This blog is idiotic. Business-to-business bartering is not a black market or gray market practice. Many businesses today barter to help control costs. This includes many university athletic departments AND the wannabe regional newspaper that this article was published in. In fact, the newspaper itself admittedly barters with the University of Toledo.

Once again, The Blah failed to uncover the hoped for scandal in its ongoing vendetta against the University of Toledo. This is a personal issue that the publisher–who lives in Pennsylvania–has had for years with the university.

“Dr.” Jacobs should consider the whorish relationship between the healthcare industry and big pharma before he comments on “the best ideas” for an athletic department operating on a shoe string budget to make ends meet. In fact, in recent years the UT presidents have had the Athletic Director’s hands tied as regards fund raising while the “university” first drained as much money as it could out of potential donors and financial resources.

It’s sad that blogs like this get started by ignorant individuals who have too much time on their hands and think they’re cute spouting off about things they no nothing about. Just think–if every day really were Saturday I’ll bet the author of this blog could get his GED in a week!

The rule is officially on the books, which I interpret as a face-saving sop to the ADs who worked so hard to try to implement it, but the presidents watered down the final product so that schools can meet the standard by average 15,000 *paid* (not actual) once every two years. Combine that with the rule permitting bulk ticket sales to count as “paid,” and you get a formalistic standard that only a crackhead orangutan could fail to meet.

(In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a tax lawyer by training, and I *love* rules that are this easy game.)

If you hate Weis that much, at least take comfort that we’ve learned that “if it bleeds (internally for 30 hours after bypass surgery), we can kill it.”

I’m not sure exactly what motivated Toledo here (other than ‘Stutz’s insatiable ham-lust), but barter deals are one of the ways that small-fry teams game what’s left of the attendance requirement. Instead of taking outright donations or sponsorships, teams provide a certain number of tickets in exchange for merchandise or cash contributions. As long as the per-ticket price is at least one-third of face, I believe the NCAA rules allow you to count it as “sold” for purposes of hitting the stupid 15K minimum.

As I’ve preached to my MAC brethren for years, only an AD run by crack-addicted orangutans could fail to meet the new “attendance” requirement, and anyone who can’t make it has a resources problem moresoe than a butts-in-seats issue.

And here’s how you can tell that Toledo is a football school: ‘Stutz had a down year and got a 2007 Ridgeline. Stan Joplin (men’s hoops) won the MAC regular season title and got stuck in an eight-year-old Lexus.
