NCAA BREAKS TREND, MAKES RATIONAL RULING
The NCAA makes a surprisingly rational and humane decision. Mark your calendars, since it will only happen again when arbitrary rules are spiked arbitrarily under media pressure.

The most human thing the NCAA has done for years.

The sad thing is that it actually is a surprising decision. First time the NCAA has shown some common sense…ever?

So who has an article from a credible news source?

bitterness towards the NYT from the AU eagles for blowing the cover on rampant academic fraud under tommyt

Kinda like how bammers are bitter at the Dallas Morning News for pointing out that Croyle and Closner got 6 graduate level credit hours for a 5 page paper.
The NYT has had multiple scandals in the past 3 years (Can you say Jayson Blair, Judith Miller, Ahmad Chabali, Online Photo Fraud) that put it’s credibility slightly above the National Enquirer’s.

Oh, and here’s a link from a credible source.

Good for the NCAA, but when Ohio University basketballer Delvar Barrett was going through a similar situation four years ago, OU boosters were advised that they could not help out the family without jeopardizing Barrett’s eligibility.

(Now that I’ve dug up this old link, I’ll have to see what happened to Barrett. I hope he got his degree.)

It is remarkably sensible of the NCAA — perhaps this same spirit wil motivate them to change the timekeeping rules back. That said, I would have been just as happy if Tommy Bowden had not offered this nugget to the Times:
"I mean, big-time football is a serious business, a multimillion-dollar business, and I thought a little kid running around would be a distraction," Bowden said.
It is, of course that kind of business, but it would be nice to see the coach at least pay lipservice to the idea of the scholar-athlete who participates in football as an extracurricular activity.

Auburn fans need to stop being pissed at the NYT and start being pissed at themselves. They allowed the scandal to happen
by NoleinTexas on Sep 13, 2006 1:48 PM EDT reply actions
Keep your fingers crossed for them. I can’t imagine the pressure of competing in D1 football, trying to get your degree, raising your kid brother, and trying to help your parents.
Kid’s got himself some cajones.

SEC boosters all over are now looking to get players parents hooked on crack so they can funnel extra benefits to the recruits.

Score one for Ray Ray. And leave him alone about the name, his mom was on crack when she named him. Geez. Owww, too far?

“SEC boosters all over are now looking to get players parents hooked on crack so they can funnel extra benefits to the recruits.”
Wait, you think there are SEC players who’s parents AREN’T already on crack and getting benefits?

Mark, Shula is trying to figure out how he can pay Juwanna under this new rule since he already has a drug and gun problem.
by NewAZTiger on Sep 13, 2006 2:11 PM EDT reply actions
Besides, he’s “Ramon”, but goes by Ray Ray.
This coming from a grown man for whom people have no idea what my real name is. Nicknames stick.
Nice to see a GOOD precedent being set… for once.
Of course, for consistency sake, the NCAA will probably try to ban the ND Leprachaun by grumbling "it’s the only way to get those Lucky Charms.

SI credible? These are the same folks that freely pay The Leathery Handbag for whatever it is that she does.

Following up on post #7, my OU friends tell me that Barrett graduated, is working as a pharmacy technician, and continues to care for his mother. He’s also featured on this year’s edition of the “Character Counts” school planners used in many schools around the country.

Fulmer Cup points for South Carolina. “QB” Blake Mitchell just turned himself into cops for punching a bouncer at a bar last night.

During his last two years of college at Syracuse, Donovan Darius cared for his two younger brothers full-time in an apartment in Syracuse, and still managed to be a 2-time All Big East selection.

The name of the place was Pavlov’s, where whenever they ring a bell, you knock the shit out of the guy to your right!

Blake Mitchell hit a guy? I’m guessing the recepient wasn’t a South Carolina receiver. The punch would have landed 5 yards behind him.
by white-boned demon on Sep 13, 2006 3:44 PM EDT reply actions
File under completely unsubstantiated rumors, but Blake is a fixture at Pavlov’s and has tried several times to instigate fights according to some USC students I know. Last night was $2 drink night, so I can’t fully blame the guy for being fightin drunk.
But apparently he’s under tons of stress, so it’s okay: http://southcarolina.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=1825&tid=78996417&sid=&style=2

Fulmer Cup is only for the offseason.
It’s the Bowden Cup during the season.

I can help him with that problem.

Does anyone else think the NCAA is waiting to screw this guy or Clemson down the road?
They are the older brother who have been constantly stealing the ball from you while you are playing basketball. They finally let you take a shot and then swat it out of there.
I think everyone wishing him well on a blog is a secondary violation according to the NCAA.
