TEXAS TO ESPN: F*CK YOU!

Do you think the Longhorns watched all month as ESPN performed constant fellatio on the USC Trojans 2005 team? Did the feel just a bit disrespected that the worldwide leader spent far less time talking about the Rose Bowl matchup than they did mythically pitting USC's second best team in the last 2 years against historically great teams, only to find that noone could stop these Trojans? Perhaps Vince Young felt a little miffed when ESPN decided it would be the number campaigner for Reggie Bush's Heisman run. Well, Texas got the last word and it was a resounding one. Although Reggie Bush might make for a better pro prospect, Vince Young proved he was the best college player in the country last night. It was clear and unequivocal. Texas had to stop a myriad of USC future first rounders yet they were able to contain Bush save for one big play. USC had only to watch for one playmaker but Young was simply too good. Take that Bristol University!

Who's the man? That's right Vince, you're the man. Now go get yourself paid for this stuff.

Still waiting for fowler, may, herbstreit to wipe usc’s taint off their chins and issue a retraction.

Still waiting.

Fowler and Corso, both picked Texas to win the game. I have no problem with them.

by Dom on Jan 5, 2006 9:20 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I am elated that Texas won. Leinart is cocky dickhead. What about that post game comment, “I still think that we are the better team, Texas just made some plays in the end”. If that’s true why could USC not convert on 4 and 2? It’s hilarious, USC thought they had the game won. Good for Texas and all the other teams out there that always get put down by the press.

Even if the University of Southern California did not exist, “Fuck you Mark May” would be a valid sentiment in pretty much any scenario.

Congratulations, ’Horns.

Actually, last night Herbstreit did go so far as to admit that he had been giving USC a very considerate reach-around for a while now and that Texas probably used it as motivation. He didn’t, however, make the correct statement that Texas must logically be the greatest team of all time after beating the supposed greatest, USC. I’m waiting for that.

Tony Kornheiser spent a good chunk of the first segment of his radio show this morning mocking ESPN for “slurping USC” for the past few weeks.

You can catch the replay of it on WTEM in Washington starting at 11:00 AM Eastern.

Corso picking Texas at the end of the pre-game worried me, mostly because Corso is slipping from just regular crazy to he-might-put-on-a-mascot-head-and-never-take-it-off crazy.

I’m still confused why no one talked about USC burning their last TO on an essentially meaningless 2 point conversion. That time out cost them a chance to tie (on the 2nd to last play Reggie Bush could have cut it up field for another 10-20 yards if they had a time out).

HA HA! I forgot about that!

Fouts dropped “Quiddich” and “Snitch” reference on Keith Jackson and he all he did was keep quiet. I have expected him to unleash a big “Whoa Nellie!” just to break up an awkward moment.

Also,I will make Holly Rowe my own…

by Ryno on Jan 5, 2006 10:12 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Given all the whining about the blown call by the officials in our game (Outback), why is no one upset about Young’s lateral with knee firmly planted on the sacred Rose Bowl turf? Seems strangely quiet to me…

by Chris on Jan 5, 2006 10:13 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I dunno, CrimsonTide, Leinhart could be right. If you took away the first quarter, USC won that game. ;)

Kornheiser went back to radio? When did that happen?

by weagle251 on Jan 5, 2006 10:13 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bush might be a better pro prospect than Young, but he’s not going to be as good at the next level as many think. He finally played a good, fast defense (not a great one)and looked like an all-pac 10 second team kind of back. If USC had to go against ACC-SEC type defenses like Alabama, Va Tech, LSU, FSU, etc. a few times a year-maybe ESPN and all these other media whores would have realized that Lendale White, and the two WRs Smith and Jarret are what make USC a great offense (leinart has an average arm at best, and will have to be in a play-action type of offense a-la the Jets and Chad Pennington a few years back in order to be an effective quarterback)

by matt on Jan 5, 2006 10:15 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ryno – I am prepared to offer you the choice of a dual at ten paces or a Texas cowrope match for the right to do upside down tequila shots and beer bongs with the glorious Holly Rowe.

by YMB on Jan 5, 2006 10:17 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well, the way ESPN propped up this USC team as the greatest team in the history of the universe and all, you would have thought that Texas winning would tear a hole in the space/time continuum or something. I half way expected Doc Brown to show up at the post game press conference and tell Matt Leinart that he was now his own grandpa. Texas winning should provide some shut up juice to the people who propped USC 2005 team up as the greatest of all time.

by W. Adams on Jan 5, 2006 10:20 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

When will ABC wake up? Keith Jackson should never do another game, especially the title game. And Fouts? Where’s some talent? Somebody with college on-air knowledge, please. While I’m a fan of Gatorade as is everyone else, this white-hair (KJ) can’t keep Trojan cock out of his mouth long enough to give us a Whoa Nellie. Disgusting. I think Dennis Miller would have had more insight.

