RODRIGUEZ: TALKING WITH ALABAMA FOR 20 MINUTES. OR NINETY.

Rich Rodriguez talked with Alabama officials while he was in New York. What's talking?

"It was an informal meeting," Rodriguez, whose wife Rita sat in on the meeting as well, told ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel. The get-to-know-you get-together lasted "25, 30 minutes. How long did it last, Rita?"

"Ninety minutes," she said.

"Oh," Rodriguez said. "Well, we didn't talk about anything specific. We didn't talk about plans or facilities or anything."

This shows you that though he may be a red-hot coaching prospect and approaching the peak of his profession, his wife will still not allow him to tell a good story without public and accurate correction.

Rich: rich. But still married.

Rodriguez went on to say, “We didn’t talk about specifics. They didn’t even try to talk me into coming to Bama. What did we do, honey?”

“Mal Moore blew you and begged you to come coach at Bamma. It was hard to hear what he was saying with his mouth full of your manhood, but I think I heard something about ‘yellow hammer’ and if you don’t coach there, the next choice is the guy La. Tech fired.”

“Thank you honey. Now shut the fuck up and go burn a couch.”

Who’d of Thunk Dept:

Rodriguez may be able to control 100+ players and staffers on his squad with barely a blink of the eye…..

He may be able to have half of the people of W. Virginia down and doing push-ups in a second’s notice….

But he cannot have the little woman keep her trap shut while he spins for the media!

Amazing.

If this guy’s interested in Alabama, maybe I wasn’t so far off when I joked about him coming to Iowa State.

I’m pissed at my Clones. They passed up Coach Rod and Mike Ditka for the head job. And damn it, they already named the two coordinators, so my “Buddy Ryan and the Cyclone 46!!!!!” idea goes to shit too.

by j.j. on Dec 5, 2006 9:52 PM EST reply actions

dogtown,

I think that is possible. Not saying it won’t happen, but it’s hard to believe Rod would leave WV. He’s from there, he went to school there, his wife’s from there, everybody loves him there, he’s close to the players, and the list goes on and on. The only thing that may lure him is money…and surely WV is willing to give him a significant raise after all this courting by Bama. However, WV would never be able to match whatever Bama is willing to offer, but they may be able to balance the scales a little.

Rita Rodquez looks eerily similar to Lil from Squidbillies. And judging by the wardrobe, she’s handy with a Bedazzler. Should fit right at Tuscaloosa.

by Dinknflicka on Dec 5, 2006 10:13 PM EST reply actions

Another question. Since Jim Grobe (who was a crappy candidate in the first place) says he’s not leaving Wake Forest, if Bama doesn’t get Rich Rod, who do they get? I mean seriously, who else is there…besides the Johnson guy from Navy.

by Cardiac Kids on Dec 5, 2006 10:15 PM EST reply actions

As public as the Rodriguez thing has been to this point, with him actually going on the record and such with ESPN, I think he wants to take the job.

That does not mean that he will, though. I doubt the WVa admins will be what keeps him — it’d more likely be lobbying by his wife, family and other connections to the university.

On the other hand, that horse may have already have left the barn, considering the slamming Rod’s been taking from Mountaineer fans lately. For example, “RRod’s a lyng mothafucka” Not good should he decide to stay in Morgantown.

by Newspaper Hack on Dec 5, 2006 10:35 PM EST reply actions

Cardiac,
1) I don’t agree about Grobe – he’s a fantastic coach who gets the most out of his players. Unless you mean crappy candidate because he’s not leaving.

2) Mike Sherman, ex-Packer coach, has expressed interest I think. Hey, failed NFL coaches have a decent track record at Bama, and also, Pete Carroll. Plus, dude was willing to throw down with Warren Sapp; he’s got the toughness part.

3) The Gary wants to coach again. Gawdlettucehopenot.

