Hey, they stole it fair and square hundreds of years ago. Plus, they then created the proto-redneck with Scottish settlers who subsequently went to America so they could fight with one another over ACC and SEC rankings. That’s a real record of historical achievement and I think a small corner of the Emerald Isle is due compensation.
Seriously though, the smart option for the British Government would have been, after the 1916 uprising, to have shot Eamonn DeValera when they had the chance, told the Ulstermen that they were getting free passage to Scotland, and turned the whole of Ireland loose at once. That would have at least given the Irish a chance of not being a third world country gripped by the priests until the 70s — what a waste of talent and potential.

Moving on, AUAlum is correct. West Virginia voted red in both 2000 and 2004. That said, WV has 2 dem. senators and traditionally elect a dem governor.
It is also interesting to note that WV is the only state in the nation that was not officially made a state by normal constitutional procedures (i.e., ratification by 2/3 of the states). WV applied to Congress for statehood – a request which was granted and approved by Abe Lincoln provided the state constitution abolished slavery.
Which worked out for the best b/c black people want to live in WV anyway.

Big East OOC Div I-A Record: 26-8
SEC Total OOC Record: 33-7
Big East Total OOC Record: 32-8
To help you out with the simple math, that means that Big East and SEC have faced the same number of Div-I OOC opponents (34), and the SEC has beaten 1 more than the Big East. This is while the two have faced the SAME number (40) of OOC opponents, before you start complaining of conference size. Before you start making generalizations, check the facts.

Out of all of the D-I conferences with which the Big East conference teams have played 50 or more games, the record against the SEC(67-111-11 for 38%) is second only to the Big Ten(147-324-19 for 32%) as the losingest. This is all time, not since the creation of the conference in 1991, but it demonstrates the type of power we’re talking about here. By the way, over 60% of those 189 games were played against Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. Impressive competition.
The Big East has had several wins in the past couple of years, mostly against bottom rung SEC teams, but we can see the quality of the present makeup of the Big East by looking at their pitiful record against the SEC.