OH, and who cares about the players parents? USC’s of course. It felt like a bad reality show. Thank God it was a great game.

by BGTR on Jan 5, 2006 10:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Did anyone catch the slip ups in Holly Rowe’s postgame interview with Leinhart? Matt (referring to his own team) stumbled and said it was a great “win” – then corrected himself (must’ve been just repeating what he’s said after every game), then…
HOLLY ROWE SAID TO MATT LEINHART “Thanks for a great game and a great career, Vince”. What? Did she actually call Matt Leinhart “vince”?? That’s so awesome I had to watch it over and over again.
Oh, and fuck ESPN and their USC-is-the-greatest-ever deal.

by Chris on Jan 5, 2006 10:28 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Still waiting on the Heisman recount. Not only did the writers job Young by voting him a distant second, but then they acted like Vince was delusional for even considering he had a chance. FU to the Heisman voters, FU to ESPN and the media, and big ups to Texas and Vince Young.

Was it me or did Holly Rowe ask Leinart at the end of the game, “How does it feel to lose?”

Then Pete Carrell welling up with tears in his eyes- priceless. Everyone in the nation knew the ball was going to White on that 4th and 2.

by Lion4Life on Jan 5, 2006 10:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

When Leinart gets to the NFL, I hope he faces a pro team with one or two Texas alums on defense who drop his ass like a sack of potatoes for that “We’re still the better team” comment. Nothing makes me madder than to see a team lose and still insist that they’re somehow better. Even when Georgia fans do it.

Also, did you notice that the ESPN/ABC knob-shining of USC continued postgame as they lauded Pete Carroll for waiting around to congratulate Mack Brown after the game ended. Yes, the meeting of coaches at midfield, a rarely-seen tradition that is only executed at . . . nearly every fucking college football game ever played. Why was Pete getting the Mother Teresa treatment for this?

by Doug on Jan 5, 2006 11:00 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kornheiser went back to radio? When did that happen?

About ten minutes after his non-compete with ESPN Radio expired. He’s been back on locally in DC for about 14 months now, and the show has been simulcast on XM since last spring.

Many of the regular guests — Junior, Bob Ryan, Sam Smith, Mel Kiper, etc. — are still on, and TK can rip the “heads” at ESPN all he likes without getting calls from Bristol mid-show. Since it’s back to being local, though, you’ll get more Post beat writers and quirky local stuff (like James Carville picking NFL games against the spread every week) than you may have been used to on the national show.

Bush is a freak on the college level. Unfortunately for the Texans he’s going to be Dante Hall at the pro level: blazing fast but too small to play every snap, they’re going to waste a pick and a ton of money on him. Lendale White will have a better pro career.

BEST off finaly put an end to that 3 Pete BJ nonsense.

Once and for all IT’S A ONE PETE, and had USC won last night it would only be a 2 Pete.

Congratulations to UT on winning the Crystal Ball for 05. Thank You UT & Vince Young. (Now Young go Pro, so Mack Brown can please slip back to mediocrity)

Not only did Holly Rowe as Matt Leinart “What is it like to lose,” but at the end of her two-shot Q and A, she said “Thanks, Vince.” Get out your Tivos, ’cuz it happened. Part of me really wants to think that was a delberate cut.

God Bless her, and I will horse-whip any man who tries to get between me and my holly.

by SystemsDude on Jan 5, 2006 1:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kevin, you are so right. VY would be the first draft choice and the Texans would have a chance to get him to run their show, not Carr. Secondly, either Bush or Leinart would be available for the 3rd pick, which would reunite one of them with Norm Chow. Could make for an interesting NFL draft scenario in April.

by dick on Jan 5, 2006 1:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The vindication that myself and other LSU fans feel right now is just indescribable. Pete Carroll’s arrogance clearly cost USC the game. Going for it on 4th and 1 or 4th and inches is one thing, but on 4th and 2 knowing that failure means the short field for VY? This isn’t some mickey mouse pac-10 rush defense they can run roughshod over.

Also, about the infamous “knee down” TD, I’m not so sure VY didn’t get the pass off. After watching the replay several times, right before his knee hits the ground his arm goes up in a passing motion. The camera angle I saw was on a straight-line path from the ball to his hand. From that angle it’s impossible to tell whetheer the ball is still in VY’s hand or if the ball just left it. Even if the call was botched, they clearly didn’t call a 3rd Q Leinart interception and 4th Q LenDale White fumble. So USC fans, stop bitching.

ummm…as to the ‘real defense’ comments…SC did still hang 38 on them, right? unless i wasn’t watching the same game. last time i checked ‘real’ defenses put the kibosh on teams before they score…oh…thirty motherf*cking eight points. i really don’t think the D is deserving of the kudos here.

by MiamiFan88 on Jan 5, 2006 3:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

mallar, you must have missed the regular season, so here are the points USC put up on opponents.

