Here's the BC Gonzo 5 Star Pick of the Week:

Washington St -17 vs. Idaho: The trail of slime that followed shit-stain Dennis Erickson his entire career has taken him back to where he started blatantly disregarding rules- in the Land of Potato. Unfortunately for him, he heads back to another former stomping ground that he left scandal-ridden, and the Wazzou natives are restless for his scurvy blood. The Krimson Kougs, using a power running game, will stomp the Vandals by at least 4 TDs, keeping Coach Doh-ba off the hot seat for another week.

Dennis Erickson: “I’m Idaho”

Me: “Yes, of course you are….”

beej,

The new clock rules/fewer plays excuse doesn't hold water.

USC rolled up 472 yds of total offense and 50 points against an Arkansas defense that I would say is at least the equal of, if not better than, Ga Tech's squad. They were able to run 80 plays on offense (42 rushes, 38 passes) with the new rules..
Sounds like you're trying to rationalize ND's offensive inefficiency.

Run Up the Score is right. Georgia Tech last week may have been the best team Weis has beaten (them or Michigan last year.) That's not to say it was Weis's most impressive game (either the USC loss last year or the Purdue win). Still, Weis (and Quinn) need wins over bowl competition to gain full legitimacy.

Tom--here's my recent history of wagers with ND:

(1) OSU (-4) v. ND in the Fiesta Bowl (W)
(2) GT (+7) v. ND last week (W)

You appear to have interpreted these selections as somehow correlating to an "anti-ND biased opinion," as opposed to seeing them as what they are--winners.

I will admit that I try to make it a point to be biased against teams that are going to lose against the spread.

This may be news to you, but I don't particularly care one way or another about Notre Dame. There are 119 teams that I pay attention to, and no one means any more than any other, in that regard.

But, if getting worked up about my largely positive comments about ND is what floats your boat, then keep on keeping on.

A pretty good D. That's about all GT was. Their offense just stinks outside of Calvin Johnson, and Chan Gailey sure as hell didn't do his team any favors. I've never seen a team employ the "try not to lose" strategy any better than Georgia Tech.

Look, I'm a Penn State guy, so I have an obvious bias heading into tomorrow. But I'm sorry, I still haven't seen Charlie Weis and the new, new, new Notre Dame beat a good team yet. I'm not saying they can't do it, but for Christ's sake, the constant effort by people to pump up these patsies like Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Navy is ridiculous. Maybe they'll beat us by 14 tomorrow, but if they do it'll be the first time they've actually accomplished anything significant under Weis.

To that end, it's not Notre Dame's fault that their 2005 ended up sucking, but they're getting way too much credit for ten wins over tomato cans and one really sweet moral victory against USC.

This Pitt / Cincy game makes me want to eat paint chips. Oh, and I love Akron tomorrow. I'm rocking the Penn State, Akron, Colorado State moneyline parlay. Happy gambling, all.

Irishbeej, perhaps you'd be satisified if I said the following:

I was not nearly as disappointed in ND’s performance last week, as they were going up against a tip-top D in a hostile environment, and their performance on O was actually pretty impressive.

Because now I have...twice.

Perhaps our definition of "handle" is different. Since I'm dealing with final scores, that's really all that matters to me. Scoring 14 pts against a pretty good D is not really "handling" them, in my estimation; certainly, I think most would agree that if they manage an equal output this week, it's not likely to cover the spread.

In "handling" a defense, I think controlling the ball for 35 minutes, putting up substantial yardage (we may disagree fundamentally on this since the shortage of plays has had only one full weekend from which to see an effect). I fail to see how that is not handling a defense. The 35 minutes of possession alone shows they handled the defense. By that, I mean ND's offense was in charge of the game. If you look at every facet of the game, it is abundantly clear that ND's offense was in charge. Did they score a bunch of points, no (Which to be honest scares the shit out of this irish fan), but they controlled the game.

In my humble opinion, if your offense, defense, or whatever clearly controls a game, it has handled its direct adversary, i.e., in this instance, the gtech defense.

As to your Ohio State point, I did not say ND played good offense, but handled the defense. They were not held to 200 yards of offense, as was the case many times with Ty Willy. They still put up pretty substantial numbers. If you don't have to stear from your strengths, you have succeded.

ND's strength has been its offense. It held the ball for 35 minutes, and won the game. Thankfully the defense didn't lose it. Absent TD passes and score, this offensive performance was not a statistical outlyer for the "highly touted" irish offense. I think pundits are relying on the score, which let's face it ultimately wins games. But a little deeper research shows an ND offense that did well.

I was just wondering on what basis Solon was saying ND didn't handle the Gtech defense. If his justification is score, than ok, ND did not handle the defense. But they moved the ball, and held onto the ball pretty damn well, especially in the second half.
