AP POLL: TEXAS/OSU=1 VS. 2.

The AP poll is out, and Ohio State/Texas will be a match of one versus two this week. Taste the conspiracy!

Tennessee gets mad bump here, going up 12 spots after bloodenating Cal. Cal, who had been obviously overvalued at 9, falls to number 22.

Why is anyone still giving votes to Cal? The only thing we know about this team right now is they played one game, and played it horribly. I’m not saying an 0-1 team can’t be ranked, but if you are 0-1 and have gotten trounced, you can’t be.

Gozer,
That’s the problem with preseason polls.

Not sure if you caught this or not: Two texas players busted Monday morning on marijuana and gun charges.
Starting CB Tarell Brown and backup LB Tyrell Gatewood arrested

OSU being ranked #1 is just a classic example of liberal media bias. By putting the Buckeyes so high, the liberal media hope to curry favor in Ohio and turn a red state blue.

Or something like that. At any rate, it ought to be a hell of a game.

How the hell did USC jump Auburn? All the boogs did was go out and drop 40 in a decent Coug team. I mean, obviously I’m not an Auburn fan, but this is ridiculous.

I found the secret cribsheet for early media polls.

by NewAZTiger on Sep 5, 2006 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Tater Salad: Follow the advertising dollars. If USC and the winner of Texas/tOSU run the table, any other team that runs the table will be left out.

Right now I would have USC above Auburn. I’m shocked that Notre Dame still has eight first place votes. Does Beano get one for each chin?

by AUAlum on Sep 5, 2006 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I would have USC above Auburn, too. It’s sad but true. Basically, Ohio St., Texas, and Notre Dame need to lose so AU can get revenge on USC at the end of the year.

by True on Sep 5, 2006 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe USC is better than AU. But I thought it was made abundantly clear over the past few years that it doesn’t matter who you think is better. It only matters who started higher in the polls.

by Tater Salad on Sep 5, 2006 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

USC above AU is debatable, but you have to consider the Trojans incredible run over the past 3 years. has to give them the edge. Despite what was said above, Washington State is not a “decent” team, they suck.

True – Why is it that AU wants revenge on SC? Is it for the 23-0 game in ’03 or did I mis something else?

Playing the team that sideswiped Miami and Auburn week worked against ND in the polls ,

But next week a win over PSU would move ND to #2 with Auburn playing Mississipi State and USC playing the Song girls (bye).

by canuck on Sep 5, 2006 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Let’s not forget that 2 points separate USC, ND, and Auburn in the AP poll right now. None of them has a lock on #2 until the others stumble.

That being said a ND win over PSU would put them at #2 in week 2.

Week 3 Michigan and LSU are bigger opponents than Nebraska, so it’s unlikely USC reaches #2 without help.

by canuck on Sep 5, 2006 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

Dammit, when can we get to play the Song Girls?

by NewAZTiger on Sep 5, 2006 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Why do people always bring up what happened last season? Who cares…USC was better than AU last season, but that shouldn’t affect this season.

Revenge would be for the BS in ‘04 when AU didn’t get a chance to prove it was the best team in the country against USC…and the ’03 bashing.

by True on Sep 5, 2006 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

Oh and Notre Dame will be out of discussion soon…that was a pathetic showing for the “best team in the country.” ND wasn’t good last year and they’re probably worse this year.

by True on Sep 5, 2006 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Teams can make big jumps in the early polls (like TN this week), so it isn’t ALL where you start out.

And for the Auburn fans still whining about getting left out of the BCS game, remember had you not lost to USC in the two previous years you probably would have been ranked higher than you were (remember when you started out at the top of the pre-season polls? You didn’t seem to mind them back then).

It’s too early to stress too much about poll position at this point, we just got started. And either USC or ND is going to be dumped from the cluster when they play each other. If both are undefeated at that point though, the winner is going to get a BCS spot. Just like the winner of tOSU/TX will be on track for the other spot in the title game.

True,

ND’s 1st half and the 2 missed FGs will be a footnote if they beat a pair of top 20 teams the next 2 Saturdays.

At least ND beat GT. If Auburn hadn’t lost to GT last year they’d might have opened #2 this year.

by canuck on Sep 5, 2006 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Canuck,

I don’t think the GT loss had as much to do with that as the piss-poor Wisconsin loss. If AU had beaten Wisconsin in the bowl game, they would have started the season #1 hands-down.

by True on Sep 5, 2006 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, the haters just can’t stand that ND controls its own destiny—probably because they’re afraid ND will win the next three weeks and cruise to the SC game.

by captaineclectic on Sep 5, 2006 6:54 PM EDT reply actions

captaineclectic,

Everyone knows that will happen. ND doesn’t play anybody.

by Brady's Sister on Sep 5, 2006 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t get me wrong—I’m terrified of each of the next three games. But as much as I’m scared my team will lose, there’s plenty of people who’re scared we’ll win.

by captaineclectic on Sep 5, 2006 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Do you think we should play a few games before getting so excited? I don’t think we really know anything yet.

by Mac Daddy on Sep 5, 2006 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

Auburn completely shuts down a prolific offense and gets jumped by USC who beat a team without their running back and whose in a quarterback flux. I’ve yet to see any headlines regarding the defense Auburn played against Wazzou. Hill had something like three catches and the quarterback like 60 yards. Are you kidding me? For an Auburn fan that stings especially since it finally seems we were getting some respect. If tubervile wanted to Auburn could have averaged at least 14 more points per game over the last two years. I admire him but wish he would just rack it up sometimes because apparently that’s what gets votes.

by texastease on Sep 5, 2006 11:45 PM EDT reply actions

These are probably the same people who get all fired up when some canidate is annouced as winning a state when there are 5% of the votes counted.

You know, crazy like Dan Rather.