Hawaii: 63
Arkansas: 70
Oregon: 45
Ariz. St.: 38
Arizona: 42
Notre Dame: 34
U. Wash. 55
Wash. St. 51
Cal 35
Fresno St. 50
UCLA 66

When an offense scores like this, you’re telling me 38 points is a thrashing? Hardly.

by LSUdolemite on Jan 5, 2006 4:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Look at that schedule. SEC teams wish they could have a schedule as simple as that one.

by CrimsonTide12xsChamps on Jan 5, 2006 4:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

no, not saying a thrashing at all. however, citing any level of victory for the Texas defense when they still let in (very roughly)the same amount of points as SC’s better competition is a total crock of sh*t. had Texas stopped them in the low 20’s then we could start to talk.

bush didn’t explode that much because they kept calling plays for him to go outside, never up the middle. Texas adjusted as any defense would and should. however, their D-line was still manhandled by some very large Polynesians. and their d-backs didn’t exactly inspire fear and awe against bird and jarrett.

that’s my line and i’m sticking to it.

by mallardofallmallards on Jan 5, 2006 5:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That’s also the first time a defense has gone up against 2 Heisman winners in the back. I thought the D was fine.

I bet Stanko does too.

To anyone who recorded the game last night:

I set my DVD recorder to start at 7pm in 4-hour mode, and missed the glorious victory (game went until 11:35, post-game well after). Stupid, stupid, stupid.

If anyone can burn me a DVD of everything after 11pm Central time (preferably including post-game and Vince’s awful rendition of “We are the Champions”), I’d be happy to pay you for your trouble.

Besides, you’d be making a fellow football fanatic very happy. I’d be eternally grateful. Please contact me at randycorona@msn.com.

bitterhorn,

in post 35 you compare bush to dante hall saying he is too small to make a significant impact on the offense. I think bush has more value than that. I believe Marshall Faulk was about the same size coming out. Not to mention on his secound (or third) carry bush delivers a pop to a would be tackler.

by tzubear on Jan 5, 2006 8:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Matt,

Based on your post (21) vince young should not get credit for his great performance last night because it was against the 40th ranked defense.

by tzubear on Jan 5, 2006 8:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

tzubear-
I hope I’m wrong, maybe he’ll beef up and be able to take the pounding with the Toxins. Especially if they can draft some of those 600lb tongan lineman from USC. I think he can be significant, but not necessarily on every down.

by bitterhorn on Jan 5, 2006 10:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good point about SC’s offensive line. Texas’ D line was dominant this year, but not in the rose bowl (except for one 4th and 2 late in the forth qtr). Did anyone else notice Deuce Latui’s face inside that helmet. Looked like the fat that spills over when a big girl wears pumps. He neads all 365lbs just to get that helmet off. Off course Im not saying this if he is standing next to me.

Post 48: Here is the “total offense” rankings of the teams that played your “defensive juggernaut” team-Alabama: Out of 117 D-1 teams(high ranking is bad)- 113,111,105,100,90,70,66,60, 61, 37,and 6. As you can see, there were two teams on that schedule that were in the top 50% of offensive production of the 117 teams in D-1. Be careful with numbers. Looks like Alabama’s schedule is pretty bad. And, I did not include Utah fucking State!!

by dragonash on Jan 6, 2006 7:02 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

dragonash — CrimsonTide12xsChamps may be a little over-excited, but the Alabama defense was legit. That number 60 offense on your list hung 40 points on the supposedly great defense of Miami but was held to only 16 (including overtime) by Bama. And number 6 on your list (even better pre-bowl) was held to a whopping 10 points in its bowl game — they had been averaging more than 40.

by oriole1 on Jan 6, 2006 12:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

dragonash-you are talking down a defense that held TT to 10 points (with their 1 td coming with 2 min left)… I feel embarassed for you. How many points did Texas give up to TT.

The really ridiculous aspect of ESPN’s love affair with 2005 USC was that the 2005 team wasn’t nearly as good as the 2004 team.

The 2005 team had a mediocre defense. I fail to see how a defense could lose Mike Patterson, Shaun Cody, Lofa Tatupu and Matt Grootegoed and be better. USC wasn’t. Last year’s USC team wouldn’t have had such trouble with Notre Dame, Arizona State or Fresno State because they could play D. This year’s team couldn’t.
