FULMER CUP SCOREBOARD: PENN STATE UBER ALLES
The big board for the week arrives, courtesy of reader Brian. We had to install some new bulbs just to fit Penn State’s score on there…

Penn State like WHOA. Please leave questions, comments, and jeers below.

DevilGrad says:
Sweet mother of God! OU went about a month and a half with an arrest every weekend (not even counting the coaching staff). Toledo has a freakin’ points-shaving scandal. And both are just barely hanging on in the top ten.
The BCS-league felons have really stepped up their games this off-season. It’s a new era, and “three yards and a cloud of misdemeanors” just doesn’t cut it any more.

Run Up The Score says:
I was just about to ask if we got a bonus point for so many points for a single incident, but I forgot about Spencer Ridenhour knocking over a girl on campus with his car.
Nice to back on top of the college football world. View’s good from here. If I didn’t know any better, I swear I can make out a developing cocaine ring in Tempe.

CapstoneAlum says:
After the incident was investigated, with interviews completed and evidence collected, the three were allowed to continue.
They apparently were headed to Ohio.

43? 43? that twice as many points as they will score in any game this season!

I’m still waiting for my promised moniker for maintaining the scoreboard. With the expense that comes with maintaining all these light bulbs for PSU, I’m requesting my due.
[Payment will come in the form of pats on the back and the mention of your name with the phrase “hung like Reggie F’n Nelson” for the rest of your life on this blog.]

@dave
If we can’t win our conference, then we shouldn’t go to the mythical Fulmer Championship game.

Jim Delaney should be so proud. Maybe if the Integer had more SEC type speed the players wouldn’t get caught as easily.

italiangator says:
Speaking of Delaney, has anyone thought to send him an email with the score updates? I’m sure he’d be happy to see the conference’s accomplishments in numerical form.

Hey Capstone Alum,
I was wondering where tosubuckeyes was at as well. Wasn’t that long ago where he was talking smack about the SEC representin’ in the FC. Just goes to show how off-season training is critical, especially during the FC race.

I thought I saw last week that the Penn State players copped a plea to lesser charges than what the F.C. Standings are based on. No?
April 30th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
16
Nick says:
I expect the charges to be diminished when all is said and done, however, don’t ruin our moment in the sun.

The Lions look good right now, but i expect that Indiana will score some meaningless points at the end and knock Penn State down to #2.

PeterPumpkinhead says:
Hey that’s a good question… what’s the policy on plea bargaining? Are points assigned on original charges, or on the outcome of the prosecution?
April 30th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
21
PeterPumpkinhead says:
And if it’s the outcome of the prosecution, have points ever been retroactively removed if a player has been tried and found not-guilty?

Mike @ Black Shoe Diaries says:
I think we’re going to see a lot of the charges dropped against the PSU guys. Preliminary hearing is Friday and the defense lawyers are going to move to have most of the charges dismissed. The DA is going to have a tough time providing probable cause and identifying which players were throwing punches.
It’s still pretty funny to see Penn State on top of the scoreboard. Even if it is just temporary.

Chris Bohnker says:
One thing I am noticing, from my brief time looking at this website and this wonderful contest, is that like basketball, one guy can make a lot of difference in the score, and really impact the team standings (like that kid from Idaho, for example).
But I think there needs to be another point added for incidents like the Penn State case, where you get four or more players involved at one sitting. Sort of a “teammate” bonus, as it were.
April 30th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
26
DevilGrad says:
My recollection is that last year’s scoring was based on charges and not adjusted for later drops or pleas. To do otherwise would unfairly deny glory to schools located in towns with overly friendly police chiefs and DAs with sideline passes.

Steve says:
I think it’s definitely worth considering the following fact: the season does not start for about four months, and these guys are already in trouble. Wait until we get all the On The Road fightin’ in da’ club charges.

Please, don’t send Delaney any numbers. The man is already having a helluva time trying to make sense of how the Big 10 can have 11 teams.

I still can’t believe that my alma mater has not only made their first appearance on the board (correct me if I’m wrong), but actually has a commanding lead in the Fulmer Cup standings.
Unbelievably embarrassing, and a bad omen for the 2007 season.
April 30th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

Actually, Mike, it’s a good omen. There is nothing like an offseason spent running from the law to increase speed.

I’m pretty sure Orson’s been reducing points based on dropped charges, plea bargains, etc.
Also, Mario Manningham busted for drugs? Can’t stop the Big Televen, yo.

atepesm says:
Wow.
Big Ten is dominating.
So . . . does that mean the Big Ten is more felonious and its leadership allow the long arm of the law to lay it down, or does it mean the ACC/SEC is the Big EASY and nobody gets arrested for their felony behavior?
Hmmm . . . . .
Waitaminute, Where’s OU?

Big Jon says:
# 34,
That difference you’re seeing is the SEC speed outrunning the cops. If the Big 10 were faster, they wouldn’t have as many charges.

tOSUBuckeyes says:
This system is flawed – how do the two schools who had the biggest on-the-field brawl in the history of college football not have a single combined point – did both teams ship their guys over seas for the off season??? WTF? How does Florida only have more points than the rest of the entire state combined?
PSU 43 Points for a college dorm brawl with no guns, dope, or naked women involved, and I though Joe Pa got screwed back in 86(?) when they went undefeated only to not get the NC.

JohnnyBGood says:
Fear not PSU Fans – regardless of whether there are convictions or not, good ole JoePa will step in and reprise the role of “Governor Pappy O’Daniel” in “O’Brother” and grant your boys a pardon.
“Seems like our DA is harboring a hateful grudge against the Soggy Bot…, I mean my entire starting defense. Well, not me, I’m a forgive and forget Christian. Especially if the girl was a looker – what would you do if that girl showed up at your door….what? There was no girl? What were we talking about again? So sleepy…….”
I’m sure those boys are ready to give up their misdemeanorin’.

Re #38: While the brawl certainly was Fulmer-esque, the Cup season doesn’t start until after all the bowl games are over and, thus, alas, FIU’s terrific work back in October did them about as much good in this competition as aTm’s “win” in the spring game.
April 30th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Jeff from LA says:
According to Brian of MgoBlog, Michigan’s not going to let Penn State win the Fulmer Cup without a fight. Depending on how many players were involved, they could be putting pressure on Idaho for 3rd place. That would give the Big 10 spots 1-3. Who says the Big 10 isn’t a competitive conference?

You guys got humiliated on the Penn State call just as I knew you would. AT THE PRELIMINARY HEARING, charges against King dropped. Charges against Hayes, Sargeant, and Sales dismissed with prejudice by the Judge. Two charges against Baker dismissed for complete lack of evidence. Scirrotto is the only player facing charges, and he’s a choir boy–this is going nowhere.
Pwned!
