NOODLING: THE SPORT OF IDIOTS AND KINGS

We were shocked to open our weekly home edition of the Economist and discover an article on noodling, the Oklahoma/Arkansas method of fishing for monstrous catfish with nothing but your hand and a bloodstream full of Nat Light. Unfortunately we can’t link to the premium article, but we can give you this link to an ESPN article on Keith Sutton’s first experience with what is arguably the world’s most equitable way of killing an animal: with your fucking bare hands.

A typical noodler: brave, satisfied, and intoxicated.

HEISMANPUNDIT ON THE 12TH GAME

Heismanpundit analyzes the impact of the 12th game on the Heisman race.

We think the 12th game will allow for more drama in a race without a clear front-runner, with teams with crucial late-season matchups benefitting and those with weak in-state rivalries–often scheduled toward the end of the season–losing out. The race, complex as it is, just got even more complex.

ALABAMA IN DISCUSSIONS WITH SHULA OVER EXTENSION

Despite going 4-9 and 6-6 in the last two seasons (which is rightfully blamed on the way Alabama football was left to him), Mike Shula might have a contract extension on the horizon. Currently, Shula is under contract for $900,000 per year until 2009, but the contract calls for a review this season to head off speculation of a lame duck coach during the recruiting wars. It would surprise us if Shula does not get a nice extension as Alabama believes it needs some stability in the program as it emerges from sanctions and tries to get competitive again in the SEC West. Plus, Shula’s brand of bland football (were you can get by with defense and only 2 offensive plays that work) is better suited to college than the pros anyway.
