WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN?
Bill has a fascinating piece on Boston College's trend of recruiting the first and second generation African immigrants here.

What is the point of this question? And enough of this neuroticness of hyphenating every dang ethnicity. We are all AMERICANS…not hypened Americans. It’s not african-american it’s Black. If you must clarify an individual for identity purposes (as in pointing one out in a large crowd – the black guy with the green shirt, etc). Hypenating and perpetuating this separating of citizens has grown old, tiring and it’s insulting anymore. Let’s take it to the extreme…a player has a mother of mexican & irish heritage, and a father of black & german heritage…do we refer to him as an Irish-Mexican-African-German-American?? Besides, “african-americans” are not from Africa, they’re from Michigan, Florida etc in AMERICA. How do you peg a black guy from Haiti? (dont say it). Black is black..American is American..get over it already.
