NOTRE DAME GETS FIRST POSTSEASON VICTORY SINCE 1993

It's been a very, very long time coming, but Notre Dame finally gets a postseason victory in the form of Tom Zbikowski scrambling Robert Bell's brains in their fight at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. Zbikowski took Bell down in 49 seconds for the knockout and did so in scary fashion, bolstering his reputation as the baddest Pole to walk the earth since Thaddeus Kosciuszko. This assertion of badness stands despite facing an opponent like Bell, who appears to be the guy who runs the midday shift at steady ol' Waffle House 1000 just down the block from us on College Ave.

Watch Zibby demolish Bell below. Ladies of EDSBS, if this turns you on, we know a lawyer who specializes in restraining orders. You'll need his number eventually.

Wow an EDSBS article this late at night? I thought my RSS was broken. I’ll be the insomniac who replies first.

Notice at the end, Bell’s cornerman was wearing an Ohio State jersey? Supposedly Bell is an Ohio State fan and he wore their gear during his ring entrance.

Has a school ever had such a devastating image hit like OSU in a 2-3 week span like this in terms of fashion?

by BIGMIKE on Jun 12, 2006 1:21 AM EDT reply actions

Like any other significant Notre Dame win, there should certainly be the taint of sketchiness to this one. Also, I’m sure that Lou Holtz is prolly friends with the boxing commission.

by Newspaper Hack on Jun 12, 2006 1:25 AM EDT reply actions

Doesn’t “devastating image hit” imply that the Ohio State news was somehow contrary to their previous image?

Someone should really check on Beano Cook – he may very well have died from an orgasm/heart attack/massive stroke after watching this.

Best case scenario is that he is passed out on his kitchen floor with, ummm – fuck it, there’s no nice way to say this cleverly – dried up semen stains on his boxer shorts, a cashed 750ml of Wild Turkey in one hand, and a puddle of drool running out of his open mouth onto the tile floor.

Somewhere, Drew Tate is crying.

I have to admit, that’s a pretty funny post title. Nice work.

Two points:

A.) He defeated a 30-something slug with a 2-2 lifetime record (that’s right…four pro fights)…woo hoo!

B.) How dare you not mention the great Ivan Putski as the baddest Pole ever!?!?

by immikefazz on Jun 12, 2006 8:20 AM EDT reply actions

so explain why he was allowed to do this, yet drew tate couldn’t take that car and jeremy bloom couldn’t ski?

by adam on Jun 12, 2006 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

For those of you with a few extra minutes, here’s the extended version of the fight.

http://dietler.net/nd/videos/quickplay/?video=zibby_fight_extended

by Geaux Irish on Jun 12, 2006 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

Jeremy Bloom took endorsements and Tate can’t accept a car as winnings in a charity golf tournament.

Zibby went pro in a 2nd sport, which happens a lot in the NCAA (see football players who are professional baseball players as well). He just happens to be the first to ever go pro in boxing as opposed to other sports.

by Bill on Jun 12, 2006 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

Got get that win somewhere. doesn’t hurt to have it againsth te last team we lost to. I was at the fight, it was pretty entertaining. just over $500 for each second in the ring is a pretty nice payday.

I liked that Bebe Winans was singing the ND Fight Song while Zibby came out of the tunnel.

I usually hate all things Dome, but I’m actually kind of pulling for Tommy Z to make it big. He seems like a good kid.

by Auburn Fan on Jun 12, 2006 10:12 AM EDT reply actions

but the only reason he went pro in another sport was because of his noteriety in football. it’s not as if he’s been training for years, working his way up to ranks. i’m not a huge anti-ncaa person, but this seems absurd. it’s not that i have a problem with him doing his, it’s that i have a problem with not lettering tate and bloom do what they wanted. i mean, it’s not as if tate hit a hole in one because he is the qb for iowa.

by adam on Jun 12, 2006 10:14 AM EDT reply actions

adam,

He has been training since he was a boy! He has a 75-15 amatuer record! He is no newbie to boxing.

by Sean on Jun 12, 2006 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

He was 75-15 in amateur fights including Golden Gloves competition. I would say that would fall in the “working his way up the ranks” category. As for whether he would have had that kind of billing without ND football – clearly not. So in that regard, I would agree that the NCAA screwed up with Tate.

by Watson on Jun 12, 2006 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

Adam, he has been boxing since he was 9. What more do you want? His amateur record is something like 75-15.

