RODRIGUEZ TO ALABAMA? BELIEVE NOTHING.
The latest dubious, hold-at-arms-length-with-tongs Bama rumor: Rodgriguez goes to Tuscaloosa. As in most rumors, the deal's done, the patsies have been iced, and your shadowy, conspiracy-ridden worldview has been confirmed. If you have a headache, it's just a chip in your head. Might want to get that looked at.
Brian's all over it, too, though cautiously so.
No one's sourcing shit, so as usual, caveat gossiptor.

Bama's spokesman had no comment.

We’ll put a new meaning to the ‘Rich’ part. It’ll probably be more like 2,500,000 for 10 years.

10 years at Bama???
Now that’s a laugher.
10 years is 3-4 coaches for the Crim5on Tide.

In all honesty, why would Bama want him. It reminds me of Hoosiers when the coach comes in and changes everything and is gone if not for a hot shot savant that won’t play unless the coach stays.
I don’t think he’s going anywhere, but if he does go, half your team will quit or be encouraged to leave bacause if you’re a lineman and can’t run, you’re gone. See 2001 WVU as a reference.

Ha, unfortunately our linemen can neither block nor run. However our right tackle does a wicked impression of a NYC subway turnstile.

And your wide recievers better be able to block like demons. (I’m looking at you, Antonio Brown)

I personally hope they don’t sign a new coach until after February 7. At that point, I don’t care who it is, but they need to take their time and not rush into things.
My guess is they end not getting any of the pipe dreams that have the Bama fans creaming themselves right now. I heard that they’re still working on that reincarnation thing, hoping it works in time for signing day.

I don’t know who it’s gonna be, but I think it’s been a done deal for a couple of weeks.
Coaching search is a sham, and it’s the only explanation for Shula not being allowed to coach in the bowl game (if there is one). I think they introduce the new coach Monday because he’s coaching a game somewhere this weekend.
Even Coker gets that.

Haven’t you heard? Rich Rod only agreed to the deal after talking Pat White into transferring to Bama (his home state).
by Lawboy on Nov 28, 2006 3:36 PM EST reply actions
I think most Bama folks would be happy with Rodriguez, if nothing else because he has performed consistently over some time. All this talk of getting Grobe from Wake or the Rutgers coach is absurd – the only other college coach who I would really put any effort into wooing is Paul Johnson from Navy. At least the lapses in discipline would get fixed pretty quick…
Why hasn’t anyone brought up David Cutcliffe yet? Get an alum at the controls AND sandbag UT all at once.

‘Bama should take it’s time an just get the best guy out there. Is Gruden a possibility at all? I think he’d be great on the college level.
My dream candidate for Alabama would be Karl Dorrell. Of course, I have the misfortune of being a UCLA fan.

I don’t know if y’all know, but Bama’s spokesman was the reason the Bills can’t win a Super Bowl.
Anyway, if I had a bet, I’d say Mal Moore fucks this one up, too.
by Newspaper Hack on Nov 28, 2006 4:04 PM EST reply actions
Alabama should quit screwing around and just hire Jay Paterno already. I mean, come on. He’s the son of a coaching legend, what could go wrong?
by Run Up The Score on Nov 28, 2006 4:11 PM EST reply actions
Yes Mal Moore stinks. Hey Ozzie, Mama’s calling….
I don’t know if I want Rodriguez’s offense in T-Town. He’ll turn JPW into another shartastic qb like Leak.

I love how Wooderson always thinks of me… he must know I’m hot.
I don’t like it when CFB gossip fucks with my day. Just going to work this morning did that. Now I’ve spent the last 2+ hours (off and on) trying to find out if this is even a possibility.
Good thing I didn’t apply myself before the season started… otherwise I’d be looking pretty foolish right about now.
by CouchBurnin'Girl on Nov 28, 2006 4:45 PM EST reply actions
Sorry bubba, but your Bear reference to “Mama” making a call to anybody can arguably sum up why the Alabama job is not the ultimate coaching destination many Bama fans think it is, unless of course the coach happens to come from Pullman, Washington or a non-BCS conference.
by Mark on Nov 28, 2006 4:50 PM EST reply actions
Spurrier will be the head coach at Bama next year, he will give up the play calling duties to his OC Rich Rodriguez, his DC will be Pete Carroll, the special teams coach will be Frank Beamer. If you can name the other assisstants let me know.

