CLASSIC YOUTUBE: BENNETT BLINDSIDES BEUERLEIN

Tiring of 9:00 minute epics backed up with seemingly endless Lord of the Rings soundtracks? Your short but beautiful haiku of a YouTube football sampling may be found below. For Bama fans, it may cause audible moans of pleasure and evoke a time when you didn't associate the words "Cornelius Bennett" with "convicted sex offender;" for Notre Dame fans, it will only strengthen the association, since the blindside hit captured below is the closest thing to football molestation we'll ever see.

Beuerlein was lucky he could speak after that hit. Nice shot just below the facemask and just above the jersey.

The perfect sack—rollout, clean hit just within the rules, high cruelty factor, massive impact, and a fumble recovered.

by Orson Swindle on May 12, 2006 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

That was NOT a fumble.

by NDL89 on May 12, 2006 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

Wasn’t really blindside was it O?
More helmet to facemask than anything.

by Ryno on May 12, 2006 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

We’d say practically blindside—he fakes to one side and begins the rollout when Bennett blacks out the sun. The video’s in slomo, and as Beuerlein turns panic gets about three neurons down his spinal cord before he’s destroyed by Bennett.

It looks clean to us: shoulder-first, helmet to facemask not primary collision, plant and drive to the ground. A beautiful hit, just not if you’re an Irish fan.

Beurlein busted his football hymen on that one.

No Cornelius, not like this!

by NoleinTexas on May 12, 2006 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Worse, I think that’s from the only time the Tide ever beat the Irish.

by DCND on May 12, 2006 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Beurlein wasn’t much good after that hit.

Come to think of it, Beurlein was never good at all.

by PowderMonkey on May 12, 2006 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

Thanx for the memories. But i’m bummed because that was the only time Bama ever beat those red headed bastards.

by mike on May 12, 2006 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Cornelius Bennett was a convicted sex offender?

by Stranko Montana on May 12, 2006 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Yup. “Sexual misconduct” in New York.

by Orson Swindle on May 12, 2006 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Steve was the color guy during the So.Car Bama game this year when they replayed that hit, he made the comment that immediately after the hit he walked into the huddle and started calling plays from his high school days. I also think he pulled a brodie and went to the wrong sideline.

biscuit committed a flippin’ misdemeanor!

when do you go to a bar and, after a few pops, NOT commit a misdemeanor?

by EZ on May 12, 2006 3:46 PM EDT reply actions

Classic. I have this print hanging in my office and evidently, according to the artist’s websit, Beuerlein has a copy as well.

Roll Tide.

You know, they have a life-size version of the painting at the Bryant Museum. It’s a wonderful thing.

by Newspaper Hack on May 12, 2006 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

You know it’s a great hit when the upper body hits the turf (artificial or otherwise) before the lower body.

Best mauling I ever saw in person was Monty (roid rage) Grow launching his body like a scud missile into Darren Studstill’s earhole. On the next play, the poor WVU QB’s helmet was all canted off to the side and he couldn’t figure out why the left guard wasn’t hiking him the ball.

by DHC on May 12, 2006 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

I was at that game. Famously Bennett went up to Beuerlein after the game and said “Hey man, sorry for the concussion.” And no, Beuerlein did not come back into the game after this hit, and yes the ref said the ball was down, not fumbled, despite the evidence you have before you. It was also very early in the game, from what I recall, possibly on NDs first possession. Hope I got all that right. It’s been a while. Oh yeah — and I got in a boatload of trouble for partying after the game and not telling my parents where I was! Roll Tide.

He’s a sex offender. With a record. When he moved to Hollywood he had to go door to door to tell everyone he was a pederast.

Off topic: which video makes you feel dirtier, ND MBA tailgate or OJ’s new joint?

by Phil K. on May 12, 2006 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

If you watch closely, Beuerlein is looking upfield until Biscuit is within 1-2 ft. Watch closely as Beuerlein turns his head a split sec before Biscuit “butters” him.

Can anyone name the teams that Coach Bryant never beat? I think there are 3.

by BamaHamr on May 12, 2006 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

Do Alabama fans count this hit as another national championship?

by Chuck on May 12, 2006 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

The ND tailgate video is hall of fame funny.

The OJ video is simply a piece of creepy crap.

by Stacey Keibler Luvs Me on May 12, 2006 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

I think Bama should get another national title just for that hit. I mean they count them for everything else.

by kbmac on May 12, 2006 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

I believe Bryant was 0 for 5 against ND.

OK, Bennett’s was bad- but scroll down and look at FSU’s Michael Gibson.

This would be my nominatin for the “Fulmer Cup Lifetime Achievement Award.”

What’s a pederast, Walter?

by Donny Kerabatsos on May 12, 2006 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the clip-I was there too. My then-husband and I drove from Philadelphia to Birmingham for the game and back over that weekend. It was worth every second and I will never forget it!

by bamafan on May 12, 2006 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Bryant never beat Notre Dame or Texas…both of which he coached against multiple times. I suppose the other is Colorado, who he coached against once. I had to look the Colorado one up though.

I love the fact that at one point, both of Bennett’s and both of Beuerlein’s feet are off the ground. It should’ve been a fumble…which Bennett recovered.

by Nico on May 13, 2006 1:38 AM EDT reply actions

Rough month for Notre Dame…Can’t decide what pains me more to watch the tailgater or that hit?

On a side note, where was Bennett when that guy was doing the worm? We could have used him to Terry Tate MBA superstar 2006 there!

by NdCali on May 13, 2006 1:53 AM EDT reply actions

Actually, I believe the last one might be Alabama, dating from when he was at Kentucky and Texas A&M. Not sure, though.

by Andrew on May 13, 2006 4:46 AM EDT reply actions

The Bammers don’t claim a Title for that little Bennett incident. They do, however, claim one when a gun went off in a car Bobby Humphrey was in and was shot in the thigh on I-65 S in Birmingham a few years ago.

by dragonash on May 13, 2006 9:41 AM EDT reply actions

Shut the fuck up, Donny – you’re out of your element.

by Walter on May 13, 2006 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Well, Beuerlein has as many SB rings as Bama wonderboy Namath

by WTF on May 13, 2006 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

I recall Beurlein’s comment at the time being that he went back to the huddle or sideline and saw mouths moving, but didn’t hear any voices.

by Heff on May 14, 2006 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

When, praetell, did Beurlein get a SB ring? God knows he wasn’t starting.
