced by UGa>OSU and Auburn > KSU
Big12 has three wins over Big10 / ACC
Big10 has losses to Pac10, Big12, MAC, and the FCSfkaI-AA
ACC has losses to BigEast, SEC, Big12, and C-USA
And a few predictions:
1) it will work out about the same in the bowls.
2) all Big East and non-USC Pac10 wins will be dismissed as flukes.
3) 2008 preseason polls will look roughly like they did in 1980.

Big12: 12-9, .57
Big10: 8-8, .50
SEC: 9-10, .47
ACC: 9-12, .43
Very hard to argue that the Pac10 and BigEast have not been underrated.

Auburn fans are excitable because (as an Auburn fan at the game who was in the stands) I have never seen a finer performance by an Auburn defense. The offense is in trouble.
Seriously, walking back to the car I felt bad for Cox because the only person less welcome on Auburn’s campus is probablly Robert McGinty.
Reference for Robert McGinty for Auburn and Gator fans under 27 or so.

That sumbitch can stay gone. Serioulsy though about Cox, if he’s healthy enough to play I’m tired of hearing how banged up he is. If he isn’t healthy enough to play, he or the coaches should take him out before he does long term damage.
Good fans cheer loud when their team is good and louder when their offense is lousy and their defense is manning up. Obnoxious my ass.

I think doubts about the Big East will justifiably persist until the marquee teams (ie, WV and L’ville) prove that they have actual defenses – the early returns can only remind people of the defensive comedy of errors in their showdown last year.

Honestly, in all my years as a fan, I have never seen a beating like the one I witnessed last night. Most impressive game I’ve seen LSU play. Offensive explosion (598 yards) and a stifling, dominant defense (167 yards) the likes of which I haven’t seen in the same game for the Tigers against a decent foe.
And nothing personal, but it has to suck to be a Dawg fan. Same coach, different school, same result, click, clack. Spurrier probably sleeps with a smile on his face. Now I have to go get all nervous about him and USC.
Top three right now is:
LSU
Oklahoma
USC
Next three are
Penn St.
Wisconsin
Cal/Washington/UCLA
Washington continues to impress. We’ll see if that schedule wears them down though.

#100… spot on about Bama fans.
What the Tuscalosers don’t want to acknowledge is that Saban’s recruiting genius amounts to- having kept the majority of Louisiana kids in Louisiana & poaching a kid here & there from another state, just like everybody else.
But then again they also don’t want to admit he left East Lansing b/c he couldn’t out-recruit Michigan & said as much when he came to LSU but hey, what’s a little historical fact to get in the way of a Bama delusion or 12.

Or better yet, Statprof, USC’s 50-42 win over Fresno a couple years ago in what was arguably the greatest game ever.
119, “winning with other coach’s players” is the single dumbest idea ever to leak out of somebody else’s mouth in the sportsworld. I don’t recall Saban being at & running practices nor do I recall him in the film room preparing gameplans nor do I recall him on the sidelines calling the plays in the last 3 years.
Anyone who regurgitates that ideology is using the most simplistic logic imaginable b/c if it was that simple, why do they even practice or watch films at all? Or better yet how did Saban win anything with Di Nardo’s players?
by One And Done on Sep 9, 2007 12:39 PM EDT reply actions
Those were Arena League scores, all of them – you won’t hear me say the OSU-UM or USC-UT were great games, and I can hardly be held responsible for what the talking heads on TV say, no? And let’s not get distracted from the point here, which is that WVU and UL had mediocre defenses last year, and they’ve looked much worse so far this year. Are you really going to argue that UL-MTSU was “an offensive showcase?”

Just for the record, Saban said it himself, paraphrasing of course, “Well you see what LSU did to ND in the Sugar bowl, we recruited most of those players and they were part of what we were building there.”
Bammers bought it hook line and sinker. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a Bama fan say, “man look at LSU, those are Saban’s players, that will be us in a year maybe two.”
Note to self, didn’t Saban’s version of LSU get killed by VT? Didn’t Saban’s version of LSU get beat by UAB? Didn’t Saban’s version of LSU have their asses handed to them 12 times by double-digits, two of which were 30 point losses?
This is Miles’ team, his coaches, his schemes, his LSU. Saban can go f-himself along with the Bama nation.
I’m out, I have a cooler to go clean for the trip to Washington, I heard the scenic view is nice but the bathrooms suck.
Oh, and thanks Michigan, thanks for being the boat anchor thus far this year.
by osu buckeyes on Sep 9, 2007 12:53 PM EDT reply actions
Speaking of Saban…I bet he’s kicking himself right now…just think about it for a second. He’s made 2 terrible career decisions both based on money.
1. to leave LSU for more $$$,
2. to leave Miami for more $$$(long term).
Had he at least done the right thing and toughed it out at Miami for one more year, he could have been in the perfect position to go back to LSU. Of course he didn’t know Carr would tank and Miles would go to Michigan (which we all know is going to happen now), but had he done the right thing he probably would have been able to go back to LSU.
Instead he is stuck in college football hell, where his every word is over-analyzed, he has a bunch of rebuilding to do, if he doesn’t win right away they will run his ass off, and there is a very good chance that his career goes down the tubes if he fails at Bama, which is a little more likely to happen than people think. This is not 1970, there are not unlimited scholarships, Bama has been exposed as one of the cheating-est programs in the country and is being watched very closely, the SEC is tougher than ever, and on and on. It is almost inevitable.

