INCREASE IN BLACK COACHES STILL INADEQUATE.
The NCAA released their report on race in NCAA athletics this past week, citing statistics submitted by member institutions that the NCAA says were “robust enough to be meaningful” despite only 782 schools out of 1,054 member schools responding. According to the report, the total number of men’s and women’s basketball and football coaches increased by 76 percent over the past decade.
Nevertheless, the report sounded a note of brutal honesty in assessing the disparate numbers of black head coaches and assistant coaches in collegiate sport:
“Overall, if you look at the growth of student-athletes of color who are involved in NCAA athletics, the big takeaway from this report is that the growth is not being reflected in the numbers of individuals who are either choosing or receiving the opportunity to become assistant or head coaches, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators,” (Charlotte Westerhaus, NCAA Diversity-type) said.
Charlie Strong, turned down for half the coaching jobs in the SEC, would agree.

National championship defensive coordinator. 24 years experience. Someone give him a head job, please.

how can people NOT realize that there is an experienced d-coordinator here at Florida that will make an absolutely excellent head coach. i think he lost some of his luster after the Peach Bowl thrashing by the hands of Miami a few years ago when he was interim-ing for Zook, but nobody could have done better with that group of un-inspired players. every year he goes unhired i feel like he’s getting hosed, but that anger is tempered when i remember that he’s coming back to coach for us…

I have always heard he does not give the world’s best job interview from my friends in Cola. Also, recently, he has become more selective regarding where he sends a resume.
He does not seem to have any interest in C-USA jobs like UAB, which makes no sense.
Only Georgia has fared well in the SEC in recent years bringing outside assistants in as head coaches.
Perhaps if Strong truly wants to be a head coach, or a head SEC or ACC coach, he should start out at the non-BCS level or even I-AA.

Can’t agree, Coop. How does Gene Chizik get a BCS job with no stronger a resume than Strong’s? I can’t say if Strong applied at Iowa State or not. Personally, I can’t imagine that being a great job.
I think Strong’s resume is good enough for him to pick and choose – I-AA is certainly beneath his resume (Dear Mr. Strong, We can not offer you the head coaching position at I-AA scholl because you’re overqualified! Good luck in your future endeavors.)
A good non-BCS school may be worth a look.

Okay, let’s try again.
Strong wants a good job, the equivalent of a Georgia, Tennessee, etc. He is not going to get it as his first head coaching job. Just not going to happen for several reasons, being black not being first and foremost.
He does not want a chicken shit job in the Big 10 or Big 12 like Iowa State or Minnesota. He does not want an impossible situation like those schools.
But, he is not going to get what he wants as his first job. Thus, stick around the area, make some hay at a UAB type gig, and parlay that into a head coaching job, such as South Carolina when Spurrier retires.
He does not come across as a Richt type in interviews, interpret that however you want, I have been told, so he needs to set his sights lower, because I doubt he would be hired at Florida, either.

Look at the major schools in the SEC and who they’ve hired recently:
Florida – Meyer – proven head coach; Zook – career assisstant
Alabama – Saban – proven head coach; Shula – career assisstant
Auburn – Tubberville – proven head coach
Tennessee – Fulmer – promoted from within
Georgia – Richt – career assisstant
LSU – Miles – proven head coach; Saban – proven head coach
The only career assisstant to make the jump in the SEC to a big time program and have success recently is Richt. The trend now is to find coaches that have proven themselves elsewhere and bring them in. The SEC is in “win now” mode, at least with the big money programs, and they can afford to go after a known coach. They don’t have to take a chance on someone and spend time going through a learning period.
Strong most likely will have to take a small BCS school over or a non-BCS offer, prove himself as being able to recruit and win as a head coach on his own. Then he’ll start getting offers from the big boys.

He could do well in an ACC school like a UNC or something.
I’m wondering when a sample size of 782 isn’t robust enough to mean something, although it leaves the possibility of NO D-1A football schools reporting data. Statistically small, assuredly, but still possible given the funkiness of the NC2A.
I would have to say also that one reason this Strong guy has no HC job is because, I for one have never heard of him. He doesn’t make boosters’ balls tingle when you mention his name, so hes stuck in FL for now. He should go light it up at Marshall or something, bring them back to being bowl contenders, then bounce for his choice job after.

He may well not want a job like either of those, but there is no such thing as an impossible situation in the Big 12 North where outsmarting Bill Callahan is the major hurdle w/r/t semi-regular Conference Championship Game appearances which would be enough to make any of those fan bases giddy.

I’ve heard him interviewed. He’s all charisma and motivation. But man…he struggles with the Subject Verb agreement in talking with the media. I can’t imagine how poorly that comes off in front of a university president.
The less polished a guy is the longer he sits. Hell, look at Ralph Friedgen. That dude took FOREVER to get a head coaching job b/c he’s so unpolished. He had won a national title as an assistant AND taken a team to the Super Bowl as OC. He had turned around 3 college programs from shitburgers to 10+ win seasons.
But there was no outcry for Fat Coaches to get a break?
Charlie is a very good DC, but it’s not all the White Man that’s holding him back. Some of it is Charlie.

Wrong…there was more talent at MSU when Croom arrived than there is now. It’s key to hire a coach who understands that recruiting is the name of the game.

Paul, you don’t think Croom’s own ineptitude has contributed to his situation? The head scratching moments are numerous, from punting on UGa’s 30 yard line to trying to fit a square (Omarr Conner) peg into a round (drop-back offense) hole.
It’s not as if Croom was left with no talent. Jerious Norwood broke the school single game rushing record and still lost to UK by double digits. Croom kicked off more Parade All-American’s than he’s recruited. Also, he spent the first month and a half treating MSU like a part time job, while in Green Bay 4 days of the week.
As for Strong, I seriously doubt MSU hires him. No way do we take another chance on someone with zero head coaching experience.