Scott,

I thought it was Orgeron who called out Warren Sapp. I meant “crappy candidate” as in crappy candidate. The guy’s old (I’m guessing late 50’s, early 60’s) and he’s never had a really good team before this (that’s IF we’re saying Wake is a really good team playing in the miserable ACC). I believe there tiny dropoff from Spurrier/Saban to RR and a HUGE dropoff from RR to Grobe. I would say RR is top-notch and Grobe is 3rd tier. Before this year 99.9999% of the country didn’t know that guy from Adam’s shoe shiner.

However, with the bulk of the NCAA trauma past, he might be inclined…

Paul Johnson’s name is really prominent at NC State right now. If Bama wants him, they’d better act soon.

In hindsight, I think Coach Rod is wishing that he didn’t call a state-wide radio program and use the phrases “stay at WV” and “for the rest of my career” in the same sentence. Even if that is only what his “plan” was. But then again, hindsight is a bitch.

I also think that if the governor can force us to play the Fulmer Cup recipients every year, he can probably help to get the man what he wants.

Personally, I don’t know why ANYONE would want a job in which 6-6 seasons are an unforgivable offense. 4 coaches in 8 years is a bit excessive. I think that coaching at ’Bama would be like being the coach on Friday Night Lights.

Sad thing is that the admin at WVU doesn’t seem to be interested in doing anything more than what they have already done. I can’t speak as to what is going on in Rod’s rather large head at the moment, but the backlash against the administration will be nasty if they continue to do nothing.

Of course 6-6 is unforgivable as is losing four in a row (five total) to my beloved Auburn Tigers. I don’t blame them a bit.

You’re from West Virginia. How are y’all not in the same boat? I guess football just doesn’t define your worth as a person up there the way it does down here.

Reports vary on what actually went down. The consensus is that Beamer felt the AD wasn’t supporting the program as well as they should be, in particular with respect to the assitants and coordinators many of whom have been at VT for a long (decades plus) time which is a large part of VT’s success. The AD didn’t try too hard and so Beamer was looking at UNC. Supposedly that deal was all but done, down to a verbal agreement from Frank to UNC, however friends, family and his staff talked him out of sealing the deal and into sticking with VT, literally in the last few hours. The admin ponied up, big raises for all the staff and a much stronger contract and commitment to facilities, etc.

This all happened in 2000, which to put it in context was the year after Michael Vick had generated a tremendous amount of buzz about our program, Tech had played for the MNC, etc so Beamer’s concerns were warranted – the program was turning in incredible results and the compensation wasn’t congruent with that.

We’ve now just finished a major stadium expansion including our high tech field (a first in college), expanded facilities to help with recruiting etc. Thanks in part to Beamer very nearly moving to UNC.

Folks now look back on it as being just a ploy to get all that but at the time he was very serious and very nearly gone.

Been to Lane Stadium a few times including this year. What makes it a high tech stadium? It doesn’t stand out to the casual fan, compared to (not chosen at random) Florida Field.

Stephen,

Mid January thru the beginning of April is consumed w/ basketball seaseon. Of course now that we’re Pittsnoggle-less, we’ll see how long that lasts.

All I’m saying is that Alabama has proven that it is an unforgiving place to coach and I personally don’t find that appealing. I also paruse this and other college football blogs for a considerable portion of my workday, so job security ranks high on my list of priorities.

by CouchBurnin'Girl on Dec 6, 2006 12:49 PM EST reply actions

It’s actually the field that’s high tech. During the start of the 2000 season we were set to play Georgia Tech in one of those pre-season benefit games (I think this one was for the Black Coaches Alliance). But before the game could start a massive storm blew through town and dumped several inches of rain in a matter of minutes along with a severe lighting storm (famously zapping Corso’s car right after he picked against us for year). The game was cancelled and the field which had about a foot of water on it was trashed. I’ve never been outside in a rain storm like that before, the stands were turned into waterfalls, it was inredible.

