BLOG POLL ROUNDTABLE: EDSBS GOES ALL MATCH.COM
Is there a better way to kill the off-season than talking about ourselves? I think not. That is why this EDSBS edition of the blog poll roundtable for discussion is designed to either refresh everyone’s recollection about our fellow participants or give us a greater insight into the deep dark psyche of each of us.

1. Education. List the region of the country you were born in, what universities you attended and at least one other you would have attended if your alma mater didn’t exist.
Orson’s Example: Born in Nashville, Tennessee. Graduated from University of Florida with a BA in something useless. Also picked up a M.S. from Georgia Tech, but still can’t do math. If we had to attend another uni, we would have chosen the University of Washington, because it is beaaaauuuyoouuutiful.
2. Sports Affiliations. List your top 10 favorite teams in all of sports in decending order. For instance, your alma mater’s football team may be number 1, but perhaps there is a professional team that squeezes in before you get to your alma mater’s lacrosse team.
10? We’re not that diverse, sportswise. Five we can do:
a. The Florida Gators football team.
b. U.S. Soccer
c. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
d. The Atlanta Falcons.
e. Umm…did we mention the Florida Gators? Again, we’re rather focused.
3. Movies. List the movie you’ve watched the most, your favorite sports related movie, the movie you secretly love but don’t like to admit it (possibly a chick flick or b film), and the movie you were (or still are) most looking forward to from this summer’s season.
Most watched: Caddyshack, probably. It’s a generational thing.
Fave sports movie: Major League. Screw profundity–Charlie Sheen telling the ump to “blow me” while grabbing his nuts is poetry.
Shame flick: The 13th Warrior. Vikings fighting Cromagnons and accepting fate like men.
4. Music. List your favorite band from middle school, high school, college and today. Also, as with the movies, include the song you secretly love but don’t like to admit. If Nickleback is involved in any of these responses, please give a detailed explanation as to why, god, why.
Middle school: the Beatles.
High school: R.E.M.
College: Radiohead, though the CD we pushed ’til it bled was Wu-Tang.
Shamelove song: “Since You’ve Been Gone,” Kelly Clarkson. Rocks ass despite jacking the bridge from “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
5. Books. Favorite book you’ve finished, worst book you’ve finished and the book you really should read but haven’t gotten around to it.
Favorite: the Brothers Karamazov.
Worst: Their Eyes Were Watching God. A man dies after being bitten by a dog floating on a dead cow. Nothin’ else needed for proof of shittiness.
Book we should read but haven’t: A Son of the Circus, John Irving.
6. Travel. Favorite city you’ve every been to and the one place you still must visit before you shuffle off this mortal coil.
Fave city: Bangkok.
City we need to go to: Rio. Have you seen the video for “Beautiful” by Snoop Dogg? You’re going, too.
7. What do you love most about college football in 20 words or less?
Love, beauty, violence, and singularity.

Fabulous post, it’s almost like one of those meetings where we have to fill out questionnaires to mingle. Only better, because we want to be here.
In looking at the various posts, I have noted that many people have listed the Beatles and Rolling Stones as their favorite groups. I did too, but my guess is that they discovered them from either their parents’ CDs or an “oldies” station.
Sorry about screwing up your demographics…

