MIKE LEACH: LUBBOCK IS “SAVAGE.”

Again, you are not free. Free men do what they like any time they want and say anything they please. Free men do the weather on their local station with zero prep time if they please. Free men pass deep with 20 seconds left on the clock. Free men do radio interviews while going through restaurant drive-ins. Free men act and live like Mike Leach.
From Big 12 Media days, discussing Lubbock and the game day environment there:
“It’s very savage to play in Lubbock,” Leach said. “I would recommend that everybody try to avoid it. There have been scalpings and there have been some people that quite just haven’t returned.
“There are some people, unfortunately, based on the way the conference goes, that are going to have to come to our place. Sadly, I can’t guarantee their safety or that things will necessarily go the way that they like.”
You think he’s joking. Mike Leach never jokes, my friend: Texas Tech fans have already countered potential bad behavior with a preseason proposal to behave better at games, a manifesto concluding with an all-persuasive argument:
The differences we share both socially and economically are brought together by our love and passion for Texas Tech and our beloved Red Raiders.
For all these reasons, we encourage and support Texas Tech in its latest effort to create an atmosphere of Raider Power that fosters competition motivated by mutual honor, respect, pride and tradition.
We’re not trailer park trash, and it’s time to stop acting like we are.
Settle down, poor people! Love, university graduates of Texas Tech. We never knew of any great problems at Raider games, save several members of the band going hypoxic and passing out due to playing the fight song after scores in a five minute span. We do know that they can be very, very loud, even alone.
HT: Peter. Yes, we know this was up yesterday. But we needed that photoshop, dammit, courtesy of Brian at HRB.

The Texas Tech Treatise of 2007 is long overdue.
There seems to be a societal rift in the Lubbock trailer park community; those that attended TT and those who wish they had.
So while those with closer ties with TT will contiue to look down upon their neighbors, the lower caste are requested to shower on game day.

That clip ‘go raiders’ is priceless. How come they’ve never given defense a thought in Lubbock? With a competent defense they could easily play 2nd fiddle to whomever (texas or Ok) is on top in the BIg 12 South

The funny thing is that back in the old SWC days, Tech fans were among the best around. They traveled well to away games, were usually pretty friendly and generally didn’t cause any real trouble. I used to kind of like Tech way back when.
Something sinister has happened on the plains in the last 10 years or so. Every school has a subset of asshole fans, but the assholes seem to have taken over in Lubbock. I don’t doubt that Mike Leach himself has had something to do with that…

I feel I must stick up for Raider fans, since I am married to one. I have attended a number of games in Lubbock, including games rooting for the opposing team. I have not encountered the douchebaggery so many complain of, but then again, we don’t sit in the student section or endzones where most problems seem to occur.
Reality is, every school has their share of asshole fans. This is especially true with larger state schools with large contingents of “t shirt” fans — those who didn’t attend the school, but just bought their unlicensed logo shirt, hat, and spit cup at the local Walmart.

Oh, and isn’t Mike Leach’s outfit in the above photo a little like one of that reFSU’s pride and joy Jen Sterger’s favorite ensembles? The hacked pants ensuring minimal coverage of the crotchal area strung up with some form of abbreviated diaper? Just curious…

I roadtripped 16 hours to Lubbock in ‘02. It’s true. They don’t exactly roll out the red carpet. And, their asshole state troopers will pull you over and write you a ticket for going 80 in a 70 on a flat, straight interstate on a clear, sunny, Sunday afternoon with zero traffic.
I’d put Red Raider fans at a distant third behind LSU and WVU, respectively, as far as worst fanbases I’ve personally encountered. And, yes. I like to paint with a broad brush.
