NEWEST D-1 ASPIRANT: FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY
Florida Gulf Coast University, who held its first classes in 1997, has opted to pursue a D-I affiliation as soon as possible. In addition to further crowding the burgeoning Florida football scene with yet another team, FGCU’s team will compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference, also known to most programs as “Who We’re Playing in the 12th Game.” No word on whether Mike Leach was in the audience applauding the announcement. This athletic program is doomed. Men playing soccer ?!?!
Soccer, volleyball and gymnastics are women’s sports, and they need no gender distinction, as women’s is clearly implied.

You know the FGCU is on an ATHF kick when Boost Mobile becomes the official wireless provider of Eagle athletics.

Dr. Weird looks like the ideal nemesis for Ace and Gary (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

i didn’t see anything on the university’s website about a football program or plans to start one, but either way who wants to bet mike leach and tommy tuberville would engage in a mexican knife fight for the right to be the first D-1 football program to schedule a women’s soccer team as the home opener?
