HEATH SHULER FOR CONGRESS
Former Vol great and NFL bust Heath Shuler has announced his intention to run for a Congressional seat in the western region of North Carolina. Democrat? Republican? Who cares… he’s a football player. Besides, you can’t tell from the website, but we do know he’s running on a platform of “taking Western North Carolina values to the House of Representatives”.

He’s running as a Dem (last time I saw). I was passing through WNC after visiting my mom outside Knoxville and saw a clip in a small-town paper that said something about U.S. House candidate Heath Shuler. That was back in April. I thought it was a joke. You know, “Oh, not THAT Heath Shuler. There’s no way!” Guess he really did like DC.

Heath’s a democrat. I never thought he was too bright (although his wife was a looker – their season tickets were right in front of mine for a while). Business must not be too good as I think most democrats don’t earn real income that gets taxed by the feds. But then western North Carolina is probably still loaded with yellow-dog Dems. At the end of the day, I don’t see him hanging with Kennedy, Kerry, Clinton (Hillary, not Bill) and the like. Maybe he’ll be a Zell Miller Democrat!!

I don’t think he has a chance of getting elected — the only Democrats in WNC are in Asheville. Then again, he is young and good-looking and that worked for John Edwards, though I think Edwards was a little smarter.
From what I’ve seen, Shuler is your typical old-school Southern Dem, minus the racism. In other words, look for him to be big on education, health care and jobs, but I imagine he’ll also be friendly to social conservatives and small business.