This is definitely the best blogpoll ever. My answers
Courtesy of EDSBS, shocking, I know.
1. Education. List the region of the country you were born in, what universities you attended and at least one other you would have attended if your alma mater didn’t exist.
Just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit. Er, Livonia, a really boring western suburb of The D. Proud double alum of The University of Michigan in 2002 with a BS in biology and 2006 with my DDS. People actually call me “doctor” and I get mail with a prefix in front of my name now. It’s fucking weird. Had I been forced to go somewhere else, it would definitely have been a big state school. Something along the lines of Texas, Wisconsin, Bama, etc. But honestly, I probably would have gone to UNC (had I gotten in for dental school I would have gone there). Great weather, fun college town, and 3:2 female to male ratio. Score!
2. Sports Affiliations. List your top 10 favorite teams in all of sports in decending order. For instance, your alma mater’s football team may be number 1, but perhaps there is a professional team that squeezes in before you get to your alma mater’s lacrosse team.
Michigan Football, Michigan Basketball, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings, Michigan Hockey, any US National Team. That’s it, I’m a firm believer that you are not allowed to be a sports traitor and root for professional teams outside of your hometown (although the order of mine does change) and those 3 Michigan teams are really the only ones I follow.
3. Movies. List the movie you’ve watched the most, your favorite sports related movie, the movie you secretly love but don’t like to admit it (possibly a chick flick or b film), and the movie you were (or still are) most looking forward to from this summer’s season.
Most watched: Way too hard to answer but it’s gonna be something along the lines of Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Braveheart, King Arthur, and Die Hard with a Vengeance
Sports-related: Tie between Remember the Titans and The Sandlot
Secret love: some cheesy chick flicks such as Notting Hill, Serendipity, Bring It On
Looking forward to: Miami Vice. It’s going to be absolutely terrible. And I’ll love every second of it.
4. Music. List your favorite band from middle school, high school, college and today. Also, as with the movies, include the song you secretly love but don’t like to admit. If Nickleback is involved in any of these responses, please give a detailed explanation as to why, god, why.
Middle school: Nirvana
High Sponge, Green Day, 2 Pac and Biggie
College: Guster, A New Found Glory
Today: Guster, Keane, Our Lady Peace, and Sister Hazel
Secret: Tony Basil-Micky
5. Books. Favorite book you’ve finished, worst book you’ve finished and the book you really should read but haven’t gotten around to it.
Favorite: A People’s History of The United States by Howard Zinn
Worst: Intruder in the Dust by William Faulker. I still don’t know what the fuck was going on. His writing is atrocious.
Haven’t gotten to yet: Dude, I have a list. There’s way too many.
6. Travel. Favorite city you’ve every been to and the one place you still must visit before you shuffle off this mortal coil.
Favorite: Chicago, hands down. But I’ve only been to Boston once and had a blast and I need to explore SF more now that I’m an adult.
Must Visit: Somewhere, anywhere, in Africa or Asia. Or London, Paris, Madrid, Venice, Rome, Rio; look, there’s a lot.
7. What do you love most about college football in 20 words or less?
Laughing, Crying, Beer, The Wave, Friends, Winning, Winged Helmets, Not Losing, Hating Ohio State and Notre Dame, The Victors, Michigan

Not sure I should, but here goes says:
Is this an exclusive thing, like for bloggers only? Cause it seems like everybody is just spilling their guts here. If you’ll accept entries from people that don’t have the guts or know-how to start a blog, here goes.
1. a. God’s country. b. Auburn. c. Ohio U. d. Whomever would’ve taken me. (Whoever? God, I can never get that right. The only clause I for sure believe in is Santa.)
2. a. Auburn football. b. Auburn men’s and women’s golf (SID contact days). c. All other Auburn non-profit (screw the trend toward calling them “Olympic”, cause that’s what they are is non-profit) sports. d. Former Auburn football players current pro teams, but especially the Redskins. e. Buccaneers. f. Dolphins g-j. Whoever (whomever?…shit, foiled by grammer, again) is playing UAT.
3. a. Blazing Saddles, though Caddyshack runs a close second. By the by, Lacy Underalls=hottest movie rack ever. What the hell ever happened to that chick? b. The Big Lebowski, and yes, I realize that Caddyshack is just as much of a sports movie. The choices make sense in my head. c. For Love Of The Game. Costner sucks. Travolta’s crazy-assed Scientologist wife sucks, but very attractively I might add. The reason I love it? If you hate LSU baseball like everyone except an LSU fan should, watching Michael Papajohn get made a fool of at the plate more than makes up for all the other BS in the movie.
4. a. Donna Summer (and her band…I’m guessing she had one). I’m old now, but back then I was young and horny. b. The Who. c. John Prine and his, uh, band. d. Wilco.
5. a. All The King’s Men. It’s supposed to be about Huey Long (well, sort of, but not really). As an Alabama boy born and bred, however, I kind of like to think about Big Jim Folsom while reading it. b. I can’t say that I’ve ever finished a book and been pissed. I’ll never be able to criticize anyone who has the courage to cut themselves wide open for 200 pages or so. c. Light In August. I started it, but never got around to finishing it.
6. a. New Orleans. I’ve been there as a visitor and loved it and lived there as a resident and hated it. That makes no sense…but that’s New Orleans. I hate to love that town. b. Auckland. I’d pick the whole of New Zealand, but it ain’t a city. They love rugby. And rugby players beat the crap out of one another without pads or helmets. I want to drink copious amounts of brown liquor with those people.
7. a. I cant’ do 20 words, but I can give you a fairly short story. In early 1987, the nation’s OMG VHT, to borrow an acronym, was one Emmitt Smith. Word is it was between Auburn and Florida for his services and the Gators possessed the bigger bankroll. Later that year, Emmitt had rushed for more yards in his first six or seven games than any freshman back in NCAA history. Then he came to Auburn. Halloween night. Auburn wins by a large margin, shuts Emmitt down completely. At one point in the fourth quarter, it’s so loud the goalposts are vibrating. I crap you negatory, the goalposts were moving like freaking large-scale tuning forks. But what I remember more than anything else is that as the clock reached zero and the teams left the field to the Auburn fan’s taunts of “Emmitt, Emmitt, Emmitt”, Pat Dye sought out a dejected looking Emmitt Smith, put his arm around him and walked him all the way to the to the tunnel beneath the student section, ensuring that no one would throw anything from the stands. That’s what I love about college football. There’s magic and passion. For some, there’s passion beyond what they themselves can control. But for others, there’s also passion with perspective and respect.
Okay, so I guess that wasn’t fairly short. But as an Auburn grad, if I can’t tell a story without drawing pictures in the dirt with a stick, I’ll ramble on all night.
Which I just did. Apologies.

