R.I.P., HARRY OLIVER.

Harry Oliver, former Notre Dame kicker, dead at the age of 47 after a long battle with cancer.

Like many of college football's niche heroes, Oliver was a good and well-liked player with one great and iconic moment he became beloved for: kicking a 50 yard field goal to beat Michigan on September 20, 1980. Watch Oliver's finest moment below, complete with Bob Ufer sounding as if he's just been stabbed with a barbecue fork in the lungs and is struggling to maintain composure.

Harry was a genuinely nice guy who loved college football and will be missed greatly by his friends and family.

“Notre Dame wins, 30-29. Notre Dame wins 30-27. Notre Dame wins 29-27, and we’ll be back.”

Gold. Pure straight up unfiltered gold. That was the epitome of pissed. I’ve seen people who’ve been crapped on less angrier than that.

and although I didn’t know who this man was before the kick, I can only imagine what his family is going through. RIP.

sorry, i clicked post before I meant to add this, I’m not an insensitive jerk

That kick was a beaut!

R.I.P. Mr. Oliver.

He posted three different scores within a span of 5 seconds – it takes a special gift to do that. R.I.P.

So, this is condolence thread for Oliver. Right. Well, can someone point me towards the make fun of Ufer thread? I’m confused.

by LSUJoshua on Aug 13, 2007 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Too soon, Mr. Oliver, too soon. RIP.

by DC Trojan on Aug 13, 2007 6:09 PM EDT reply actions

LSUJoshua, I think we can do both. You start with the statutory RIP statement, and then post separately with the mockery.

In this case, I’ll refrain, because while that field goal would have robbed me of the power of speech – well, polite speech – nothing is required to rob me of the power of basic arithmetic.

This made me think.
Who is the most celebrated kicker in College Football history?

by CHARLIE MURPHY on Aug 13, 2007 6:47 PM EDT reply actions

From a Michigan fan…

RIP Mr. Oliver, 47 is way too young.

by BK on Aug 13, 2007 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I just had eight drinks that my boss paid for. In fact he was present as I continued drinking.

by Anonymous IV on Aug 13, 2007 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

CHARLIE MURPHY… I think it’s Janikowski, because the man is an alcoholic and near 300 lbs but is a good kicker. But you might look towards who the awards are named after, Lou Groza and Ray Guy. Ray Guy was a sick punter.

by omar on Aug 13, 2007 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

Polish,Alcaholic,Date rape drugs,300lbs.
Truely a classic.

spelling is horrible….. sorry.

Sad to read about Harry Oliver passing away. Although he died after a battle with cancer, as the article states:

“One moment, though, had ensured he would live on from there.”

eric y: How did we go from remembering the life of Harry Oliver to slandering Janikowski?
jay whitlow: Must be some kind of drunken football logic.
eric y: Or just drunken logic wishing they could play football.

Big fucking deal. Kiss the ring, bitches!

What I find interesting is that the clip was apparently “presented” by michiganzone.com. But I give the man credit for thinking of speaking coherently in that moment, even in giving wrong scores. Certainly more than I could have mustered.

RIP Mr. Oliver.

If you read eric y’s comments like panels in a comic strip, they start to make a little more sense. Unfortunately, they read like Mary Worth or Hi and Lois.

Also, Re: 10, the first name that came to mind was Kevin Butler. Not sure why.

gawd, i love this site.

The kick was going to be going into a 25 mph wind until the players got set . . . and then the flags stopped waiving . . . and then the ball was snapped . . . and Harry Oliver was a hero.

More proof that God is Irish and loves Notre Dame

In these here parts (no, I don’t actually talk like that), the most celebrated kicker would have to be Van Tiffin. This is one of Keith Jackson’s best calls, which says something:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOyNwgWQsDk

Of course, in Lee County, he’s known as “Van Fuckin’ Tiffin”.

Hats off to Harry Oliver. I still have trouble believing that kick happened.

BBC, it’s either God or Lucifer…

Here’s the post from Blue Gray Sky about the same topic. In addition to a bit more commentary, they link to a video of the Tony Roberts call of the kick in addition to the ever-hilarious call by the Michigan announcer.

by PAK on Aug 14, 2007 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

There has never been a better announcer than Bob Ufer. Even a clip like this shows how much he loved Michigan football. How may of us Gator fans could calmly report the score after the UT game a few years ago when Baker got that bs unsportsman ? Bob was heartbroken by that kick.

Harry O was a religious, funny, generous kind and humble man. Harry was a ray of sunshine and brought many smiles to peoples faces whether it be the Notre Dame fans after the kick or to his friends and family. Harry fought the battle of cancer like a courageous man would. He had the hopes and optimizium that he would “kick it” and get better unfortunately he didnt but he continued to fight it like a true CHAMP up until his last day. God rest you in peace HarrBear we miss you.