You seem to be an expert on Saban, Bama and all things SEC yet you apparently cheer for a craptastic Big 10 team. I wouldn’t be surpised by such bs being spouted by LSU fans (who could care less about Saban or Bama given the team they have this year) but an OSU fan? What gives?
And 100+ cocktails to LSU…best team in the nation by far. I would not be at all suprised if they give up less than 100 points total all season including SEC championship and BCS title game (14 games total). As long as they don’t totally screw up (like the conservative play-calling at Auburn last year) there is no one who can beat them…
And they might be better next year when Miles goes to Michigan and Bo Pelini takes over the team…

Like I tell everyone else who doesn’t live in Alabama, you have no idea what it’s like and what the people are like, namely Bama fans. I came to Alabama with an open mind and very little knowledge of the people or the culture; after the initial culture shock wore off I was able to see it for what it is. Hence my distastes for all things Bama. Saban on the other hand is just an arrogant jerk who treats people like dirt – which is why no one would leave Mich State and why it took him so long to put a staff together at Bama.
It’s not rocket science and it’s not jilted love – it’s just the result of an outsider living in Alabama and being able to see things from a different perspective.

tOSUBuckeyes, are you and osu buckeyes one and the same? you both share a hatred of Bama that even Auburn fans would think is excessive.
and statprof, don’t you think it’s a little early in the season to pull out records vs. ranked teams and records vs. spread? both early season rankings and point spreads are notoriously inexact.
for example, in 2005, we (UF) beat then 3rd ranked Tennessee, who only ended up with 5 wins that season. It didn’t mean we were better than all but 2 teams, it just meant the early season rankings (on which you’re relying) were wrong.

An overall view of college football(mainly SEC)
LSU is a great team right now. We’ll see if they can keep it moving when Miles leaves them at the end of the year. I’m predicting they’ll still probably be pretty good for a while
Alabama will be a good team. Not because ‘look at LSU players, that will be us’. Simply because it’s Alabama and it’s the hot thing right now. Honest question: Is or isn’t Saban killing in recruiting right now? Alabama will win probably 8-9 games this year(with the bowl win) and they’ll pull in several big name recruits and be one of the good teams in the SEC in a couple of years. I’m sorry, thats just how it is.
Florida will be good for years…goes without saying
Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas are all pretty much done. I mean, Tennessee will get their recruits, but they are going to be a mediocre team and the other two are about to take a MAJOR step back.
Georgia will be a good team.
I pretty much expect everyone else to remain where they’re at…except for South Carolina who will be a good SEC team until Spurrier retires in a few years.

OC- I am not bitter. I was merely at the game and have the capability to recognize what was happening. Neither one of those teams is looking at winning the SEC currently. If South Carolina O and SOS are all that then why couldn’t they score more than one TD on an average, inexperienced D that never bothered to blitz? Do you think LSU will offer SC the same courtesy? But I can understand the desperate need for validation of one’s teams. If UGA beat UF similarly, I would still be very happy regardless.
by Meg on Sep 9, 2007 7:01 PM EDT reply actions
UGA beating Florida is a rarity among rarities. SC over UGA… rare, but not nearly as rare.
I wasn’t validating our O, not at all. Only putting up 28 against RCR’s Cajun’s should tell you that. We got beat at the line of scrimmage more than we wanted (but a shitload less than what we expected). Not one single UGA fan called their D average or inexperienced going into that matchup – don’t start with that shit now. No, I don’t expect either team to have a decisive lead in the East race by playing like our O did last night. Our receivers couldn’t get separation, credit your D.
You’re right – we don’t expect LSU will be as friendly to as as your team was. I’d like to win that, but covering the spread would be nice as well.

The PSU ND game was good for me from the perspective that PSU won, but my god Morelli looked like the second coming of Zach Mills. Happy feet, throwing it at the line, not looking off defenders. After the first long attempt was intercepted they didn’t go deep the rest of the way. The defense on the other hand looked sick sick sick. Only offensive points came after a punt return to the 7. On the other hand Clausen actually looked pretty poised and showed good mobility so he probably has a good future if he can keep from getting decapitated.
