DR. STRANGELOB: MIKE LEACH IN THE NYT

The best profile of a coach we've ever read. This quote alone:

(On violence in football:)"Aw, yeah, the violence is awesome. That's the best part."

Thanks for the link! I didn’t read the Sunday paper last weekend and missed this one. BTW, I think Leach may have just offered up one of the best Aggie quotes ever:

As his team raced onto the field, he gazed into the stands filled with screaming fans and wondered about the several thousand “cadets” from Texas A.&M. clustered in one end zone. They wear military uniforms and buzz cuts, holler in unison and stand at attention the entire game. “How come they get to pretend they are soldiers?” he asked. “The thing is, they aren’t actually in the military. I ought to have Mike’s Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandanna. When you’re a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we’ll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that.”

Outstanding article. I love when he says stuff like

“Our notion of balance,” Leach says, “is that the five guys who catch the ball all gain 1,000 yards in the season.”

“I’ve thought about going a whole season without calling a single running play,”

Sounds like me playing Playstation.

I like Leach a lot and really respect that he never really played football and is still having this success. That said he suffers agaisnt fast teams. Texas kicks his ass every year. They beat OU on a bad call this year and OU stinks this year.

I like his passing game and its hard to argue with the numbers, but the fact remains that to win consistently on a bigtime level you HAVE TO run the ball effectively.

Write an entry about the Outback Bowl, including who y’all think is gonna win.

Ian: I immediately thought of you when reading that article. That’s probably more creepy than nice, but there it is.

Is Leach trying to combat global warming by training a new generation of Pirates?? Maybe the FSM is a Tech Fan.

I wonder if Leach hisses and melts into a puddle when he’s shown the wishbone formation? Like vampires to a cross.

Alabama’s defense is very fast. Should make for an interesting bowl game in Dallas.

Kevin -

You can’t rush genius.

And you forgot the magic word.

Maybe coaching football like one of us plays Madden is really the way to go. I want to see what happens when a)he overshadows bobby knight (if he doesnt already) and b) how good his offense is with first-class prospects.
And a question to the football historians, when was the last time an offense really changed the game (not to assume Leach’s will)?