by scal on Jun 12, 2006 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

if he weren’t a star notre dame player, would he have been in that fight?

by adam on Jun 12, 2006 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

maybe not, but a pro career would have happened some day. I think he proved he can hang. Being a pro boxer was his dream anyways, so it’s not like he wouldn’t have given it a shot.

by Wooderson on Jun 12, 2006 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

He would have been in a fight, but without the hoopla surrounding the fight. Zibby has a 75-15 amatuer record, which is amassed mainly in high school, so the guy has done alot of boxing and wasn’t just in a ring because he’s an ND football players. Bloom’s problem (fairly or unfairly) was the endorsements that he would have to take to be a pro skier and Tate’s problem was that he was in the charity golf tournament because he is the QB. Zibby was going pro in another sport without taking any endorsements or is allowed to do any advertisements referring to his status as a player on ND’s football team. Now, if sportswriters want to hype up the fact that he’s on ND’s football team, then there’s nothing the NCAA can do. But there were no mentions of his status in any of the official fight ads.

by ND Alum on Jun 12, 2006 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but at the same time Tate wouldn’t have had the chance to play in the tournament if he wasn’t the Hawkeye QB.

by Broom on Jun 12, 2006 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

Rhema looked pretty happy.

by Rick on Jun 12, 2006 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

The fact that the NCAA makes absurd and arbitrary decisions should be held agains the NCAA not Zbikowski.

by GK on Jun 12, 2006 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

Tom Zbikowski vs. Pillsbury Dough Boy:

It looks like the cotton-picker that schedules the cream puff teams for Notre Dame football also schedules the “fights” for its footballers.

Robert “Love Handles” Bell looks like he ought to be in a boxing ring as much as Charlie Weis looks like he ought to be in a Speedo contest.

A professional wrastlin’ match with George “the animal” Steele has more substance than the this so-called “fight”.

by Harvey Wireman on Jun 12, 2006 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

Obviously one can tell by his previous record that he’s good but com’on that type of ass kicking is only the result of a cream puff oponent. This fight was pretty much a set-up publicity fight for the high profile Football Player/Boxer. I’m no expert, but anyone who is: please tell me if there was any question of the outcome before the fight began.

by Steve on Jun 12, 2006 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

The key question for Tate is: Did he pay to participate in the charity golf tournament like everyone else, or was he a guest in order to attract others to participate and donate to charity? If he paid like every other participant, then I believe he should have been able to keep the car because he received no extraordinary benefit from being a student athlete. However, it’s unlikely that he paid to participate.

by Mickey on Jun 12, 2006 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

some of the pre-fight pub mentioned that it is typical for a first pro fight to be against a lighter opponent, in this case the aforementioned cream puff that was Robert Bell. I guess this is especially true when the debut is by someone with name recognition already.

by AllWhoYonder on Jun 12, 2006 11:22 AM EDT reply actions

Well considering it was his first professional fight, this is the type opponent that most fighters take on. Mike Tyson didn’t have bout one vs. Razor Ruddock. He probably fought some stiff. That’s how the fight game works, it builds up.

by Auburn Fan on Jun 12, 2006 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

As for Zbikowski’s opponent, it makes me wonder who the two professionals were that Bell knocked out for his 2 professional wins. If aiming for true cream puffs, those are the two guys they should have put in the ring with Zbikowski.

The guy lost 15 amateur fights and people are describing him as “good”? Heck, that’s not even good enough to make it to the Olympics, much less a pro career. His hands looked slow to me and I think any decent heavyweight would make short work of him. It’s a nice publicity stunt and I’m all for following one’s dreams, but this guy will be a middle-school P.E. coach in five years.

by baconboy on Jun 12, 2006 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

Baconboy,

Actually he will be a four year starting safety in the NFL in five years.

by walkernd95 on Jun 12, 2006 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

“The guy lost 15 amateur fights and people are describing him as “good”?”

Yeah, when you’re fighting at 12 or 15 years old, you sometimes run into someone that might be better than you. And you can turn pro without winning all your amatuer matches…you think Robert Bell won all of his?

by ND Alum on Jun 12, 2006 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

His hands looked slow? Maybe it didn’t translate as well on a computer screen but if that is your criticism of his skill you are a moron. The fact that he didn’t have his hands up to defend himself the entire fight would cause him problems against a serious boxer, but the speed of his hands is pretty damned good.

by Joe on Jun 12, 2006 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

Says the poster with a handle appropriately labeled “baconboy.”

