FULMER CUP SCOREBOARD, 4/18

The Big Board arrives, a few days late due to circumstances beyond our control. Corrections and addenda will follow.

Corrections, addenda, errata, nicto!

LSU's owed a few points. In between the board-building and the posting, LSU broke into the scoring with a two point battery charge for offensive lineman Kyle Anderson, who walloped someone and ended up in jail in East Baton Rouge, which now that we're typing it sounds like something we never, ever want to happen to us.

BYU is docked a few for dropped charges against Vic So'oto, one of two BYU football players involved in the burglary resulting from a dispute over water balloons. Utah fans may still prepare the water balloons for this year's game; they may not, however, count So'oto's two points, taking BYU to four points total in the standings.

Arkansas State's owed a ten-spot, stat. The Indians pick up ten points for five players charged with third-degree battery (which is really just slapfighting in legal terms) and disorderly conduct for fighting in a roller skating rink parking lot in Jonesboro, Arkansas. As tempted as we are to award a bonus shame point for violating the sanctity of the roll-bounce, we'll content ourselves with awarding ten points to them and seeing if the charges stick--as piddly as they are, we're betting they won't. (HT: The Power T.)

(Bill Withers' "Lovely Day" combined with images of rollerskating is awesome. That is all.)

South Carolina gets in line behind Penn State for possible impending points thanks to the craze that's sweeping the Southland this year: waving a gun in the air and discharging it wildly at a club or party! FIESTA!

This being South Carolina, it not only involves a football player, but an important one whose loss to the team due to legal issues would dent their on-field performance: running back Cory Boyd. The relevant details from WLTX, courtesy of Doc and LWS:

Investigators say the incident began when some gang members had a confrontation with USC football players. Deputies say according to witnesses, a man identified as Cory Boyd fired a gun into the air. Investigators say the gang members retaliated, and fired shots at the players. Deputies say people began running away and "total chaos erupted."

No one was hit by the bullets.

Investigators say they found marijuana residue, tobacco shavings and the odor of burnt marijuana. They say there also was a broken window at the scene.

Cory Boyd's aftermath sounds a lot like the wake of the NBA All-Star game, minus paralyzed bouncers and concussed strippers. It's under investigation, but along with the slow-maturing situation at Penn State regarding a burglary/beatdown combo, watch it for further developments.

Edit: Remember that Cory Boyd is, in fact, still back like cooked crack:

Minnesota's rape case is still wobbly, but pending. We keep hearing the rape case is wobbly, but haven't gotten anything confirmed yet.

“cory boyd….he’s giving cooked crack a bad name.”

I’m disappointed that you left “cock” out of that sentence.

I warned you, damnitt, not to let South Carolina drop off the bottom of the scoreboard back into FC obscurity. Bad mojo I said. Worse than drinking Jabu’s rum, I said. Did you listen? Fuck no. Now, look what you caused.

Wobbly? How about “Disgusting but not rape”

If the details ever leak on this one it’d make one hell of a soap opera, but it wouldn’t show up on Law and Order.

Probably won’t count for this year’s Fulmer cup, but a video of Auburn players getting drunk has surfaced.

by NewAZTiger on Apr 18, 2007 9:05 AM EDT reply actions

Regarding the Penn State “incident”, I’ve been hearing non-chat room talk that only 1 or 2 players MAY be charged. I’d put the fulmer cup o/u on PSU points at 7.

Yeah the Penn State situation has gone from wild speculation and rumor to eerie quiet. We’ll wait and see what develops

Yep, agree with the remark on Kyle Anderson. East Baton Rouge Parish jail is not a fun place to spend the night. The pillows taste way too nasty.

Did anyone else make the mistake of seeing the far inferior ATL just because it had roller skating in the trailer after being delighted by Roll Bounce?

by Holly on Apr 18, 2007 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

I heard the ASU fight broke out b/c the DJ announced that it was couples’ skate only, and while the D-Line was ok with that, the backs and ends wanted to do a backwards skate only song. Madness ensued.

by RaginCajunRebel on Apr 18, 2007 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

Um, the skating per se wasn’t what led us to ATL…um, sure. Yeah. That was it. Not the repeated shots of ass.

by Orson Swindle on Apr 18, 2007 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

Ah, just wait for it PSURob, if they get charges dropped I’m sure somebody’ll be willing to step up and fill the void with new ones. That’s the meaning of team, right?

see, Arkansas State is crazy too – my whole homestate is just fucked really. More so than normal.

Something tells me if the DA’s investigative team is headed by Clemson grads, then he is to be hit with at least discharging the weapon in public, hopefully they don’t hate enough to stick an attempted murder charge for it;

If by Cock grads, then simply a case of mistaken identity

I’m personally surprised that the gang members returned fire AT the players.

I guess Boyd also thought they were obligated to return fire “into the air” under the South Central Queensbury Rules.

Know what I blame for South Carolina’s Fulmer Cup surge? That confounded Confederate Battle Flag!

by Gurn on Apr 18, 2007 12:15 PM EDT reply actions

“I’m back, back like cooked crack.” How fitting. So how many SEC players have fired weapons this year and for how many rounds total? That should be a new Cup. It’s one thing to get into an old fashion brawl at a party or get caught with a bag of weed, but as always, the SEC has to represent and take things to a whole new level. You guys really are the best at everything.

Does it not bother anyone else that we have football players carrying around semi-automatic weapons and are not afraid of discharging them in public?

But I guess if you’re alright with your start running back telling the nation that he’s back like cooked crack, the only thing you really care about is whether or not he’ll help bring that coveted SEC championship home.

I KNEW there was a reason A-State stayed D1vision I-A, er, Bowl Division. Just because ASU is in the Sun Belt doesn’t mean they can’t skate with the big boys!

