Dropped Out:

Notes. Clarifications. Horrid misjudgments.

Slaves to fashion. And reason, mind you: Michigan drops out completely and totally. They've surrendered to their fate for the moment, Space Emperor Zoltan and all.

Play someone, you get preference. Unless you're USC and Florida. Who both may be horribly overrated in this poll, along with West Virginia. Yet we did the best we could to balance the prejudice of past success (Florida, USC) and hype (WVU and Louisville) with actually playing someone in week one. Cal receives the biggest bump, though their defense shows ominous generosity, for playing a frisky Tennessee team. Tennessee acquitted themselves well, so thus do not fall too far in the polls, either.

T. Boone only flies invisible platinum jets flown by Linda Carter. Even to road losses.

Ditto for Georgia, who didn't get enough general huzzah-ing for their tidy disposal of Oklahoma State and the invisible platinum plane they flew in on piloted by D.B. Cooper and Wonder Woman. (T. Boone pays for nothing but the best.) Georgia Tech gets moderate huzzah-ing for playing in a potentially tough venue, though Notre Dame may be worse than anyone, anyone anticipated. While we're covering our SEC homerism here, Auburn--who we had unranked--sneaks in the 20s for playing an erratic but potentially good Kansas State team.

The Aigggh's of Texas are upon us. A 21-13 game against Arkansas State should send jitters through the voting populace. The linebackers really are a problem, and the one bailout factor Texas has relied on for the past two years, the unstoppable power spread they've been running since VY year two, stuttered with Colt McCoy mistakes. Rust or deep decay will be diagnosed over the next three weeks.

Honoraria, impending fluctuation, and hat tips. At this point in the season, build no foundations in a poll--the ground is practically liquid, as Michigan so aptly (or ineptly) demonstrated. So no griping about big swings, since we're happy to be Mr. Manic Depressive at this point in the year.

Fluctuation will reign in the bottom half of the poll, too: Washington gets the nod for the new-look offense and the auspicious debut of Jake Locker (huge offensive line, too), Colorado played extremely well in a perpetually underrated rivalry game against CSU, and Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Hawaii, and Nebraska all get bumps of varying degree for laying waste to opponents and the cities they once called home, but may now carry in a small ziploc baggie. Again, events of this week have made the gimme games and the blowouts they spawn seem slightly more significant, since losing is now an evident option.

Orson,

Granted you may not have seen any of this yet, but the Rutgers defense is as good as last year (which was top-10 nationally), the offensive line and Ray Rice are at least as good as last year, and the passing game is even better. I understand we don’t play anyone, but to not even slot RU in the 20-25 range is a little off, no? Particularly given how we stacked up against two of your top 11 teams last year.

by Dave K. on Sep 5, 2007 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

the tobacco road con man may want to re-evaluate running that spread read option (or whatever the fuck it is) when your starting qb is not even a remote threat to run. it’s like nebraska running the west coast with option players. and that longhorn secondary is teeerrrrible.

I suspect Florida, Virginia Tech and probably LSU are too high, but it’s all a crapshoot at this point.

Texas looked awful. NO running game, desptie having a badass running back. No pass defense. Shoddy linebacker play (HOW!?! with these recruits?!!)

Texas hasn’t gotten back to defensive form since Chizickian left, and needs to go back to a traditional non-“let’s-force-the-option-read-without-VY” -running game out of the I-form or something. Oklahoma will rape our horses and ride off on our women.

LSU v. Vtech is a great steak-and-potatoes game this weekend. We’ll learn alot about the Tigres.

My prediction is that auburn will fall on its face, soon. Sundaymorningqb asserts as much, as eventually life on the margins will catch up with their NEVER ENDING LUCKFEST.

I know Oklahoma destroyed North Texas Sisters of The Poor, but three? Really? But, maybe I have some residual hate left over from junior year of high school when a hot chick from Okla turned me down.

No, I still think they’re overrated.

Whoa, whoaaa. #12 for Georgia Tech, we beat a team no better than UNC here people. Let’s not get crazy. I like our national #21 ranking. Gives us a chance to climb up a slot or two every week and end up top 5 perhaps while not having people putting a bullseye on us.

