PROTHRO LIKELY OUT FOR 2006. THIS SUCKS.
When someone whips your ass into a red hot pile of shame, you tend to have a great amount of respect for them. Tyrone Prothro nearly did that by himself in the Florida/Alabama game last year before a questionable call by Mike Shula and a lightning bolt of horrid luck culminated in him breaking his leg into a useless mess. We respect the hell out of him, which makes the fact that he's unlikely to play at all in 2006 nothing less than a total fucking shame.
On the bright side, the Gator D might hold him under a hundred yards in the matchup in the Swamp this fall. But don't underestimate him...

Get this man a redshirt STAT!

Rader and Shula were throwing for the end-zone on fourth down against Florida, when a field goal or punt was all that was necessary.
Then a week later against Ole Miss, late in the 4th quarter Alabama got the ball back on their 25, and Rader called back to back running plays, literally playing for overtime-if not for Croyle calling an audible Alabama would never have gone down the field to kick what ended up being the game-winning field goal.
To throw for the endzone when a game is already decided (regardless of whether Prothro would have been injured or not), and then the next week to play for overtime instead opting for the 2-minute drill is the very definition of gutless. Spurrier used to throw hail-mary’s in games that had long been over, but he also had the guts to play for a win on the last drive. Shula’s one solid decision was hiring Joe Kines, (who was actually leftover from Mike Price’s staff), I’m about as big an Alabama fan as you’ll meet, but I seriously think 10-2 is as good as it will get with Shula regardless of how many top 10 classes he signs.

From where we were on the field, throwing for the end zone made more sense than a FG or punt. Our punt team had already allowed a blocked punt earlier in the year, and JC was always a risk to have a FG blocked. Throwing for the end zone was actually the low-risk play at the time — except a freak injury occurred on the play.

even if I was to concede you that, it still does not redeem the pathetic play calling in the Ole Miss game. All year I kept thinking Rader and Shula were holding some of the playbook back (ie. 1 they basically never threw to the tightends, (2)when dl were bull-rushiong Croyle even a fucking moron could tell you to run a delayed sprint draw, but these two clowns don’t get it
Just look at their past for confirmation, Rader’s record at Tulsa was something like 49-80, given its Tulsa, but that is still fucking pathetic. Shula was a miserable oc in Tampa Bay, then he worked on Wandstatt’s staff in Miami- you could learn more by playing fucking Madden than being an assistant under Dave Wandstatt.

The same article stated Stanley McClover was returning for Auburn next year, so it doesn’t appear that fact-checking is their strong suit. Is there any official word that Prothro will not play ’06?

The official word: “unlikely.” Given the catastrophic injury, we thought that was plausible enough.

Matt, I’d have to go back and look at the Ole Miss series you’re talking about. I’ll say this: I’m not exactly thrilled with the play-calling from Rader/Shula.

Official from whom? USA Today? I think its a bit much to speculate on a player’s health status for September.

Hey Matt, just because you put up a bunch of points in one game doesn’t mean you had any semblance of offense. The reasoning behind not throwing against Ole Miss was simple. (1) The Bama offense is more likely to give up points than the D, and why risk having to punt and give up a big return or a block?
(2) Knowing how awful Christenson is, the Tide had to believe that they needed a TD for a win. Who depends on that kid to make an extra point even?
I understand that you think it was gutless, but it’s the only way that Bama team could have been coached. Shula had to make the defense decide the game. He couldn’t let Scottie Pippen take the last shot, you know what I mean?
As for Kines, I know he deserves some credit for the D this year, but we at UGA don’t miss that bend-but-don’t-break style he brought. Glad he finally figured it out.

Cody, Kines’ success has been just as baffling to me. Maybe Kines hasn’t changed anything, and offenses are finally playing into his hands.

the dude’s bone wasn’t broken. It was damn near vaporized.
if he EVER plays again, it’ll be a miracle. Science has only come so far. That kid is lucky to still have both feet attached.
I don’t think that Shula did the wrong thing playing for the win there. UF was Top 5. Top 5 teams with “Sooper Geniuses” as head coaches can score 4 TDs in 1.5 quarters. You play for the win.

Don’t take this as a flame, Bama fans, but I will very surprised if Tyrone ever steps on a football field again, and that’s a shame. He’s a classy kid that was unfortunate to have Fowler(up) as his doctor.
He needs to think about walking normally before he even considers playing football.
I hope he makes it, but I would be surprised.

Off this topic, but Wisconsin continues to vie for the Fulmer Bowl as Antonio Freeman and Jameson Davis are both suspended for violating Student-Athlete Discipline Policy. Go Badgers!

Actually, it wasn’t “vaporized.” Word from the docs — after the injury — was that it was a clean break and should fully heal.

On that we can agree, Auburn Fan. Fowler is a nightmare — and to think that UAB/Healthsouth are just down the road.

if there is anyone that would work hard enough at returning to form after that terrible of an injury it’s prothro. it might not be this coming season, but he’ll be back on the field for bama.

Infections and complications are perhaps likely when you grind exposed bone and raw meat into turf and fertilizer?

Prothro will never play again, I know a Radiologist at DCH in Tuscaloosa, he wasn’t the one who originally read the x-ray, but he has seen it— and like an above poster he said that Prothro will do extremely well if he ever gets to the point of walking without a limp.

Prothro will never play again. I have no doubt that he will give it his all to get back on the field, but I just don’t see it happening. Remember A C Carter – he worked his ass off too.

So that’s why he was absent when the traditionally-toothless Bama defense went vertical on his ass.
Yes, I wrote “vertical on his ass.” Feel free to work that in to a witty comment.

Strike that. “Offense.” Jesus — even in my comments, the Bama offense is missing,

Comments from 20-24 can only be associated with Bama. It had to be the topic.
