DETROIT LIONS FIRE THE MOOCH!
According to FoxSports, the Detroit Lions have fired head coach Steve Mariucci. I know that is NFL news, but we here at EDSBS.com wonder what that means for the college coaching ranks as more teams try to recreate the Pete Carroll experience (lack-luster NFL coach into college genius). Let the rumor mill begin. We'll add to it by pointing out the obvious: He's good friends with Tom Izzo you know, and John L. Smith hasn't exactly worked out like the Spartans hoped.

The rumor on the UK kitten call in shows is that Mooch is on his way to Lexington. Of course theses are the same people who felt they had a ligitamate shot at getting Bill Parcells and Darth Visor

Don’t forget Norm Chow, Bear Bryant, Vince Lombardi, Dick Cheney, and the Dalai Lama. All of them have been rumored, at one point or another, to have purchased homes near Lexington and accepted the head coaching position with the Cats.

Actually, I don’t think the Spurrier to Lexington idea was ever that far fetched…. I mean, he did end up in Carolina for all the same reasons he could have gone to Lexington.

Seems I would be watching the Northwest passenger manifests if my last name were Fulmer…

The fat man would love Ricky P’s old italian resturant he left a few years ago. As a Louisville fan, It has been fun to see “little brother” grow up and kick their blue arse. As a side note, look at their history. You have years of failure. Followed by a couple of years of success. Followed by probation. Followed by more years of failure. It holds so true, it’s like the seasons.

I know Mariucci’s pretty universally well-regarded, but I’m still a little bit vague on what exactly he’s done to still be a hot commodity.
6-6 at Cal, a couple winning seasons with Steve Young as his QB, into the tank immediately when Jeff Garcia takes over. He did a nice job in ‘01-’02, but heck…even Wade Phillips has put together back-to-back winning seasons in the NFL.
I dunno, I guess if he keeps getting work, he must be good. He might be – I just don’t see anything in his resume that distinguishes him from, say, Dick Jauron.

This just in: Notre Dame has officially declined interest in hiring Mariucci.

I don’t think SF went into the tank when Garcia took over. As hard as it is to believe, Garcia played in three Pro Bowls under Maruicci’s watch. There’s a strong possibility that he was absorbed into the black hole of suck that is the Lions franchise.

Wow…Jauron named the interim head coach. I totally picked his name out of thin air. I didn’t even know he was with the Lions.
Weird.