I don’t care how bad the rest of the damn team is, at least rank Humanity Advanced and Robin above Colorado… not even the Penis brothers should make them rank below a middling Big-13 school

Orson,

While I’m not advocating a Top 15 ranking or anything, I’m slightly confused as to the total dropping of my Fightin’ McFaddens from the rankings.C’mon – you know you want him in there between #17 and #25.

by Jerkwheat on Sep 5, 2007 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

1) Rocky Mountain Showdown is a very underrated rivalry game, and unlike other rivalries, its always a good game (been decided by four point or less in the last four seasons, 3 times on the last play from scrimmage)
2) That being said, CU probably doesn’t deserve to slip into the rankings because of that victory
3) They need to stop playing that game at 10 in the morning. Being drunk 3 seperate times in 24 hours isnt as fun as it sounds
4) Good job not ranking Rutgers. Very overrated, not very good.
5) CU IS better than the teams ranked 22-24.

by babaoje on Sep 5, 2007 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

va tech and missouri are too hight. colorado also. rutgers and arkansas should be on there. also, kyle jackson just missed a tackle.

by adam b on Sep 5, 2007 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

Also Hawaii shouldn’t be ranked either. They beat the “other” team from Colorado, you know the one where the players stab eachother. Ya, that one.

by babaoje on Sep 5, 2007 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

+1 to #8 & #17.

McFadden alone should be about #22-25. So you’re saying the rest of the team subtracts from him?

by mambajack on Sep 5, 2007 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Missouri? Missouri? The team that is constantly picked to “finally get over the hump this year” but always loses 3-4 games? That Barely beat a [Name Redacted} coached team, which is like starting out the game with a 16 point lead.

Yah, I’m not sure that getting within a TD in the 4th quarter, then losing by 2 TD’s (should have been 3) constitutes “acquitted themselves well”, whatever that means. But kudos for giving Cal the proper position in the poll, ahead of a poor performing VaTech, which apparently the national pollsters were incapable of figuring out.

So does that mean that FSU “acquitted themselves well” because they got it to within 6 in the 4th quarter?

Incidentally, the funniest thing on message boards right now are the moral victories by FSU fans. They somehow take solace in the second half against Clemson, when during their run in the 90’s, such rationalization would be unheard of.

And I must have missed where UCLA was in that poll……mmmm? Or does losing by 2 TD’s to Cal get more respect than blowing out the fighting Harbaughs?

Where is UCONN?!?! Duke was 25th last week and we smoked ‘em by 31. I’m going to keep writing this so everyone knows…UConn is beating Pitt on 9/22….and will be undefeated when it plays Louisville in October. Just make a mental note. Because UConn’s schedule sucks.

Seriously…judging from week 1, I think West Virginia is in the national title game. I know they can’t play defense and I don’t think it matters. They remind me of the 1998 UCLA team that liked to win games 45-42 and refused to play a lick of defense. Except West Virginia’s offense is better than that. Might be the best offense ever. You cannot stop them. Don’t even try. Just put them in New Orleans right now and let’s see LSU, Florida or USC try.

I think WV already proved what it can do to an SEC defense – run right the fuck through it as it did against Georgia…They were up 28-0 before Georgia realized what was going on…credit Georgia though, they made a come back.

by Iostcause on Sep 5, 2007 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Rutgers… out?? What?

McFadden and Felix Jones… OUT?! WHAT THE FUCK?!

Obviously, their QB sucks and their team isn’t that great, but Dave Chappelle and Humanity Advanced alone can beat teams like Colorado and Missouri, just by returning the opening kickoff back, Chase Daniel and the Hawkins Whisperer’s heads will collectively explode, rendering each team utterly useless.

by Stephen Colboar on Sep 5, 2007 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

Speaking as an A&M fan, we are routinely overrated in polls and this one appears to be no exception. We will undoubtedly lose to Tech…again. Agree with some commenters that Texas looked pretty bad, especially at linebacker. Is it Tech’s year? Yarrr?

  1. I think this has been covered before but just in case:

University of Southern California, founded 1880

South Carolina College, founded 1801 (very nice), rebranded as the University of South Carolina 1906.

Timeline indeed.

by DC Trojan on Sep 5, 2007 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Hey Hack,

When people think USC, they think University of Southern Califonia. It’s the real USC.

FWIW, SCC founded 1801. USC founded 1880. SCC renamed University of South Carolina in 1906.

You lose the timeline by 35 years or so…

Besides, that’s akin to saying when college football fans see/say FSU, they are actually thinking Fresno State?

You have no argument.

The “real” UT or “real” OSU arguments have better merit.