Brent- Your secret song, Mickey by Toni Basil always makes me laugh, since so few people apparently listen to the words and understand the song.
Mickey is a pretty boy and they spend lots of time together and she can’t give it away. hmmm….maybe because Mickey is gay?
So she tells him that she has “something you can use”. Maybe she’s offering up a sex act a bit more like what he is into? Then comes the clincher for this interpretation: “Come on baby give it to me any way you can. I’ll take it any way you want, I’ll take it like a man”. Yep, she’s offering a gay guy anal sex.
I could never explain to my kids why I was so amused when they used to play a version of the song on Radio Disney.

1. Born in Cleveland, raised in central North Carolina. B.S. from Georgetown, M.P.P. from Duke, working on the J.D. and official overeducated status from UVA. Had none of them existed, I probably would have lived my life in the cold grave that is South Bend, IN. It’s a family thing.
2. 1) Notre Dame football (again, it’s a family thing) 2) Duke basketball (it’s a ‘northern transplant to NC’ thing) 3) Cleveland Browns (it’s a curse) 4) Cleveland Indians (ditto) 5) Virginia football (still cursed) 6) Georgetown basketball (doomed) 7) U.S. men’s soccer (infuriating)
Cleveland Cavaliers (ripped my heart out when they traded Mark Price) 9) Arsenal (four months in London will do that to you) 10) Washington Nationals (DC deserves this much).
3. Most watched and favorite sports flick – Major League (see Cleveland connection, supra.)
Guilty pleasure – Pixar animated movies (the little lady has a thing for them).
Summer movie – Nacho Libre.
4. Middle school – Blues Traveler, I think. Maybe M.C. Hammer. Maybe both.
High School – a healthy obsession with Ben Folds Five.
College – Better Than Ezra and a two year affair with country.
Guilty pleasure – 80s music, and I’m not just talking Police and U2 – bring on the Pat Benetar and Scandal.
5. Ah, shit, I don’t read…
Best – Memoirs of a Geisha; what can I say, I really enjoyed it. Also, I have a thing for Asian women, so the mental imagery was appreciated.
6. Favorite city – in a shocker (hehe), Cape Town. I completely fell for South Africa, and I strongly encourage anyone who even remotely likes soccer to use the 2010 World Cup as an excuse to go.
City I need to get to – Istanbul.
7. It provides a safe harbor to spew my hatred for Ann Arbor, Tallahassee, and L.A., and to love being Irish.
Worst – Waiting for Teddy Williams; an awful baseball book I read out of guilt because my dad gave it to me.
Need to – Ulysses. It’s like the educated Irish-American penance.

Worst: Faulkner – sorry he puts me to sleep. More over rated than Ohio State in any given year.
Book we should read but haven’t: The Tipping Point – Malcolm Gladwell. You really should read Son of the Circus – not Irving’s best but worthwhile. Come to think of it, Prayer For Owen Meany would get an honorable mention in the favorite fiction list.
6. Travel. Chicago is my all time favorite city to visit (in the summer of course) – that includes the 1/2 dozen European cities I’ve been to. Friendly people, great food, lots of culture – not quite as cosmopolitan as NYC but the midwestern ethos makes up for it
Must visit – Sydney.
7. What do you love most about college football in 20 words or less?
