WASSUP, SHORTY.
Greg Seamon of the Cincinnati Bengals on Troy Smith in the draft:
“Really, he’s not that fast,” Seamon said of Smith. “He gets run down by defensive ends. He’s not real big. He kind of stares down his targets. You didn’t see those breathtaking, thread-the-needle throws [against Florida] that you’d hope to see from a top-of-the-draft quarterback.”
Nope. The same process of devaluation began for Chris Leak, as well, when a fateful number was announced during the combine: Five feet, eleven inches and seven-tenths. Not officially being six feet tall, Leak may now begin putting in his application to CSTV, right? Why even try?
Smith: tends to stare, right?

I think Leak should go the doug flutie route. I heard Edmonton is need of a top flight game manager.

If the young man hadn’t had his pedicure and feet scraped for comfort, he may have had that 3/10ths of an inch.

Love it when The Begnals are mentioned in anything.
Troy Smith is at best a second day pick. The good news is that if he is a first day pick, it will be the Cleveland Browns. He will then get destoryed twice a year by my man crush, Robert Geathers.

How awesome would it be if JaMarcus Russell could become the next Ken Stabler? I really enjoy the constant reminders that he can throw the ball “85 yards while standing, 60 yards while kneeling, and 40 yards while sitting,”. From what I hear, throwing the ball while sitting down has become a very important skill for QBs hoping to make the transition to the NFL in recent years.
The NFL Draft is mostly a crapshoot. Every year there are plenty of overhyped busts and Marques Colstons. I know that NFL scouts and talent evaluators know far more about football and the available players’ potential than me but that doesn’t stop them from making a ton of mistakes. Just because Chris Leak or Troy Smith don’t get picked until the 6th round doesn’t mean they won’t have a successful NFL career (hello, Tom Brady) and going in the top 10 doesn’t mean surefire success (what’s up Ryan Leaf?). Click on my name for a link to a great series of articles by Michael David Smith breaking down the drafts of 98, 99, and 2000 now that enough time has gone by to judge the impact of the players who were drafted.
I do think it’s pretty goshdarned funny that Chris Leak’s draft status could rise or fall dramatically based on 1/8th of an inch. If only [NAME REDACTED] had gotten him started on those ‘hanging from a tree to make yourself taller’ exercises a little sooner…

Ummm…. go back and look at last year’s draft. There is maybe one real bust in the first round (Bobby Carpenter). Two gys lost to injury (Greenway & McCargo). Both Williams’s are the closest things to busts (DeAngelo with 1 TD and Mario with limited production), but neither were busts. I’d say the NFL did an incredible job this year. Could be the best 1st round ever with the three good QBs, a few great OLs, and some serious RBs.