I heard that Mal Moore has asked Bobby Lowder to come in and help with the search….
by baconboy on Nov 28, 2006 5:50 PM EST reply actions
Hey, I’m no Bama basher. I’m an alum. I’m a crossin’ my fingers and a hopin’ that Rich Rod can work his magic on Steve Slaton and get him to transfer, too. That would kick azz!
by Lawboy on Nov 28, 2006 5:55 PM EST reply actions
Cutliffe would be a fantastic choice. He’s obviously a good OC, has head coaching experience in the SEC, and it really would hurt UT at the same time.
by JohnWA on Nov 28, 2006 5:58 PM EST reply actions
…that’s totally unfair NewAZTiger!
10 years is 5 coaches, not 3 or 4, at Bama.
Stallings, out in 1996.
Dubose was dismissed in 2000
Franchione left in 2002
Price was dismissed in May 2003
Shula in November 2006.

Run Up the Score (#15),
That was funny. And then I thought about it for a couple of seconds, and it was even funnier. Thank you.
Seriously, is it that bad when you cannot get a coach from South Florida (and I’m talking about Bama AND Miami)? Let’s pretend for a moment. What if the guy at Nebraska was ousted after the season. Would it be that hard to replace him? I know Alabama has had a rough decade or so, but the state of the program is much more revivable now than it was 4 years ago.
by Cardiac Kids on Nov 28, 2006 8:40 PM EST reply actions
Cutcliffe is not a good choice. He could fall over with a heart attack at any time. He’s the Dick Cheney of NCAA football. All he ever had were a couple of choke monsters known as the Manning boys, plus Bama wants nothing that has worn that putrid orange, even a former alum
by rammerjammer on Nov 28, 2006 9:12 PM EST reply actions

Why would anyone in their right mind take that job, especially when there are plenty of other high-paying jobs open. Why take $2 mil at Bama, deal with all those headaches – the potential for a breakaway sect of Bama fans to raise zombie Bear, a Jeff Bowden-esque offense, tempting secretaries that wear thigh-highs. God, give me Arizona State.
by NoleinTexas on Nov 29, 2006 9:34 AM EST reply actions
Do secretaries in Bama wear thigh highs?
Everybody loves to make cracks about Bama living in the 70’s, reincarnating bear and all that crap that might have been funny befor 1995. Now it’s the rest of the country that is living in Bama’s past.
Look at the last five coaches we’ve had.
Stallings did great, except for the sanctions.
Dubose, won the SEC then tanked. Any school would have fired him.
Fran ran b/c his 9 NFL caliber linemen were graduating and didn’t want to stick around for additonal punishment form the NCAA.
Price would have been fired by anyone else.
Shula won ten games b/c of a great defense. Anyone who has watched Bama the last four years knows that there has been zero improvement. in his playcalling or overall headcoaching ability.
You mocked him for being a child in a man’s game but now we’re unrealistic for firing him.
We cannot do worse.
It seems like our critics are still mad about the 70’s. I dont’ know a single Bama fan who brings up Bryant unless someone else starts talking about the past.
Now, I hope Mal Moore can find someone with head coaching experience at any level to get paid two million a year.

“I dont’ know a single Bama fan who brings up Bryant unless someone else starts talking about the past. " – Bamabuck
Hey Bamabuck, I guess those were all Auburn fans wearing the houndstooth print hats, shirts ties, skirts, etc that I saw on TV at the Iron Bowl.
by sevenDs on Nov 29, 2006 10:41 AM EST reply actions
Ok good point.
But wearing houndstooth, which had become an unofficial, official color is not the same as expecting Bryant like results.
In the past few years Florida, Georgia, ND, Texas A&M all fired coaches with better records than Shula. Were they obsessed with the past?
I’m tired of everyone attributing every decision we make to an obsession with the past, when it’s quite the opposite.
by bama_buck on Nov 29, 2006 11:50 AM EST reply actions
Thanks bama_buck (#34,36) finally someone’s seeing and talking reality for Alabama.
Sure we loved Bear, but c’mon, he’s not what we’re talking about now. The qualities Bear had, like pride, dedication, and a winning spirit, aren’t they qualities anyone would want in a head coach?
The houndstooth is our fans’ remembrance of those qualities.
I think Bama fans (like any college fans would hope for their own team) are just hoping for a coach that has those qualities, and can light the fire and get the Tide rolling again.
(Not, for example, someone who won’t go for it on 4th and goal from the 1.)