Woo-Hoo! I-N-D-I-A-N-S!

by sjs1959 on Apr 18, 2007 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I don’t know what is going on with the Penn State incident these days. All of the rumors have completely disappeared. Supposedly, the only player who will be charged is a backup defensive back who used a bottle as a weapon during the fight.

At this point, the rest of the situation seems to be on its way to “boys will be boys” territory, without charges. So I’d actually put the PSU potential Fulmer Cup points at three or four.

Whatever, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

by Run Up The Score on Apr 18, 2007 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

  1. - Penn State should be docked Fulmer Cup points just for being such a big tease

by Tomek on Apr 18, 2007 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

WTF with Illinois? I remember some minor incidents a couple months ago, but twice the points of anybody else? For what? Were there 15 players involved in one arrest? Half Ohio’s team has been arrested, and they’re only a third of the way to the lead.

Speaking of Arkansas, I put the entire state and everyone who’s ever been there on notice this morning. I’ve lived essentially my entire life in a state immediately adjacent to Arkansas and still have never driven or set foot in the place, and I think I’m better for it. I don’t even think I’ve flown over Arkansas. I hope not.

by smq on Apr 18, 2007 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

  1. — I can’t disagree, but it seemed like a much, much bigger deal at the time. 10-12 players showing up at a party to kick some ass in the name of revenge? Juicy.

Still, we’ll wait for it to play out.

  1. — Here’s a thread discussing some of what’s known (and what’s not) about the incident that led to the rape allegations but no charges, links to a couple of newspaper articles in the thread. I don’t think if I’d classify it as soap-opera stuff, but I would be surprised to see charges unless something substantially more damning comes to light.

Cory Boyd, another brilliant character judgement by Lou Holtz.

But seriously, if you’re over near Columbia Mall late at night, that can only mean bad things. If the cops don’t get you, the Two Notch trannys will.

I am going to protest the use of the term “USC football players” to describe South Carolina football players. That led to some confusion when I was just skimming over the posts. The proper term is “USCe™ football players,” “SC football players,” or possibly just South Carolina football players.

When describing trouble-making “USC football players,” the acronym USC is reserved solely for Southern California.

Someday, Southern California is going to have to play South Carolina for the rights to the initials.

Does So Car get bonus points for Garcia not even having to serve his entire Fulmer-style “offseason” suspension? Similarly, the only way I see Boyd missing the second game of the year is if he’s wearing an orange jumpsuit.

To give some clarification to the Cory Boyd story. According to a Cloumbia Police Officer involved with the case:
Boyd and another USC football player were working as bouncers for a private black fraternity party at a club owned by a former player’s mother. Some “gang” members tried to access the club without proper ID and were turned away. They later came back with proper ID and were allowed in the club. Confrontations inside the club later in the evening led to some of the “gang members” to produce firearms and shoot them into the air. The leading story in The State (Columbia’s newspaper) on monday was a headline “USC running back Cory Boyd questioned about shooting”. The story blew up from there. I really wouldn’t expect Fulmer Cup points to be issued on this one. By the way, The State is so fucked up that they were running this story ahead of the VT story.

Spurrier: Boyd Could be Cleared

(Sumter) – USC head football coach Steve Spurrier says running back Cory Boyd may not face charges in a recent shooting incident.

Spurrier made his comments Wednesday while speaking at the Gamecock Club in Sumter.

Spurrier told the crowd that although the investigation into last weekend’s shooting continues, he thinks all indications look like Boyd could be cleared of being a person of interest.

Spurrier did say he’ll wait unit the rest of the investigation has concluded.

Deputies responded to 201 Columbia Mall Boulevard Suite 169 around 12:45 Sunday morning, to hundreds of people running from the scene and shots being fired.

No one was hit by the bullets.

The owner of the building, Patricia Thompson, rented out the building for a large Omega Psi Phi fraternity party.

An incident report had said that a witness identified Boyd as being there and firing a shot, but that has not been confirmed by investigators.

by WB on Apr 19, 2007 1:01 AM EDT reply actions

Call us a directional school if you want, but Southern California has produced far better lawyers. That’s why we won all of the trademark cases prohibiting Gamecocks from using “USC” insignia or logos on their official gear. I’d also add the fact that www.USC.edu belongs to Southern California.

I am a bit confused though as to why an Auburn fan is coming down on the side of South Carolina.

by Jeff from LA on Apr 19, 2007 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

Note that I am referring only to official gear, the USC logo is used all over by South Carolina for the unofficial gear.

by Jeff from LA on Apr 19, 2007 1:11 AM EDT reply actions

Directional schools must defer to state schools for initials.

What happens if the state school is named after a directional state? Doesn’t that bump them back down the list?

Are there any by-laws on this?

by DC Trojan on Apr 19, 2007 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

Actually, I stand corrected, I thought the case prohibited South Carolina from any use of USC, but it apparently only affected a particular logo appearance from appearing too close to USC’s logo and not the usage of the term “USC.” My bad.

by Jeff from LA on Apr 19, 2007 1:17 AM EDT reply actions

Re: 44

Garcia was suspended for spring practice. Spring practice is now over.

I don’t even know who you support, but I will bet right now that Spurrier has a better track record of punishing trouble makers than your school’s coach.

Jeff from LA, South Carolina defeated Southern Cal 38-14 in 1983. The all time series is 1-1.

by Chg on Apr 19, 2007 2:58 AM EDT reply actions

AZTiger,

If we are going by initials and length of time as the prinmary attributes, then the left coast USC wins.

They were “USC” about 25 years or so before the right coast institution became “USC”.

Prior to a reorganization in the early 1900s, the school was SCC (South Carolina College).
