Here is Coach Carr’s halftime speech, it almost worked….
LC: Come on guys, THIS IS DIVISION ONE FOOTBALL!!!!
Some flunky: Uh coach, App State is not a division one team.
LC: No shit!?!? Damn…. THIS IS DIVISION TWO FOOTBALL!!!!
Same flunky: Coach, App State is not division two either, they are FCS.
LC: ….. (flunky melts from stare)
LC: This is FSC… FCS… fuck it! go play intramurals brother, go play intramurals. In the B leage too, you’re not ready for A.

The reactions to the score updates at Beaver Stadium were high-larious (FIU was decidedly COLD COLD COLD, and exactly how Orson predicted a few days ago in the cupcake posts). It was all rather cute and entertaining until ASU opened up a two-touchdown lead. That’s when the “holy shit, this might actually happen!” sentiment came in, along with the “we’ve lost eight consecutive games to Michigan, and these assholes are going to beat them?” sentiment. The stadium PA announcer kept saving the Michigan score until the end of every update, too. It was all so surreal.
Anyway, this Michigan loss is so sweet in so many ways, but from a practical standpoint it really hurts anyone hoping to build their eventual resume by beating Michigan. Not that Penn State would ever beat Michigan.

I think I’m going to go throw up. Forget embarrassing a school. I feel for my conference. Michigan had better win every non-conference game and lose every conference game for the rest of the season, just to make up for the profound shame this brought on the entire Big 10.
SEC folks, I’ll not begrudge you your shit-talking. I’ll begrudge Michigan your shit-talking. I hope we can agree, though, that this is an aberration that exceeds all aberrations.

Hello EDSBS readers,
A few quick points from someone who was actually at the Michigan/App State game today (section 14, not a bad view…but I digress)
a) App State is a solid team who would beat Michigan once out of 25 times provided the breaks went their way…today was that day!
b) App State travels a ton of fans (excellent tailgaiting at the golf course with them…good people all)
c) As a “Michigan Guy” fan wise, I was supremely disappointed in the season ticket base (about 20 percent, it seemed left after the 3rd quarter with Michigan down a touchdown, basically)…so called “loyal Michigan fanbase”…freaking pathetic that
d) it’s the losses that make the big wins worthwhile…if Michigan or Texas or ND or Florida won every game by 40 what would the point of me accepting free tickets from season ticket holder be?
e) Noting point d immediately above, please consider that one DomerGary…oh, I forgot, when was the last big Notre Dame win? Yeah, it’s cool Gary, I can’t remember either
f) Remember friends, it’s about good fun and sportsmanship (a little) and I always hope for a good upset in the March Madness…kinda cool to see it happen I guess
g) well, I guess I’ll just have to look forward to next week’s Oregon destruction and the annual Notre Dame ass kicking…that should take the edge off
Good times everyone

I was there, all I got was a sunburn and nearly fought a 60 year old man when I was told ‘down in front’. The biggest crowd to see a college game today? Yes, the biggest bunch of pussy, douche bag, asshole eliteists? You betcha. And thats just the fans. UM’s defense is terrible, and the offense ran the stretch zone play to the RB to the left side (ie, Jake Long) 38 times. 38. I counted. Michigan fans (which I painfully am) can shove their academic prestige right up their tea drinking, pinky raised asses and come to the realization that its not 1977 anymore, and if you could pass that on to LLLLLLLLoyd it’d be just super.

Meanwhile, I suspect Brewster Crew is looking for additional liquid solace as Bowling freakin’ Green currently is just pounding the snot out of the Gilded Rodents in Minneapolis.
And kudos to UCF for beating NC State in Raleigh — although O’Leary’s resume already lists this as bowl victory over Florida State.

I don’t give a damn if UM puts a 100 up on ND. ND didn’t lose to a DIV-2 school while ranked #5. Here is what really makes being a ND fan tough. If ND was to win out (NEVER GONNA HAPPEN) the ND haters would be all over them. We’d hear “Look at their schedule” or “They beat UM, and they lost to Appalachian State.” or “Sure they won their games, they play 2 of the service acadamies.” When it comes to ND it will never be good enough. This just happens to be one of those times where we get to laugh our asses off at a hated rival.
I only wished I owned the rights to the Fire Lloyd Carr website. From here on out, when a UM fan says “scoreboard” to a ND fan, we can kindly reply “Appalachian State.”

The Game – This is a game Michigan can’t win. Oh, sure, they’ll score more points that AppState, but no matter what the final score is, no Wolverine fan is going to feel good. Win by 40 and what’s the big deal, so they beat a I-AA, sorry, Champion Subdivision team. What bullies. Struggle against the best Champion Subdivision team and win by a touchdown and watch the Wolverines fall in the polls. This is not the weakest team Michigan will play this year. This would probably not be the worst team in the Big Ten. But a victory, no matter the margin, won’t look good or even be satisfying. MICHIGAN 42, APPALACHIAN STATE 23.

