BOWL NEWS UPDATE
The bad news continues for playoff proponents as the bowls continue unabated to succeed. On that score, this week, the Fort Worth Bowl extended its agreement with Conference USA for four years through the 2009 season. That game will match up teams from Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference.
For those with more tropical vacations planned, the Hawaii Bowl signed a four-year extension with Conference USA and the Western Athletic Conference. Under the deal, however, next years game can include a bowl-eligible 6th place team from the mightly Pac 10.

When in Hawaii, do you really want to spend time watching the 6th place Pac 10 team take on a member of the WAC???

What exactly defines “success” of a bowl? Just someone starting an exhibition game up, willing to lose money for a year or two before it tanks?
Honestly, outside of the BCS Bowls, a fan boycott would do this sport some good.

In other news: the Liberty Bowl upgraded from the MWC champion to the 8th or 9th placed team in the SEC or some such, starting in 2006. C-USA #1 still goes (I think, the press release made no real sense that I could see).
Part of the deal is “no rematches” and “no intrastate matchups,” so sorry all you folks looking forward to a Ole Miss-USM contest or Tulane-LSU. (I’d include Mississippi State-USM… but who are we kidding here?)
