TEDFORD ROBS NORTHWESTERN OF OC; STEWART MANDEL WEEPS
Jeff Tedford, head coach and pro-style offensive whiz, hires away Northwestern’s OC Mike Dunbar to come to Berkeley. Weirdness? He did train up Brent Basanez, so his role will likely be as qb mentor in Tedford’s offense. Northwestern, however, would like to remind you of their excellent academics, and also mention that their band plays “Purple Haze” at games. (HT: reader Colin)

Cal’s academics aren’t too shabby either. And I think Bezerkeley might even pip NW on the counterculture stuff, too.

Why Dunbar left to take an OC job where 1) he doesn’t get to call the plays and 2) he doesn’t get to coach the QBs leads me to wonder just how bad was his relationship with his former HC. Inquiring minds want to know. Tedford is noted as a QB guru who calls his own plays - so what does he need with Dunbar? More to the point, what does Dunbar need with him? Are things in Purpleland that tough that he leaped at the first opportunity to get out that came his way? Who will Walker find to replace him and keep the spread working its magic because we all know the purple cats have no D?