His hands looked slow to me and I think any decent heavyweight would make short work of him.

Feel free to step into the ring with him, Butterbean. The kid wanted to box professionally. Bob Arum saw a profitable opportunity. Why shouldn’t he have fought?

As a professional fighter one has to start somewhere. It’s not like a professional baseball player goes right from the MLB draft to batting against Mike Mussina. There’s a steady progression. He probably won’t see a decent heavyweight until he has more time to devote to this but it shouldn’t certainly be a knock against the kid.

by Domer99 on Jun 12, 2006 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

75-15 is an excellent amateur record. Wasn’t Tyson like 15-5 as an amateur? Amateur scoring is very strict and arbitrary – it’s easy to lose a decision as an amateur even though an objective observer would say you won the fight.

by Bill on Jun 12, 2006 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

I thought Angelo Dundee was dead! To my surprise he was in TZ’s corner, but appeared dazed, confused and sleepy.

I think TZ should keep his day job. IMO he is much more suited to FB.

BTW, did he hit his opponent with a left when his knee was down?

by sj on Jun 12, 2006 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

I think I’ve found the two opponents Bell beat.

by NDTom on Jun 12, 2006 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

He hit the guy with 2-3 left hooks when his knee went down. If the last one he threw had hit the guy’s jaw instead of his shoulder, things could have ended much uglier.

by Bill on Jun 12, 2006 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know why you guys are surprised he crushed this guy. Any boxing prospect’s pro career starts off with a bunch of walk over opponents. If he continues to box you can expect basically the same level of competition for at least his next 10-15 fights.

by Nick on Jun 12, 2006 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

He stopped hitting his opponent when the referee stepped in, the way any good fighter is trained. It is not his job to determine when the fighter is down, it is his job to punish him so that he won’t get up.

I can’t believe that anyone can possibly criticize what this young kid has done. Even people who are not ND fans have to appreciate that amount of hard work and effort that Zib has put into achieving his dream of being a pro-fighter.

by Domer97 on Jun 12, 2006 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

“The fact that he didn’t have his hands up to defend himself the entire fight would cause him problems against a serious boxer”

Admittedly, I don’t know a whole lot about boxing and I noticed that it looked like his hands were down. But I wondered if that was a strategy of his since he appeared to duck every punch Bell threw at him. You know, bait him into throwing a punch at the face, duck under, and then whack him in the jaw. Another thing I didn’t know but someone here at work pointed out, Dundee, who was in Tommy Z’s corner, was a former trainer of Ali, who was also known for keeping his hands down.

by ND Alum on Jun 12, 2006 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

“His hands looked slow to me”

You know, I can comprehend someone simply hating Notre Dame or hating Poles or hating All-American safeties or even hating people name ‘Tom.’ That’s fine and you can go ahead and just say it.

His hands looked slow?

Even Foreman said after the fight that he wasn’t yet a boxer but he certainly could punch. Dundee wasn’t even supposed to be in the corner for the fight but, after training him for seven weeks, was so impressed with his ability and willingness to learn that he wanted to be there for the fight.

It’s obvious “bacon boy” that you dont know your ass from a hole in the ground. Both of your statements re boxing are completely false, nice try though.

We had a waiter from Notre Dame today. Wouldn’t you know it, he was slow and white.

he made 25 grand because he was a good football player, not because he was a good boxer. yet jeremy bloom can’t take money for skiing because he is a good skier? seems ass backwards to me.

also, of course the dude was a can. it was tom’s first pro fight and they always fight cans. i don’t see how you can be impressed by anything, though, since Robert “heavy bag” Bell obviously had no skills. it’s like the football team playing a division three team and everyone getting impressed with the win.

by kram on Jun 14, 2006 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

He’s fast as hell with some flaws, that’s probably why this was his FIRST PRO FIGHT. He’s 1-0 as a pro, $25K for 49 seconds, and can still beat the ass of any idiot tough guy bitching from a computer. It all boils down to jealousy of Irish fame and continued success. You’re called a “hater”, learn it.
As for strength of schedule, are you kidding me? ND plays consistent top 25 teams. From USC to the Michigans to BC (when they are given good rankings-not sure how) to anyone else. Maybe they should stay in a weak conference and get off on beating up on teams that will never be on the radar.
Notre Dame kills, and now with Weiss at the reigns, good night fags.
