COLLEGE FOOTBALL BLOGGER AWARDS: BEST REGULAR FEATURE, A.K.A. "THE BRAN MUFFIN"

If you just joined us, we're announcing the winners of the 2006 College Football Blogger Awards today and tomorrow. Here's what you may have missed:

  • Best New Blog
  • "The Trev," or the funniest blog
  • The "Dr. Z Award" for best analysis
  • Best Mainstream Media Blog
  • OTHERS

But now it's time to announce the winner of this year's Best Regular Feature Award, a.k.a. the "Bran Muffin," in honor of the regular, powerful, on schedule mental colon cleanser you look forward to as a reader.

First, the nominees:

Best Regular Feature

FOR: The best recurring feature of the year.

CRITERIA: The feature should be posted weekly and be generally good and stuff.

CFB Award Nominee: Best Regular Feature

And the winner of the Bran Muffin is . . .

Star-divide

Friday Morning Quarterback, SMQ. How a guy who started out as a Gregg Easterbrook clone but morphed into something more substantial and less annoying--imagine being trapped next to Easterbrook on the LA-Taipei trans-Pacific route, and you'll feel us here--boggles our mind.

Yet there it is: every game of even negligible import, complete with blurbs loaded with verve, purpose, and wit. Only SMQ could make us give two rat's asses about Southern Miss football, and yet...we do when we read him. The pregame essential for the season.

Again, only song can fully express our admiration. Why you don't get paid millions to write, we'll never understand. Perhaps they're afraid of a real man--a manly, manly man.

While I love SMQ, I don’t understand how it can beat out he Fulmer Cup. View it from a utilitarian standpoint: which feature provides me (college football fan) with the most utility? Sure, SMQ provides excellent in-season statistical preview and game break down, but there’s the point: it’s IN-SEASON. There are actual games to watch! His job is half-done for him! The Fulmer Cup keeps us alive over the long, nightmarish months that are “not football season.”

Congrats to SMQ!

On a second note…“KEY-OOOOOOO!! Maybe I’ll show you some real moves sometime. (Asshole.)”

I think it’s a crime that the Blogpoll didn’t even get a nomination in this category.

I’m with Mike from BSD. The Blogpoll and its attendant features (“wack ballot”, C/K, etc.) is a wonderful, wonderful thing. No offense, Orson, but I don’t know if you can even call the Fulmer Cup a “regular” feature, hostage as it is to events outside y’all’s control. It’s not really any different in that respect than any other theme that a given blogger returns to from time to time.

If I was asked, I’d nominate Unverified Voracity rather than UFR – along with the Blogpoll.

Got to it before me Fish fan. Obvisouly Florida is going for this title as well. Still, didn’t I say that suspended licenses were UGA’s cup of tea? And here I thought that Meyer was only getting the top 1% of 1% of kids out there. And yet the off the field issues are starting to add up, no? Guns, drugs, domestic violence, and now driving issues… oh, and they are signing a kid who has already admitted to accepting inappropriate gifts. Dang, I guess UF is just trying to fill the void that the U and FSU have left this year. My favorite quote from eth article though was : "The elder Demps said he had requested to talk to Meyer several days ago but hasn’t heard from the the Gators coach, who is in the middle of recruiting season with national signing day on Feb. 7. " Yep that’s right, only 5* get Meyer’s ear and time this week.

Put me down as a SMQ supporter. I read every word on MGoBlog, and enjoy the poll and the UFR, but SMQ’s FMQ is the tits.

My question may be an incidental threadjack, but is Saban saying off-the-record lawya’ jokes or comments are ok so long as they are not original but are being repeated as they were first heard?
