OHIO STATE RECRUIT IN JEOPARDY OF NOT QUALIFYING

Prized Ohio State wide receiver recruit, Raymond Small, might not be suiting up for the Buckeyes next season after all. He is in a position that Michigan fans around the globe probably don't believe exists... he's qualified academically by the NCAA, but tOSU's admissions are waivering on accepting him. Gator fans should feel symphathy for tOSU as we remember Lance Mitchell.

we also remember larry grant, who wasn’t able to qualify at UF, and now is going to play at tOSU.

Grant comes to OSU from JUCO, however. Wasn’t Grant all but ready for Florida but he was lacking a specific math class?

by Keith on Jun 30, 2006 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

I’m confused. Doesn’t tOSU offer Kinesiology? What about General Studies?

by irishoutsider on Jun 30, 2006 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

The most disturbing thing about that link is the news that OSU is going to be playing D-II Youngstown State twice in the next 5 years. A reward for hiding info from the NCAA??

Preemptive strike – 1-4, 1-4, 1-4, and 1-4.

If the kid meets NCAA standards but not OSU standards, I can only conclude that he is incapable of growing a Buckstache. What else could it possibly be?

by DevilGrad on Jun 30, 2006 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Supposedly, the “inside” word is that he’s in. But this has been happening a lot lately to OSU. Highly touted RB Javon Ringer did not even consider OSU due to admissions and went to MSU. Derrell Johnson the same and went to Iowa (Johnson was a die-hard fan of OSU and OSU wanted him also). Josh Chicester was in this class but had to go to Loiusville instead. Freddie Lennix of Glenville, who was supposedly the best player on his team at Glenville which included Ted Ginn Jr, and Jamario O’Neal, gray shirted for a season, and still didn’t make it so he went to Cincinnati…

FYI, Youngstown State is Div. I-AA, not Div II. Still a disgrace.

In my opinion it should be ok for Div I-A teams to play Div I-AA teams, but you should have an automatic 1 point penalty in the BCS (which would therefore mean 2 points if you lost the game).

I-A playing I-AA is fine for the sport because even small I-A stadiums are pretty good payouts for the I-AA schools. It gives the alums of lower I-A schools something to feel good about at homecoming and a needed financial boost for the I-AA schools.

HOWEVER, if you plan on competing for the National Championship, you should not be allowed that easy of an opponent. What good does it do? There are plenty of poorI-A schools for top teams to play that they don’t need to add I-AA to soften the schedule even more.

BYU didn’t only played 4 teams with winning records and wasn’t that an exciting year for the National Championship?

BYU Played (opponent record):
Pitt (3-7-1)
Baylor (5-6)
Tulsa (6-5, with John Cooper)
Hawaii (7-4)
Colorado State (3-8)
Wyoming (6-6)
Air Force (8-4)
New Mexico (4-8)
UTEP (2-9)
San Diego State (4-7-1)
Utah (6-5-1)
Utah State (1-10)
Michigan (Holiday Bowl) (6-6)

Now, I’m not saying this to bust on BYU, only to promote that top teams should be playing decent opponents.

Even though we are in the doldrums of the college football offseason, it is safe to say that this is already a great year.

I would like to thank Maurice Clarett, Cheatypants McSweatervest, John Cooper, the hordes of public masturbators and cooler defecators, and the tOSU administration. Them mixed with all of the die hard tOSU haters have made this possible. God bless America and College football. This is indeed the year of years.

NavyGrad – thanks for the correction. My bad.

by maskedavenger on Jun 30, 2006 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

Navy, I’m not happy about playing them either, but since we’re playing home and home OOC games with Texas, USC, Va Tech and Miami (Fl) in the next decade I think it’s no big deal.

tOSU wavering on accepting someone because of academics?

Please excuse me while I step out for penance, because I don’t want to be one of those “left behind”.

by GamecockTony on Jun 30, 2006 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

Pants,
I didn’t think tOSU even offered D. Johnson, when they were after him he wasn’t elgible, and then when he became eligble, tOSU didn’t have any schollies left. At which point Michigan and Iowa went after him hard.

Have I been mis-informed? If so my feelings may be hurt.

Pants McPants,

Hate tOSU, love the name.

Don’t act like the U, USC, Miami, and Va Tech are something out of this world difficult over the next decade. You pussies are playing a I AA team and I am happy for the extra ammunition in the up coming years of arguments.

Suckers!

Home and home with Alabama is also in the works

by Tommy on Jun 30, 2006 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

I guess this will be the first real test of that Academic Encourager.

BTW, LSU won the BCS MNC after playing a 1AA team.

by NewAZTiger on Jun 30, 2006 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

God I love the OSU hatred. Keep coming with the internet bisceps and non-sequiturs.

BTW, Michigan is the school that offers Kinesiology.

by Keith on Jun 30, 2006 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

eh, fatfingers, drop the “s”

by Keith on Jun 30, 2006 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Odell, I’m not quite sure who you would like tOSU to schedule if Miami, VA Tech, and USC are not quality opponents?

by Tommy on Jun 30, 2006 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

I think Odell means that scheduling Miami doesn’t give tOSU a free pass to play Division 1-AA schools.

by Andy on Jun 30, 2006 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

Michigan is not the only school the offers Kinesiology courses. Here is a course list from OSU:

enjoy

Included in this target-rich list is the potential for 10 hours of class credit for football.

Again, as a public service: 1-4, 1-4, 1-4, and btw 1-4.

by maskedavenger on Jun 30, 2006 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

That’s exactly what I am saying Andy. Thanks.

Youngstown State. JESUS! I got a letter of recruitment from them to play football.

FYI. I played right tackle at 220lbs in high school.

Jim Tressel coached at YSU before getting the OSU job. They won 4 national championships in the 90’s. Now that I-A’s can count one I-AA win a year towards bowl eligibility and there is a 12 game schedule, most teams are scheduling one I-AA a year. Get used to it and quit whining

by tim on Jun 30, 2006 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

OOOOOOOOhhh, tim. touchy touchy.

and Keith, do go all truthy on me. if i were interested in facts, i’d tell you.

by adam on Jul 1, 2006 12:19 AM EDT reply actions

The only reason we are playing them is because Tressel coached there previously, and won the aforementioned 4 national championships. Ohio State is one of the more audacious when it comes to OOC, so I don’t know what the stink is. I can’t remeber Ohio State scheduling a I-AA school in the past, and can’t imagine them scheduling another I-AA school besides YSU.
But whatever I guess. There are way too many Michigan fans on the internet at a given time to properly combat the propaganda.

by OhEssYou on Jul 1, 2006 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

texas is playing sam houston state and much of the SEC would play exclusively I-AA OOC if they could get away with it

by tim on Jul 1, 2006 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

Niles,

The info I got was that OSU was aware DJ would not pass admissions at OSU, even though he did end up meeting the NCAA requirements…Pretty certain we had a scholly available, since Chichester went to L-ville, and I don’t think we use up all the schollies available to begin with…

by Pants McPants on Jul 3, 2006 9:57 AM EDT reply actions

Actually Youngstown State isn’t on OSU schedules and I don’t believe they will be. Oh it was talked about on the forums all over the place but it hasn’t happened. But Penn State does have the Penguins on their schedule this year.

by Orlbuckeye on Jul 9, 2006 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

DJ didn’t qualify because he wasn’t he didn’t have a GPA in the top 50% of his class at Cardinal Mooney.
