ERICKSON TO ASU. DRINKS ON HIM!

So what if he went 4-8 as the head coach of the Idaho Vandals, he's a hell of a great time at a party. Now that party is going on the road (so you may want to consider staying off them) to Tempe as Dennis Erickson is reportedly going to be the next coach of the Sun Devils.

A Vandal no more. I'll drink to that!

Just when Bama thought they had him, too.

And this is pretty funny:

Whipper Snapper Dept.:

Dennis Erickson is about as over-the-hill as Barry Switzer.

The rest of the Pac-10 is probably relaxing, knowing that DE will not have much success recruiting great players.

He should hire Bea Arthur as the quarterbacks coach. She’ll make Carpenter look way better than Keotter ever would.

Koetter. Well he’s fired and he wasn’t well-liked, so I can afford to spell his name incorrectly.

And by ‘look better’, she’ll end up making Rudy Carpenter look like an 80 year old man, but he’ll also be a better QB than he was this year.

This is the best part of the whole thing….

“Had we known that we were going to end up in this situation we would never have gone down that road,” Spear told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “We made a commitment and we thought we had a commitment from the other end, but I wish Dennis Erickson the best.”

Pretty much a big F U from the AD.

Whew! At least we know that Mike Price is still available for the Bama job. I was worried there for a second.

I was just wondering “What’s wrong with Arizona State? They have nice weather, beautiful women, and no identity. What are they missing?”

Apparently, their AD thinks the answer is “probation.”

Probation is teh hottness.

This should be in the newspaper classifieds or on Craigslist:

“Mid-major Division I-A school looking for head football coach.

Willing to get ass kicked in at least 75% of games.

Washed-up head coaches at major Division I-A schools are encouraged to apply. You know who you are.

Please send resumes to:

Rob Spear, Athletic Director
University of Idaho Athletics
P.O. Box 2302
Moscow, ID 83844"

captaineclectic:

Arizona State and Univ of AZ used to swoop into the Los Angeles area and grab a lot of talent. However, Pete C. of USC has been doing a heck of a job keeping the better players home. Even Mr. Personality, Karl Dorrell, has been bagging a few good ones here and there from Crenshaw HS in LA, for example.

And, when the higher rated players do decide to leave LA, they have not gone ot AZ, WA or Oregon like they used to, but have opted for programs elsewhere, such as Clausen to ND and the like….

by Stacy Keibler Loves Me on Dec 10, 2006 9:25 PM EST reply actions

DE wasn’t getting squat for money at UI. That didn’t matter, though, as he is still getting paid NOT to coach the 49ers. After next year, that changes.

Still, total dick move on the part of Erickson. ASU had better iron-clad its contract, because they are getting a full-on snake oil salesman for a HC.

The good news in all this for Idaho? Slappy’s still available, and he was at Idaho before going to Sparty.

by JD on Dec 10, 2006 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Is Vegas posting any odds on whether DE will recruit that former ASU cheerleader/“adult actress” to help lead the Sun Devils’ booster club?

by Geaux Irish on Dec 10, 2006 10:20 PM EST reply actions

SKLM,

Yeah, my post was mostly tongue-in-cheek. Obviously Pete’s the number one reason ASU’s having trouble. Still, you’d think they could have the odd nine win season every once in a while. Are they really that much worse than, say, Purdue?

by captaineclectic on Dec 10, 2006 11:49 PM EST reply actions

ASU’s AD used to work for USC; she must be the Manchurian AD for ASU. Plainly Carroll’s call to recommend Sarkisian was actually activating the “self-destruct” program.

by DC Trojan on Dec 11, 2006 12:13 AM EST reply actions

Ahh. “Sarkisian” was the trigger word. It forced hiring Erickson, which actually probably will destroy ASU. That’s a shame. If they get the death penalty, will Fresno State get to join the Pac-10?

by captaineclectic on Dec 11, 2006 12:21 AM EST reply actions

Say what you want about DE’s $200,000 a year salary at Idaho, that still buys a lot of hobo wine.

by Phil K. on Dec 11, 2006 1:09 AM EST reply actions

erickson may just drink enough he’ll end up meeting up with this chick.

by The Big Picture on Dec 11, 2006 4:22 AM EST reply actions

Remember captaineclectic, in ‘96 ASU would have won the championship if they hadn’t laid an egg against tOSU (I know, it was a while ago, but to use the same parallel, has Purdue gotten close lately?)- I think that it’s a program that can succeed, and every once in a while does. Now, is Drunken Dennis the one to give them a good year or 2? Maybe not, but I have heard that liquor sales have been down in AZ the last couple years, anything to boost the state’s economy.

I know Vince Young is in the NFL but I came across this quote from King’s column in si.com this morning:

“I felt like my mom was chasing me with a belt.’’
 — Tennessee quarterback Vince Young to owner Bud Adams, who asked him what he was thinking as he ran for the winning 39-yard touchdown in overtime over his hometown Texans.

Brian,
Wild Irish Rose is the worst wine ever created, and Mad Dog isn’t much better. I’m not likely to try any of the other Ghetto Wines, but then again, they could be right up Erickson’s alley.

bah. this is a town where the bishop killed a guy in a hit and run and got off. erickson will do just fine.

My first reaction: was the Bishop driving a Buick? (He was.)

My second reaction: what poor bugger did he hit? Someone who was walking home, plastered, in dark clothes.

Can anyone else see how Erickson’s new gig might end badly?

by DC Trojan on Dec 11, 2006 11:51 AM EST reply actions

I just love that the guy told his Idaho players that he felt he had a chance to win a national championship at ASU. First, who’s he kidding? Second, that’s supposed to make them feel better?
