I had the good fortune to stumble upon a column written by Birmingham News sports columnist and resident Auburn fellater Kevin Scarbinsky about the whole academic-scandal thing — basically trying to make the point that however much “fear the dumb” stings the Aubies, “fear the thumb” stings the Bama fans worse. Yawn.

But the best part of the column, because it was nearly as much of a knee-slapper as Herring’s dumbass statement, was something along the lines of “But whatever happens, there’s one thing they can never take away from Auburn — their 2004 People’s National Championship.” Yes, Auburn fans, you can breathe easy, because nobody can lay a finger on your entirely contrived title that was never earned on a field of play and is recognized by precisely nobody. Time to celebrate!

BTW I was in Mobile this past weekend- I saw a chick walking down Dauphin St. in a gimp mask, and a dude wearing assless chaps- I lived there for 23 years, and never saw that before.

Actually, that ranking might have been just in football, which is even more absurd – there was a graphic about Auburn’s place within the APR universe with the infamous NYTimes article, but I can’t recall all the details (and I’m not paying to read it again), and the NCAA’s pdf files keep crashing my computer. Bastards.

To be entirely fair to Herring (and as a Gator-from-birth, saying that pains me beyond belief), Auburn was ranked something like fifth nationally on last year’s Academic Progress Rate, which demonstrates either that the APR is horribly deficient or that Auburn is cooking the books in truly monumental fashion. I vote both…
