PEDERSEN PLEASES CALLAHAN BY GETTING BEHIND HIM.

Following a loss to swole-up Mark Mangino and Kansas--the first loss to KU in 36 games between the two-- Callahan has his AD firmly behind him, ready to pump him up with the rock-hard confidence only an AD can muster for his embattled coach. Petersen may be pitching, but is the Husker nation willing to catch another year of Callahandamonium?

He has no choice, he’s the one who ran Solich out of town and Callahan is his boy. It’s basically a package deal, if Callahan gets run I wouldn’t expect Petersen to be far behind.

Nathan, I know a lot of people are saying that, but I just don’t see the reasoning. You mean to tell me that as badly as it has gone, Pedersen can’t step up to the mike and say I hired the wrong guy, I accept responsibility and we need to move on? I just don’t think institutions work in lock-step like so many suggest.

I think the greater problem is finding someone to fill the job that would be both a good X and O guy and would also be a PR boon.

I think two seasons is generally considered too short a leash for coaches these days — right off the top of my head I can’t think of a single DI-A head coach who got the ax after only two seasons. But I can think of several who got it after only three, Willingham and The Former Florida Coach Who Must Not Be Named being two of the most recent and high-profile examples. Callahan will get more than two years in Lincoln, but he certainly hasn’t done anything at this point that would make anyone think he’ll get more than three.

Given decent talent, an established program, time to work “his magic”, and Callahan has the ability to turn any team into a .500 powerhouse. He went to the superbowl on a the coattails of Gruden, only get beat down by Gruden when he got there. Now he’s stinkin up the Big 12 North. Why in the would the Huskers would hire a guy who had just been ousted from the Raiders whose veteran players (T. Brown, C. Woodson) honestly thought he was trying to sabotage the season? If it’s brown, flush it down.