As I was leaving Michigan stadium – after having met up with and threatened to beat the shit out of my Buckeye-fan brother-in-law who I had given tickets to and who had the poor form to taunt me immediately after the game – I started to contemplate the enormity of this failure.
What came to mind is Lady Macbeth. No matter what Michigan does from here out, it will always be the team that lost to Hot Hot Hot U. Mallet wins three Heismans and two national titles? But you guys lost to App. St. Michigan beats ND 223-0 thereby achieving the largest victory in college football history? Hey do you remember when Michigan lost to the Mountianeers – no that the ones from West Virginia, the ones from NC. In other words, this is an endlible spot, it can never be erased.
In the history of college football there has never been a greater failure. To give you an example of how bad it is, I have not been able to take any joy in ND getting pasted by GT today even when I consider the batshit-crazy predictions for ND’s season record at BGS.

I thorougly enjoyed watching Tebow’s stunning pass fakes today at The Swamp. He does this slow-motion lurch like an ogre, a completely ham-fisted bow, probably while looking at his shoelaces trying to remember the sequence of events that are supposed to happen after the fake. Then he throws it for 30 or 40 yards. It was fun.
Gator fans were pretty laid back today. There was some whining when the defense didn’t make the safety, but I think everyone was too hot to really get upset.
Then I got to come home and watch GT over ND! Taylor Bennet seemed a little overzealous, but whatever.

Besides, as long as Michigan wins the conference, they still get an automatic playoff berth and can play their way to a rematch. It will be a much tougher game without HFA, but the Wolverines might be able to pull it off with a couple of breaks.

There’s performing analysis, and then there’s being an arrogant jackass. And every once in a while, karma is a bitch.
And last time I checked, this site was one based on “two men pushing thirty who should know better than to run a college football blog, but evidently don’t. Long time lurker, first time poster…
Does anybody really want to be Oregon next week?
Face it, the most dangerous team in the country right now probably is the one you all are laughing at today. Hungry doesn’t begin to describe it. If nothing more, they are playing for pride more than anyone else out there, right now. App State gave them the motivation that no coach’s halftime speech can provide, and you can rest assured that they are going to do everything imaginable (or die trying) to make examples out of the next 11 teams on the schedule.
Oregon should seriously consider staying on the team bus next Saturday.
by The Big Dog on Sep 2, 2007 1:36 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah, we suck. We really suck. Holy #$$!!, OMG, WTF, we suck like the event horizon of a black hole. And we know it.
And tomorrow, when I go to work at the medical center with my U. Michigan pin on my white coat, my fellow physicians from Texas and Ohio State and Arkansas and everywhere else are gonna tell me, “Man, your Wolverines truly suck,” and I’ll say, yep.
Because it’s true.
Because my Wolverines do suck.
And because they’re my Wolverines.
Fair-weather fanning is easy. Everybody’s a fan when you’re winning. It’s when your team bites it, blows it, blows it in a way no team in literal history has ever blown it, and it’s still your team — that’s what it means to be a real fan. When your team does something utterly humiliating — and nobody has ever been humilated like this — and it’s still your team, that’s what it means to be a real fan.
Everyone’s got their own reasons for their own fan loyalties. For me, it’s my oldest cousin beginning at U. Michigan almost twenty five years ago — and someone in my family being enrolled there every year since. It’s me going from the little boy who pulled for the Maize and Blue to the man who walked across the stage at Ann Arbor’s Hill Auditorium twice, to accept both my doctorates from the U of M. I’m a Michigan man, through and through, good times, bad times, and OMGWTF times alike.
So we’ll take our humiliations like men. A real fan always knows his own true colors. Mine are Maize and Blue. Sometimes they do well. Sometimes they truly suck. But win or lose, these colors don’t run.

Unless of course….YOU ARE A NOTRE DAME FAN.
Because, and try to keep up with me here…THE TEAM THAT YOU ROOT FOR IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE.
I do not care if Ohio State lost to the University of Belgium, if Michigan had just been defeated by 30 at the hands of Chan Gailey that would be my focus.
Again, Congrats to App St for an amazing performance.
by Ann Arbor Dave on Sep 2, 2007 10:06 AM EDT reply actions
Actually Dave, I don’t agree. I would trade places with ND in a heartbeat this morning. I survived the 34-9 where-did-that-come from debacle versus Iowa in 2002, the 38-28 loss versus Syracuse (it was 38-7 in the 4th quarter and Michigan got a number of garbage time TDs)in 1998, the 45-17 drilling by Tennessee in the 2002 Citrus Bowl, the 51-31 loss to FSU in 1991. All of those losses eventually fade because they are good division I teams with 85 scholarship athletes – the same number as Michigan can have. According to this morning’s paper, Division I-AA (or whatever it is called these days) schools are limited to 63. In the sands of time GT 33 ND 3 goes away, but Appalachian State 34 Michigan 32 will abide as long as college football is played.
A good portion of the Michigan mystique died yesterday. In the next 10 years, what football player will look at the winged helmet with fear and dread? If Appalachian State can beat Michigan then (insert team here) can to.
So this morning even ND fans have standing to ridicule us.

