BRADY QUINN WINS SAMMY BAUGH AWARD
There's one quarterback award that won't go to Matt Leinart this year....again.... as the Sammy Baugh award for college football's top passer as determined by The Touchdown Club of Columbus went to Irish Uber-passer Brady Quinn. Last year Leinart was passed over for Louisville quarterback and sign languange afficianodo Stefon Lefors.

I wonder what Leinarts numbers would have been had he faced the teams on Notre Dames schedule. I’m guessing about 3000 yards passing, per game that is…

Good point. If Leinart didn’t have to play those famously stout PAC-10 defenses, his numbers would have been amazing.

Perhaps if Leinart had been so lucky as to have BEEN FROM COLUMBUS he might have had a chance as well.

I wonder what Quinn’s numbers would have been had he had Reggie Bush to hand off to…I’m guessing about 4500.

Insightful commentary, Gene.
Pass defense rankings of USC’s opponents:
Hawaii: 90th
Arkansas: 48th
Oregon: 71st
ASU: 109th
Arizona: 74th
ND: 97th
Washington: 107th
WSU: 113th
Stanford: 111th
Cal: 76th
Fresno St.: 32nd
UCLA: 64th
I’m impressed!

Way to sack up after actually faced with facts. I wish more college fans were like that… hell, I wish I could sometimes be like that.

It’s cool, Gene – ND’s opponents haven’t been that much better, but they did go against three pretty good pass defenses in Michigan, Tennessee and Syracuse (yeah, Syracuse, go figure).
On the other hand, Purdue’s defense was high comedy.

There is much more to quarterbacking beyond the stats issue, as in being a field general, directing an offense that can get around a changing defensive scheme, and that is yet another reason why Leinart should be the quarterback choice. His stats also are a reflection of the fact that in some games he was on the bench in the 3rd quarter as the game was already decided. And lastly, if you had Reggie and LenDale to hand off to, wouldn’t you do so occasionally, and thus the stats can be misleading. To lead a team to 34 wins in a row requires someone to lead, and Matt did just that. Columbus is way too many times zones from the reality of what the west coast brand of football is all about. In 2008 and 2009, USC and Ohio State play each other. Then they may learn.

Ugh, you’re so goi.
Sorry, but it couldn’t be avoided. I mean look at your name.
At any rate, I couldn’t agree more with you. This should’ve been Leinart’s. They might as well just rename this award to the Sammy “The Statwhore” Baugh Award for pass whoring.

Give it to the guy who most personifies Sammy Baugh. Best fucking interview ever on NFL films, him sitting there on his farm wearing a TCU hat and cussing up a storm. Plus he got to bitch slap his dog. Can Brady cuss that well? Nah, he looks too polite. That Palko kid from Pitt on the other hand? He can cuss like a sailor.

The best thing Matt Leinart did all year was fumble a football. I pity the NFL team that blows a top five pick on that guy…Vince Young has a better argument for that award than Leinart.

I’m thinking getting an award from the “Touchdown Club of Columbus Ohio” ranks up there in the prestige category with Auburn winning the “Rose Club of Opp”’s national championship award in 2004.

I’m sure Syracuse didn’t yield too many YPG passing because most teams elect not to throw much once they’re up 28-0 in the second quarter.

For the people who are giving Leinart props for running the offense, I say you are fools. Having Bush and White in the backfield is a boon for his passing game because defenses have to concentrate on stopping them (Bush, in particular) first and foremost. On the other hand, when teams face Notre Dame, stopping Quinn is stopping the offense. The best football player in the country is not lining up in Notre Dame’s backfield. Their QB is their threat, and defenses can key in on him alone. On top of that, Quinn had objectively better numbers. Meanwhile, Leinart is taking one f-ing class. Brady’s doing it well and he’s doing it the right way.

Who cares? The reason there are 500 different “Best QB” awards is so that they can give them all to different players based on different criteria. Last year Leinart got the Heisman, but White got the Davie O’Brien and LeFors got this one. This year, Young got the O’Brien, Quinn gets this one, and I’m sure there’s some QB award that Leinart will get (or about 5), so there shouldn’t be any whining by anyone. Leinart gets rewarded every night when he returns home and Lachey takes him to O-town. Seriously—how long before it’s public that the whole divorce was because they did a threesome one night, and Nicky liked Matt’s composure under center better than Jessica’s? Are they going to fight for custody of Matt in court? THESE are the serious issues here, gentlemen—not who got what silly award!

what’s the deal with the tears over leinart not winning the award? he has a heisman and a national championship. boo-who. i will say…if the award involved some kind of dancing skill requirement he’d be a shoe-in.
by bones on Dec 9, 2005 6:26 PM EST reply actions
Matt Leinart sucks. He played in 12 regular season games while Brady Quinn played in 11 and Brady still had 5 more td’s and 200 more yards.
Matt Leinart what go anywhere in the NFL while people are saying that Brady Quinn will be great.
Brady Quinn has better numbers than Matt Leinart and that’s the bottom line.
Last point:What the hell is up with Vince Young winning the Davey O’ Brien award. It’s suppose to be about the best quarterback with the best passing numbers, and all people know him for is becasue of his feet.

WHo ever thinks matt leinart is better than Brady Quinn is a dumb ass. Lienart plays for the best team in the nation…hell im 14 and could have a 1,000 yard year w/ that team. Matt Leinart is a joke and he could quite possibly be the slowest most immobile qb in college football and you little USC pussys can jump on the band wagon but facts dont lie….look up the stats my friend, the fact that leinart got invited over brady to the hesiman presentation is a joke as well. Wait till the pros when leinart shows his true colers. Hes the next Chris Weinke
by Cody on Dec 25, 2005 4:29 PM EST reply actions
you are right.
Leinart is the next Weinke.
I think there is a big reason why he didn’t turn
pro last year… instead he took ballroom dancing
and stuck around for his last year of eligablity.
he said it was because the NFL was too much like
work… huh… sounds like a guy who really has
high aspirations to me! as for Young… he will
be a bust too. Much like Mike Vick. A bust.
an athlete playing the wrong positon. Brady Quinn
would have been a bust too… if it weren’t for Charlie
Weis. which leads us to the next injustice….
Weis not winnning Coach of the Year. Somehow the Sports
Writers forgot that for the past 5 years they have been calling for JoePa’s head… and this year (because he hired a good offensive coordinator) he had a good year. If anyone from PSU should have gotten that award, it should have been the O-coordinator… not JoePa. I think that Leinart will be a bust in the “League”… Young won’t last two seasons, but Brady Quinn will take his Charlie Weis education (along with the education he will pick up at ND) and be a #1 pick… and win at least 1 superbowl.
What I can’t wait to see is, what happens with Tim Teebow and Chris Leak next year. If you will remember, Leak was the #1 QB coming out of High School the same year that Brady Quinn was the #2 QB. I wonder how long it lasts next year that Leak’s job is secure… and how many losses it will take for Urban Meyer’s team (who I believe is a very over-rated and unproved coach (who is Utah State anyways??))
and the media to start crying for Teebow?
I love college football!
Lastly… and I wouldn’t repeat this in public…
I think there is a very good chance that ND puts a butt-kickin’ on OSU. Charlie Weis… that’s all I’m gonna say…
Charlie Weis. final score ND:41- OSU:17
