TOUGH START FOR PAC 10 CONTINUES
If your not in LA, its been a tough start to the season for the Pac 10. Oregon State continued that trend last night getting manhandled on the smurf turf by Boise State. At least the Pac 10 hasn’t been shut out by a D-I-AA team yet this season.

DC says:
The Pac 10 is a joke. They are slowly switching places with the Big East as the doormat conference. That being said, USC is still a beast of a team that should stay good for a long while. They have a good setup out there: great recruiting opportunities, conference schedule is favorable for keeping players fresh and healthy prior to Bowl game and great alumni support. It would be interesting to see how they would fare in a more competitive conference (see SEC, Big 10, ACC) for an entire season though.

I’m pretty sure USC would continue to be number one regularly. They still beat up on everyone regardless of conference even though Vince Young, I mean Texas, beat them last year.

Duke’s probably going to get blasted by Wake. There’s like…eight people enrolled at Wake Forest and they can still put together a team that beats the snot out of Duke (OK, upon review, the ‘04 game was a squeaker, but other recent games have been pretty ugly).
You know, I recall sitting in Wallace Wade in 2001 and watching Duke get destroyed by Northwestern. My solace? “The Wake game is at home…” Cue a few weeks later, I’m in WW again looking at a 42-35 scoreboard (in favor of Wake, of course), and muttering, “What’s worse?”
I’ll tell you what’s worse than losing the Wake game by a close margin: being so defeated and pessimistic that you’re pretty sure the ‘06 version of said game is over before it started.
/punish me for being a whiney and overdramatic fan, karma…let Duke win on Saturday

Raider Red, as a farsighted person I do like how they confine the nearsighted to the tiny endzone stands.

God I love that stadium. Bakc when you could pick which field you wanted to play on in NCAA FB, I always picked Brono Field. How can you NOT like the blue turf. it’s such a flagrant advantage. especially since their uniforms match the turf. I bet it’s a bitch to try and see the players runnign around though.

SeaTrojan says:
Wooderson, I do appreciate the endearingly non-cookie cutter aspects of the stadium. NCAA FB would be much poorer without it. It’s just so easy to make fun of. I wonder if they leave the end zone stands up in Spring to add more drama to the 400m relays.

I can see why people like it. I always saw it as a novelty and enjoyed using it in video games because it was funny. I can’t imagine actually wanting to play on it in real life.

An entire week goes by, and not a single word on the greatest upset in college football. I am speaking of UW LaCrosse smack down of South Dakota State. A Division III school took a punk wannabe D I-AA program to the wood shed.
Shouldn’t the loss permanently drop South Dakota State to Division II?

My only question about the smurf turf is how the hell the Boise grad assistants who break down the film can see the players from the overhead endzone view.
Those little splashes of orange on the sleeves of the Broncos jerseys can’t help out that much.

Actually I’d say the PAC-10 now is sort of like the ACC used to be in the early 90’s.
1 dominant team USC – FSU followed by 9 other teams who are a tier and a half below them.

Those beasts from BSU were extremely disrespectful to the Beavers. I could have sworn that somebody on the OSU sideline blew an assault whistle near the end of the 3rd quarter. Those Broncos had poor character; they kept pushing around those defensless guys with callous disregard for their health.
The Pac 10 has two serious teams (USC and Oregon); that’s it. The rest of the conference gets pushed around by the monsters at schools like UC Davis, Boise State, and San Jose St.

oc phil says:
Other than the SEC, what conference has more than 2 “serious” teams?
The Big 1O has tOSU and Michigan (with PSU taking Michigan’s spot last year).
The ACC has maybe Virginia Tech, though they have not been in MNC contention for awhile. FSU has 40 something yards rushing for the season and one of the games was against Troy? That’s major suckage. Miami lost to FSU, so they are a step further back.
The Big East is still the Big East. It’s a shame we won’t know how good the couch burners really are since they don’t play anybody. But nobody besides them and Louisvile could come close to being considered serious.
The Big XII has Texas and maybe Oklahoma on the way back (but they lost to a Pac 10 school last year and have looked weak this year) and also maybe Nebraska is on the way back (but let’s see how they look against USC, they could win that game or they could also get crushed like Arkansas).
And for every Stanford or Oregon State embarassment, it is easy to point at a Northwestern, or a Vandy or a Duke, or….

sure Michigan beat PSU, but they had a medicre year overall. And PSU looks likely to slip back into the middle of the pack again this year.
I don’t consider Iowa to be at the elite level but they are close. How long has it been since they were in realistic contention for a MNC at the end of the year?
Overall I see the Pac 10 and Big 10 as pretty simmilar from year to year and the Pac 10 team usually wins the Rose Bowl.
I certainly don’t care enough to get upset at the Stanford/SDSU result. I’ve got a news flash for you father figure, the celler dwellers in every conference are not very good. It’s not like Stanford lost to a 1AA team like some other teams this weekend.