I too would rather lose to GaTech by 30 than lose to App St.
But the reality is Michigan lost to App St and Notre Dame lost to GaTech
I am not saying that other fans cant ridicule Michigan. I am saying that Michigan losing to App St. should not be more important to them than their team losing by 30 to Chan Gailey.
Laughing at Michigan to forget that your team is going to win 6 games and play in the MPC computers bowl is like laughing at Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan in order to forget that you make 15 dollars an hour and have a fat wife and kids who hate you and a small dick.

I guess because of the result, no one is mentioning how bonehead of a move it seemed to kick the field goal with 1st and goal from the Michigan 5 on the left hash and leave Michigan nearly 30 second to move down the field for a field goal that would have won the game. I was stomping around saying how stupid it was. You have time for at least one shot to run it to the center of the field and try to score a touchdown, then go out and spike the ball with 2 seconds left. I don’t get that call.
Of course, if it had been my cursed team that pulled that move, Michigan’s field goal would have sailed right through the uprights.

Here’s a little love for Cal – I thought they were going to lose their shit in the third quarter and instead they stuck the boot in. Nice work by the Golden Bears.
I’m not making mock of Michigan partly because others have a running start, and also because I wouldn’t exactly characterize SC’s win over Idaho as, ah, dominating. Concerns about the WRs weren’t entirely misplaced, and the defense seems to have reset to last September in terms of getting to the QB. They’re going to have to do better than that if they want to be at the front of the Pac 10 never mind anything else.
At least the second string got some playing time.

When I was on the ledge last night I started thinking. Making that last second field goal could have covered up the cold, hard truth. Missing it? Well, this loss is rock bottom. Lloyd will now have to go to a 12 step group, admit he’s powerless over his addiction to predictable play calling, and turn to his higher power for help.
Now, I’m not saying that I’m gonna have anything sharp in the apartment for the next 24 hours. I don’t want to get cocky . . . but making that field goal would have allowed everyone to just sweep glaring problems under the rug. Having that sucker blocked might force reality on the Michigan coaching staff and things. might. just. change.
There’s one more upside in this tornado of pain. I looked in the mirror this morning and saw my abs. I looked kinda "ripped!" I’ve been retaining fluid . . . . and I cried out 10 pounds of hot, salty tears.

Before yesterday I thought ND would go 7-5 on the year. The thing is, I thought we would beat GT. My pessimistic side told me that we might lose to GT in a close one, say 24-21 or something. Never, ever did I think that we would go (essentially) scoreless, have the o-line look like it did, start a QB that can’t throw, and leave the defense on the field for entirely too much time.
My previous post was aimed more at my belief that a Michigan loss, no matter how bad, does not take the poo taste out of my mouth after an embarrassing ND performance (as I assumed it would last night). That being said, go Irish!

Yesterday makes the Michigan-Domer game in a couple of weeks horrific for the loser. And given that both UM and ND face tougher opponents next week it is quite easy to visualize both schools going into that game 0-2.
The Pac 10 had a good weekend thanks to Cal and Washington and USC didn’t choke. The Trojans didn’t have the ideal intensity, but they started the game in excellent form and were able to turn it back on in the third quarter while the guys in the two-deep were still playing.
Stafon Johnson looks like the player he was supposed to be coming out of HS and CJ Gable looked as good. Joe McKnight showed that he will become an impact player soon and Stanley Havili’s hudlie over a defender was the sort of move any team would love to see from a tailback, let alone a FB

Because it came to me yesterday like a mesage from God. In talking to my buddy I thought, what on earth as the Michigan coach would I do to make sure the Wolverines understand how embarrased the coaching staff, alumni, students, fans, faculty, conference are. I keep them focused by PULLING THE FUCKING WINGS OFF OF THE HELMETS. Keep ‘em off until they show me otherwise. The names however have to stay on but be in even BIGGER font so all of tv land knows who the underperforming players are. But i’m not the head coach. So it won’t happen. Imagine that shit though….abusive but effective.
Finally the fans can communicate their displeasure with the team, university, AD, president…by not going to the next game. This is America, there is a choice and as paying customers have control over what kind of shit we watch. Imagine the revenue lost in concessions alone. Money talks. But you can’t educate the general public either that won’t happen. Good ideas though…really good ideas.
1) take the wings off of the helmets until further notice
2) no one show up for the next game(s)…to tell the admnistration that shit is completey fucking unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
3) fire the AD and the entire staff after the conclusion of the season.
4) Hire Patterson from Boise St and live a long and prosperous life as a Wolverine fan.
5) I talked to my Dad yesterday long distance (he’s a tOSU fan) he told me I could always jump ship and go with a winner. He said, write a letter to the AD and threaten to change alliances to tOSU…
this will never go away and it’s much worse than I thought….
