REGGIE NELSON ON MARTREZ MILNER KENNETH HARRIS: WE ALL GOT IT COMIN', KID.

Mancrush unabated, we present still more reason why everyone except Martrez Milner Kenneth Harris loves Reggie Nelson.

Cheap shot? Fair hit? Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

Any men don't wanna get killed better clear on out the back.

FYI That is Kenneth Harris and not Martrez Milner. I would say that leans toward a cheap hit but they are playing football and that is what happens in football. Man I am glad I am American and love football and not soccer.

PS Could you show the clip of Leak getting killed on the option if it is out there.

by adam on Oct 31, 2006 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Pain. Pure, delicious pain.

It was a perfectly legal hit as Stafford caught his own pass morphing the down into a running play.

Nelson was allowed, nay obligated, to [maul, disembowel, eviscerate, etc.] the poor, defenseless widdle Jaw jaw player.

Did I mention fifteen of seventeen? If not, fifteen of seventeen.

Two quotes that made a bad weekend a little better

“Welcome to what used to be called the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” The introductory phrase given by Verne Lundquist at the very beginning of CBS’ coverage of the game. Well done, Verne. Though I think now we have to hold you responsible for that kid’s death this year. Saying cocktail party is akin to the whole “candyman” or “biggee smalls” thing, if you say it, someone will obviously have to die.

“It reminded me of Saturdays back in Knoxville” Peyton Manning after the Colts’ late victory over the Broncos in Denver. He was referring to the game atmosphere. One of the supposedly loudest and most intense NFL venues during a big time match up “reminds” Peyton of Knoxville. SEC stadiums are the toughest to play in out of any conference.

by matt on Oct 31, 2006 5:10 PM EST reply actions

There’s little doubt that hits of this sort are both (1) perfectly legal and (2) cheap shots. I can’t help but think that they have an effect—Florida’s pass D has a lot of talent, but it is no doubt better than the sum of its parts, probably due to Nelson’s willingness to make these sorts of hits.

I’m a little confused about Nelson, to be honest—I think he’s legit, but every time the guy gets hype it’s over a play like this, where he steamrolls a guy that isn’t looking. It doesn’t seem to me like it’s all that big a deal—as a general rule, when you hit an opposing player who is looking the other way, he’ll go flying. I guess it’s fun for announcers, but the only thing special about it is his willingness to make the hit in that situation, which most other DBs won’t do—but whether that is down to sportsmanship or lack of bottle is a different matter altogether.

To me—and, of course, I am a Dawg—what Thomas Davis or Greg Blue did was much more impressive. They would regularly face up to an opposing player and knock him the other direction. Often (particularly in the case of Blue) this happened at the expense of proper technique, and occasionally it resulted in missed tackles, but when it came off it was sweet to see.

you bet your ASS it’s a cheap shot. and you’d say it was if it happened to one of your guys.

I hope it hasn’t gone unnoticed that two plays later, Georgia scored a TD anyway.

I’ll say this, Kenneth Harris didn’t wine like the football version of A-Rod about “maybe” being concussed after the hit. So I put it to the Florida folks: A-Rod=Chris Leak? Record-setting numbers but never when it really counts, and not exactly inspiring?

by Will on Oct 31, 2006 6:18 PM EST reply actions

You’re right matt, we would be saying it was a cheap shot, and if your boys delivered it you’d be saying it was the most badass thing since electricity, seeing as that runs your vibrator- it’s football, and it’s legal. Get over it.

by italiangator on Oct 31, 2006 6:22 PM EST reply actions

Hey, Kenneth Harris you need to “get to the choppa!” — Reggie Nelson, the single best reason to quote “Predator.”

by Socraticsilence on Oct 31, 2006 6:33 PM EST reply actions

Solon, maybe you were in Jax, but in any event Nelson’s rage is more apparent in person, when you can see how amazingly he is able to cover the whole field. It’s not just the hits… before the snap on that particular play he was out in the parking lot making sweet love to Stafford’s girlfriend, and he made it back in time to make a play.

by Ltrain on Oct 31, 2006 7:05 PM EST reply actions

I guess Reggie should have tapped Kenneth on the shoulder and gained his attention before knocking the shit out him. It’s like I tell my kid, “Pay attention son”.

italiangator -

i don’t even understand what the hell that means.

you know what else is football? linemen picking up quarterbacks and throwing them on their heads after the whistle. robert reynolds choking someone in the pile. linebackers twisting a knee out of joint after the play. helmet-swinging brawls. but those get the adrenaline flowing in mouthbreathers such as yourself, so i guess they’re okay.

dumbfuck.

by matt on Oct 31, 2006 8:14 PM EST reply actions

Looks to me like it was legal and most likely unnecessary. But then again, so are things like dual outboards, potato guns, and almost everything about “Mythbusters” from the explosions down to Kari’s snug-fitting T-shirts.

I think Will Munny actually says “Any MAN don’t wanna get killed better clear on out the back.” If you can compile more Nelson hits like that, you could caption it “…I’ve always been lucky when it comes to killin’ folks.”

And…I expect to see some of that action against the fragile receivers wearing the winged helmets on 11/18.

The last play before halftime Reggie Nelson lines up in super prevent defense in the 22nd row in the south endzone. Georgia runs the ball, guess who makes the tackle.

by beatAuburn on Nov 1, 2006 7:40 AM EST reply actions

BTW, in case any of you ever played football, it is drilled into you (no pun intended) that, if the ball is not yet in the air and a receiver comes across your face you are to plant him on his ass. It is not a cheap shot, it is pure old school football…….

by Judge on Nov 1, 2006 8:05 AM EST reply actions

Doug love Matt and vice versa. The dogs are not news worthy any longer.

