RULE 3-2-5-E STILL SUCKS: 18 PLAYS A GAME
Original estimates on the total number of plays lost per game due to rule 3-2-5e ran in the “oh, you know, just 10-14 plays” range. The actual total thus far after one weekend of play? 18.32 plays a game, a sum closer to the high end of what most rule-watchers predicted.
The rule is bad taco meat that’s getting worse. Your non-democratically elected and likely unresponsive contact for the rule is:

Has anyone found one single coach who supported this rule being passed?
Every quote I’ve read has blasted it. It can’t look good to the NCAA to have the entire mass of their coaches opposed to a rule that directly affects their jobs.
Then again, that’s assuming the NCAA cares.

can someone explain to me why the most obvious way to shorten a game has been avoided? all you have to do is keep the clock running on a first down. now, i say that the games were just fine the way they were, but you don’t see anyone complaining about the length of pro games. i think if you let the clock run on first down, and eliminate all the other garbage rules, the product will be much better.

Dear Ty,
I am a rabid college football fan and, as such, I am disgusted by the new rule 3-2-5e. Why on God’s green earth would you shorten the game that so many of us put on the same level of importance as Jesus Christ and the Second Amendment? You’re depriving us of about 18 plays per game. That adds up to like 200 plays per season. Do you know how many games that adds up to? It’s like three games. Your organization’s stupid rule took three games worth of football away from us. THREE GAMES. Honestly it’s like taking away Christmas. Does the NCAA hate Christmas, Ty? I hope not. Do you know what else? You may also have managed to take the single-season rush record away from Adrian Peterson. As a Sooner fan I find that despicable. Please let the powers that be know that I cannot fathom a single respectable reason to leave this rule on the books.
Thanks for your time,

Was Bruce Ciskie complaining about the length of the game he attended, or was he arguing that the mean is irrelevant because of his anecdote? Either way, this rule is the “camel’s nose under the tent” to turn college football into the No Fun League. Its amazing that people who profess to love college football would ever support a rule that was clearly designed by people who hate it.
Paul McGuire is awful; just awful. Its no surprize that he would be in favor of a half-witted rule. Has any announcer ever been more frequently wrong than him? The realization that he would be polluting college football with his anti-intellectual filth made me want to forget the English language. At least when he was paired with Theisman and Patrick he was covering crappy, meaningless games on the most depressing night of the week. Now he gets to ruin our Saturdays? Just awful.

TV time outs ruin everything. And even with their 5 minute advertising windows, the networks still run long and miss plays.
And the games were never too long to begin with. Anyone who complains about the length can go tailgate in their local stadium parking lot waiting for their local $500/ticket team play to a 8-8 season in the “Mediocrity is best, everyone’s a winner!!!” League.

Dear Mr. Ty Halpin,
I am an extremely devoted college football fan. Some might even call me obsessed. When considering that I almost got in a fist-fight with my roommate (and best-friend) over his decision to watch the new Nip/Tuck dvds on Thursday night instead of the Boston College v. CMU game (which, admittedly I had no reason to care about beyond it being a college football game, the first one after an extremely long eight months), I tend to agree with them. The new rules designed to shorten games are like a swift punch in the stomach. Given that I watch between six and eight games every Saturday, for approximately twelve weeks, plus bowls, they are depriving me of a significant portion of one of my favorite things in all the world. This is to say nothing of the games themselves that may have their outcomes affected. During Miami’s loss to FSU Monday, surely the last two minutes might have played out differently had the old rules still been in affect. Also various records will undoubtedly be affected. You may have managed to take the single-season rush record away from Michael Hart. As a Wolverine fan I find that despicable. Please let the powers that be know that I cannot fathom a single respectable reason to leave this rule on the books.

The time rules ruin the game. There will be far fewer 4th quarter comebacks this year. The winning team is learning to use the clock and stall, making it impossible for the opposition to get the necessary plays in to challenge. The rules suit only the advertisers who get more time to hawk their products. The game I was at Saturday was badly affected by the time rules. Can the ncaa do anything more to screw up the game of college football?

Buddy Vogler says:
The new rule has ruined the opportunity for many fans across the nation to watch a thrilling comeback attempt in the great game of college football. The collegiate refs aren’t able to keep up with the speed of the game, therefore when they don’t get the spot right and the clock runs out then more time is put back on the clock it just creates more confusion… But whoever the dumbass was that wrote this rule left a big hole in it. Just ask the Wisconsin Coach…. In a stroke of brilliance he kicked out off three times to end a game, because he instructed one of his players to be offsides each time. Since the clock starts when the ball is kicked there was no chance for the trailing team to make any sort of comback. The NCAA will try to fix this with an unsportsmanlike penalty again giving refs more trouble by asking them to make a judgement call. The fewer rules that require referee judgement in the game the better. I know there have to be some, but this is what breeds inconsistency. I wrote Ty about this and he was quick to fire back except about how Wisconsin can kickoff and run out the clock…
It is a stupid rule and gives one side or the other a distinct advantage… Nice job NCAA!!!