After that it was decided that we needed a new field that could cope with extreme weather so Tech invested in a modular tray field which is plumbed for pumps to rapidly remove water in the event of a storm. It’s also got built in irrigation and the roots can be heated to prolong the growing season to keep the field green late into the season. The field actually consists of a number of trays about a foot deep arranged on an asphalt tarmac underneath. The trays can be individually removed and replaced in the event that a section becomes damaged or gets a disease, etc. At the time we were the first college to have such a field which is being used at a couple of pro venues. Since then a couple of other schools have installed a similar system IIRC but it’s still pretty unique.

The ritzy field lets us grow Bermuda turf in an area that it wouldn’t normally grow and apparently that’s the preferred playing surface since it can be cut super short to make it play very fast, and even in inclement weather the surface remains very safe. A literal home field advantage :-)

Song for Rich Rodriguez to sing

Almost winter in West Virginia
Getting’ cold here, but it’s warm in Alabama
Football’s old there, older than the sea
They’ve canned another coach and now they want to hire me

Private jet, take me down
To that old Southern town
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Take me there, private jet

All their boosters are writin’ checks out
Made out to ‘Bama to help out with my buyout
The thought of leavin’ my alma mater sucks
But you can buy a hell of a trailer with 21 million bucks

Private jet, take me down
To that old Southern town
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Take me there, private jet

I hear Mal Moore, on my mobile phone he calls me
From a New York City hotel where he’ll meet me right away
And driving to the airport I know I should have taken their cash
Yesterday, yesterday

Private jet, take me down
To that old Southern town
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Take me there, private jet

Sports reporters gather ‘round us
Rita tells ‘em we met for 90 minutes
That woman talks a lot, but I don’t give a damn
She’ll be quiet when she sees that mall in Birmingham

Private jet, take me down
To that old Southern town
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Take me there, private jet

Back in Morgantown, all the message boards abuse me
The radio is holdin’ out the hope that I will stay
But I’m already thinkin’ ‘bout how Auburn’s gonna defend
The read option play, option play

Basketball? I think I remember that. Auburn played it for two years when Chris Porter was in school but the team was disbanded when he left. Now we just play one game a year so Alabama’s student body president can deliver the ODK trophy for the Iron Bowl.

I did hear that Miami used to use it as a recruiting evaluator for football.

I agree that I wouldn’t take the Bama job either. I could take the pressure but always being number two in their hearts no matter how well you did would really suck. It’s an ego thing.

In response to the fools that say they wouldn’t take the Bama job. It’s like 2-3 million dollars a year…yeah it would suck if you sucked and your ego may be bruised, but there is one solution to that: DON’T SUCK. And if there is nothing that you can do to not suck, then take the 4 million when you’re fired and coach a high school team.

For those feeling sorry for Shula…from what I understand the guy was told to make changes and he told his bosses to shove it. He had numerous second chances to not suck.

My feelings exactly, CBG. I’m glad I didn’t piss off any Bama fans with my first post (comparing the appeal of the Bama job to ISU’s opening), and I know ISU’s history is nothing next to Bama’s, but our fan base is very forgiving. Bama will pay better and be a much higher profile position, but I guess I’m the type who prefers job security.

by j.j. on Dec 6, 2006 6:16 PM EST reply actions

I will agree with you on the forgiving point. If a team has never won anything the fans tend to not expect a whole lot. But the old timers in Bama remember the glory days and unfortunately those are the people in power at this moment. Mike Shula did a good job for the position they were in but, he was not the guy to carry them into the future.
All that being said, If you have been to UA recently and seen all the new facilities you know everything is there to be a power house program again.
The next coach , whoever it is will be able to win NOW.
If you saw any of there games this year at all you know they have some athletes. Swindle and the boys would have to admit early in their game with UA it was not pretty and it looked like the beating from the year before was going to be continued.
But credit to the Urban Legend he made adjustment and turned it around and got the win.
Bottom line the Tide will Role Again.
Either with or with out the RR.