Mark Richt = Ray Goff Got to love those mediocre coaches coaching mediocre teams.

Good luck to the dogs playing FSU in the Weedeater Bowls.

Damn, matt, are you that uga hittee’s sister? It was a legal hit, you might not do the same if you were RFN… but he’s playin’ and you, obviously, are not.

I don’t love Doug. We are “special friends” that happen to love our Dawgs (and kitty’s too).

I guess you boys are right. Legal, Late Hit, whatever…we deserve whatever we get at this point. Heck, we lost to Vandy for goodness sakes!

We’d be lucky to be in the Weedeater Bowl Jason. I’ve made love to Doug and now I’m in a much better mood. Sorry for the bad language also. I need a Virginia Slim..

by Matt on Nov 1, 2006 9:00 AM EST reply actions

Solon in #7,

“but every time the guy gets hype it’s over a play like this, where he steamrolls a guy that isn’t looking.”

Actually, Nelson’s hype was solidified against UT this year. Erik Aingle threw the ball deep three times:

1st play of game. Reggie Nelson on the interception.
2nd quarter. Incomplete with Reggie Nelson and Reggie Lewis combining on the break-up.
Last offensive play of game. Reggie Nelson on the interception.

The guy has single-handedly freaked out SEC offensive coordinators who are now loathe to go down the middle of the field.

by DHC on Nov 1, 2006 9:02 AM EST reply actions

It absolutely does not matter how you classify the hit. Georgia’s receivers would have dropped ANY pass thrown their way. Reggie could have set up a pike and impaled him on the 50 yard line and taken the penalty. IT WOULD NOT MATTER.

by matt on Nov 1, 2006 12:23 PM EST reply actions

OhioDawg,

Milner, at least, was catching passes until Nelson atomized him on the sideline following a reception.

Following that hit, he resembled a larger version of Terence Edwards.

zzgator,

That’s the same WR that Nelson reduced to a quivering mass of bone and tissue in the 2005 game, right?

by DHC on Nov 1, 2006 12:27 PM EST reply actions

You can say 15 for 17 all you want (and I’m sure you will), but saying “Mark Richt = Ray Goff” is just plain dumb.

by Rickdog on Nov 1, 2006 12:27 PM EST reply actions

Fair enought, Rickdog. But we do have the following empirical evidence:

Goff. One victory over Florida. Homecoming loss to Vanderbilt.
Richt. One victory over Florida. Homecoming loss to Vanderbilt.

zzgator,

Well done, well done. The internet is a wondrous thing.

Hate to keep beating this dead horse (who am I kidding, I LOVE beating this dead horse), but RFN’s hit allowed me the opportunity to explain the following to my 7-year old twins:

If the opponent’s upper body hits the ground before the lower body, then look around for #1 for the Gators who will be close by …. smiling.

by DHC on Nov 1, 2006 2:58 PM EST reply actions

RFN is Greg Blue with cover skills.

by JG on Nov 1, 2006 3:31 PM EST reply actions

DHC – I can’t get too enthusiastic about ragging on college athletes (despite my prior post!), but the UGA receiving corps this year is just awful.

The two leading receivers are tied @ 17 a piece. I know they have had rotating qbs, but Milner alone could be over 20 if he just caught the catchable balls on Saturday.

I think it would be ok to say a guy fell apart after a big hit if the team didn’t have aspirations of winning the SEC or a BCS bowl. That’s not the case at UGA.

I’d say there’s always next year, but the offensive line looks like it will be even worse!

Go Dawgs!

DHC, thanks for piling on. Rickdog….first shouldn’t it be rickdawg like your other illiterate friends? Second, you will soon hear the chants of old. Instead of “keep Ray Goff”, you will start hearing “keep Mark Richt”. Of course these cheers will come from other dominant SEC teams!

…beaten by Vandy at home…

by The Don on Nov 1, 2006 5:29 PM EST reply actions

  1. Thanks for being a good sport Matt. I for one am glad to see an inpired football player like RFN. Maybe if we had one, we’d be talking about big hits instead of justifying our loss to VANDY AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Big Dawg on Nov 1, 2006 5:36 PM EST reply actions

Perhaps the best part of these hits, interceptions and general intimidation is Reggie F. Nelson lacks prototypical NFL safety size.

Perhaps he will return next year for more fun and mayhem?

I hope so. UF hasn’t had a true enforcer patrolling the deep middle since Lawrence Wright in ’96. Corey Bailey and Kyle Jackson, bless their hearts, were simply not up to the challenge.

One further question: what would happen if Nelson attempted to (gasp!) tackle Tim Tebow? Would life as we know it cease to exist?

by DHC on Nov 1, 2006 6:06 PM EST reply actions

Yeah Don, they will be coming from our fans… you’re an idiot.

First, I’d compare Reggie much more to Snoop, ’specially the hair. And Snoop scares me more than The Orgeron.

Second, and nothin’ personal Rickdog:
Reggie: “You want it to be one way. You want it to be one way.”
Rickdog: “Stop sayin’ that!”
Reggie: “But it isn’t. It’s tha other way.”

Reggie laid that guy out after a tipped ball while the play was still live. Once the ball is tipped, any UGA player on the field is fair game and I LOVE that Reggie took the chance to remind Harris not to come across the middle. Football is intimidation and Reggie is one of the best.
