Why did you put West Virginia and UVA as rivals? They have never played regularly and don’t really care about each other one way or the other. It should be Virginia Tech-UVA or West Virginia-Virginia Tech. WVU-UVA just makes no sense.

North Carolina/Duke? Is it basketball season already?

Few football rivalries are more vicious than that oh so divisive Kansas / K State feud.

by TIGERinATL on Aug 1, 2007 9:18 AM EDT reply actions

Is it TTech & Okie State that is a rivalry? I thought it was A&M.

Also, choosing between KU and KSU doesn’t scare me. I’ll cheer for both, dammit.

by Rival on Aug 1, 2007 9:20 AM EDT reply actions

WVU/UVA????

Since when? I sincerely hope that the poster just assumed that due to their geographic proximity that we were rivals, and didnt think WVU and UVA were in the same state for God’s sake. There is definitely no “house divided” issues there, or any rivalry whatsoever for that matter. WVU/VT, WVU/MU and VT/UVA maybe, but definitely not WVU/UVA.

WVU… is that close to Richmond?

by CouchBurnin'Girl on Aug 1, 2007 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

Nebraska and Texas Tech?

I think not, my friend.

Before a defensive tackle intercepted, then fumbled the game away in our own territory; the ’Skers have owned Tech.

They did hand us out worst defeat in school history, but they are still very far from being considered a rival.

Just put Colorado up there, since it’s clear that OU/Texas has everyone’s attention. But really, when was the last great Red River game? Every year, it seems like one team just doesn’t show up to play.

A true rival can beat you with a 2-9 record.

Otherwise the graphic is superb…

Suggestions/substitutions:
That Colorado/Colorado St. rivalry has been really nasty in recent years. Then there’s the Egg Bowl – not too many talk about it, but they really don’t like each other, either.

Seriously, if the point was to highlight serious stabbing=passion rivalries, then all twelve slots would have been better filled by SEC rivalries plus tOSU/UM and UT/OU.

But still, kudos to Joshua for the effort. Those who cannot do, criticize.

ALSO, ESPN’s college show yesterday consisted of a fucking mock draft (aka, who college teams would trade/trade-for if they could). How idiotic is that? There’s enough REAL stories going on in college football 30 days out, why the hell do they have to play that Dungeons and Dragons/Candyland/what-if BULLSHIT?

#41: Georgia fans would lead you to believe that, but I can assure you that if you meet anyone with any ties to Georgia Tech, they will harbor a festering hatred for all things associated with that Cow College to the east. What happened to Alien vs. Predator?

AUgator is correct, Georgia’s SEC rivalry is with Florida, but alas, we haven’t been doing our part to keep it an actual rivalry. Georgia Teck is a proximity rivalry with the loser being forced to eat at a local Varsity for a week. Talk about colon cleansing.

If we’re talking intensity and depth of emotion, Carolina-Clemson is just as deep as Alabama-Auburn. I’ve lived in Florida and Georgia, and the passion is not as inflamed nor as pervasive for the big in-state rivals there, but Alabama-Auburn is right up there.

by Chg on Aug 1, 2007 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

  1. - Good point, and I have encountered that.

But the trouble is that there are relatively very few with any real ties to GT and all the “rooters” are UGA fans. Mostly its old codgers who remember when Bobby Dodd was whipping ass who foster much hatred on either side.

Its just not one of those where an outsider says “these people are insane!” like the Iron Bowl, the Coke Orgy, Egg Bowl, UT/Bamer, AU/LSU.

I think most Atlantans transplanted from other SEC locales (and thus a third party perspective) would back me up on this. Perhaps Orson will chime in.

by TIGERinATL on Aug 1, 2007 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

  1. thats tough to answer. I always assumed that the “house divided” garbage referred to families who have spouses and/or children who went to the rival schools.

I know a ton of families who have members that went to WVU and VT, but sadly we do not play them anymore.

Same goes for WVU and Marshall, but they are only rivals in a MU fan’s mind. To WVU fans they are just a mid-major warm up game, i.e. “rivalry” implies a certain level of competition.

WVU’s biggest rival is and historically has been Pitt, but I do not know of any families where some members went to WVU and some went to Pitt.

by WVUFan on Aug 1, 2007 11:18 AM EDT reply actions

I’ll second all the Nebraska/Texas Tech comments… with the added note that the two schools aren’t even playing each other this year, barring a bizarre series of occurences that knocks both Texas and Oklahoma out of the race for the Big 12 south and puts Tech in the driver’s seat.

by Rob on Aug 1, 2007 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

Craig #47 -

Ah, but that’s not the half of it. You can get Grand Valley, but not Saginaw Valley. No Northwestern, no Louisville, either. It’ll be a while before they get a dime from me. You’d think they’d get the major conferences fleshed out, before they went bottom feeding with the likes of Ferris State.

#18:

The WVU – Pitt Backyard Brawl has always been a great rivalry, but often of little importance and gaining only marginal national coverage.

The WVU – Va Tech rivalry, for the “Black Diamond Trophy”, has been a bit more important and harsher (esp. with unruly fans) over the past decade, and usually had post-season implications (recall the 2003 game – WVU 28, refs 7 – when Va Tech was ranked 3rd).

Now, with Va Tech in the ACC, the WVU – Louisville rivalry is picking up. Both programs are solid, and the game has the potential to have national championship implications. If I recall correctly, last year’s game was the second most watched college game in ESPN history (behind the previous year’s FSU-Miami game). This year will likely have a similar draw. The WVU – Pitt game, on the other hand, will merely be an ego booster for Mountaineer fans, and Heisman footage for Steve Slaton.

by MBH on Aug 2, 2007 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Pitt-WVU is more important to people in northern wv who tend to think of Pittsburgh as being the closest big city. In southern or eastern wv, people don’t really hate Pitt or anything, they are just kind of an irrelevant school with no fanbase. VT-WVU was much better and more heated.
