LEAK SCORES EIGHT ON WONDERLIC, TEBOW SOLVES RUBIK’S CUBE WITH BARE FEET.
Via Losers with Socks and the Wizard of Odds: this year’s Wonderlic wunderkind hits a bit close to home, if rumor is to be believed. Chris Leak, walking under Jamarcus Russell and and under Brady Quinn’s huuuuuge pectoral muscles to get to the classroom, allegedly racked up a whopping ocho on the Wonderlic test, the professional football equivalent to an IQ test. (For those not in the know, ocho is Finnish for ‘not good.’)
Is Chris Leak Like Cameron Diaz in ‘In Her Shoes’? Pretty and literacy-problematic?
Remember that last year agents were having kittens over Vince Young scoring a six? This story is like that, but instead of a first-rounder, it’s over Chris Leak, a prospect whose most optimistic supporters would be thrilled at a solid NFL Europe run followed by a steady Arena Ball career. Leak clocked a 4.7 instead of his vaunted 4.5 (a number no one believed anyway,) measured up at sub six feet, and now racked up a number that, while still above this year’s low of 4 (some poor Iowa State running back, presumably caught in a revolving door at this very moment coming out of his hotel in Indianapolis,) reeks of “literacy problems.”

Could it be true? Sure. Leak had trouble reading defenses, didn’t blow doors on the SAT, and majored in the subject that gives Auburn Academic All-Americans: sociology. It’s entirely possible he got that score, as anyone who saw the pick at the 2:00 mark in the video below can attest.
Antwain Robinson can believe it, sure. But the test itself might have been a bit unfair to Leak, as the Wonderlic famously preys on its takers’ insecurities. It can be a veritable psychological torture run for players, and for a player known to shudder under pressure, it may have been too much for Leak. Just take a look at the EDSBS exclusive copy of the Wonderlic Leak took:

It really wasn’t fair from the start. We demand a recount, and a Tebow-free Wonderlic for Leak.

Standardized tests blow. When I took the LSAT a few years back, this chick 3 seats down left the reservation. She picked up all 10 of her #2 pencils and snapped them methodically, threw her timer on the floor, and walked out of the test. That was bad enough, but it’s like watchin the first guy off the landing craft get his head blown off at Normandy. Everyone else was shaken up pretty bad and there were some other less-dramatic wig-outs.

I would say that winning the national championship and/or the Heisman just means bad things for quarterbacks.
The last three SEC quarterbacks with a ring would be Chris Leak, LSU Gigantor Quarterback ‘03 and Tee Martin. Then you can throw in Danny Wuerffel and Jay Barker. Yikes.

Mike Honcho in #17, lighten up. #10 is scarcastically using the inverse of the scarcastic logic presented in #5.
IF “literacy-problematic quarterback = national championship” THEN the inverse is “inteligent quarterback = beautifully horrible disaster”.
Because TEBOW is *scarcastically* more educated than the “Big-Man-Himself”, then he is destined to be a failure.
It was the same type of exaggerated, utterly unsubstantiated assertion that appears at this site numerous times a day that keep things funny. There’s no need to introduce “facts” to mess up the Karma.

He may have gotten 8/12 questions correct, but that’s a misread of the information.
The Wonderlic has fifty questions and is administered in 12 minutes, measuring a tester’s ability to think and think quickly. Leak only answered 12 questions in total, and of those got 8 right before 12 minutes was up.
Either Leak didn’t understand the setup, and moved through the thing at a snail’s pace, or it just took him that long because he had difficulty with it. Retests are no doubt pending.

Someone contacted the author of the link you posted w/ Leak’s score. Here’s his response:
It is my understanding that this is from the campus agility tests, which I assume is the 2006 pro day on campus. The score was obtained from nfldraftscout.com. I believe the score is probably legit given Leak probably did not prepare for the Wonderlic since he had no real incentive to. I’m sure he will fare better at the combine. I am enclosing the section of his bio where I found the score. Note the 8/12 score means he answered 8 of 12 correctly. This shows much more room for improvement than an 8/30, which would lead one to believe he is simply guessing more or less at random.

I’m surprised old-fashioned combine tests like the 40-yard dash and the Wonderlic are given so much weight in this day and age. Didn’t Vince Young prove that you can grade out as functionally retarded and still win NFL rookie of the year? Why not have all the combine participants go on that new gameshow with Jeff Foxworthy, something like “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” It’s about as useful as the Wonderlic.
During Senior Bowl week, Leak was the first QB to learn the playbook and impressed everyone with his study skills. He picked up the offense faster than the supposedly better-educated Big Ten QBs did. I don’t think we have anything to worry about in terms of Chris Leak’s intelligence.

So apparently the score given is from a sample test of 12 questions last year. So Leak’s 8/12 is more like a 33 on the full Wonderlic. Leak’s a sharp kid, and when I first saw this, I knew there had to be something fishy. Hopefully when his Wonderlic score from this year’s full test comes out he does even better.
